Has Taken One Year to Produce as Many as Did in 150 Years

The study by Journal looked at how many AI images have been generated by DALL-E, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and Adobe Firefly and compared it to how many photographs were taken since photography was invented circa 1826.

@shepgo , but the number is unimportant. More important is the content of those images, which could be argued to be zero. IE: entirely derivative.

I would be curious how much work people put into their prompts and how close the generated images get, vs how much work photographers did, with the assumption that they published exactly what they wanted, and we're not counting what they threw out.

. Using Google Street View to check out some parts of central Manchester, it seems that in places they have taken their pictures using a camera on a stick in a backpack. In this image the streetview-er has had their reflection caught in a a particularly shiny van.

I know they did this sort of thing for very remote paths and trails but I'm surprised they used it for a major city centre.

My beloved old paperback copy of Snow Crash I got in college has an ad for Spectre VR (“A Cyberspace Battle Game”) on the back.

The back cover of the same book, with an all-text ad for Spectre VR, a Cyberspace Battle Game
