OK, are now at 99% completion. The only thing missing for 100% are three strings pertaining “gated prisms”. Gating here is to be intended in the circuit logic sense (a gated prism is one that doesn't let light through). I'd rather use the proper Italian term here but I have no idea what it is. If anybody know, please do let me know

Update on the situation. I've decided to take the plunge and get “creative” for Italian, fishing from ancient Greek for the names I was having troubles with. One of the problem is that some of the names actually exist in Italian, although with slightly different meanings.

Here's the situation as of now, with comments. The translations are still open for debate, so if anyone has comments or suggestions, I'm open.

One of the things I love about is that, despite being conceptually in the / genre, it has a very original and quirky take on it. This also reflects on a number of details down to the level of semantics —and that's where my love turns into hate when I want to translate it.

Here's some examples:

  1. has trees and the trees produce fruit. The fruit is acorn-shaped, but huge and more egg-shaped, so obviously it's called an EGGCORN
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eggcorn

How the heck am I supposed to translate that in a romance language, where acorn is derived from the Latin glans and egg from the Latin ovum?

I'm not good at in the first place, but I'm not sure this is even possible in the first place

@oblomov@sociale.network avatar
  1. has lava, but obviously it's not called lava.

Since cooling flowing lava produces pumice
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumice
the hot yellow flowing stuff is called …

(wait for it)

pumwater

And I mean, honestly, I think it's a brilliant , but HOW THE FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF HECK AM I SUPPOSED TO TRANSLATE THAT!

  1. another one I have issues with is the metal, which again obviously has, but obviously it's not called metal or with any other name of common metals. It's called LODE.

Problem: lode is technically the vein of metalliferous ore. So if I want to go with a more literal translation I would have to go with the equivalent of
(geological) vein, but that really doesn't come out right. I've seen that whoever translated it into French just went with métal, and … honestly, I get why.

Thanks to all that helped with the brainstorming. After some more thinking and some consultations with my kids (the only other Italian players I know), we've agreed that the best translation for eggcorn is ghiandovolo, even though there's some disagreement on the gender of the word (ghiandovola being the alternative). Sadly Italian is very inconsistent with fruit gender, so the decision is largely arbitrary. I'll probably go with the -o ending for consistency with ovolo.

Scratch pumwater, I think I finally have the right idea for how to translate the «lode» in Italian: I'm going to based it on the Greek σίδηροϛ, as found in many ironworking-related words such as siderurgia (siderurgy).

Been playing #MineClone2 on #MineTest as I'm on a #RPi. So far I suck, I think the beginning game is harder on MineTest then #Minecraft. But It's sill fun.

Is there a Minetest package similar to Minecraft but doesn't try to clone it?

vintprox,

@doctorwhom Similar but not a clone? That's a hard ask.

Do you think it can be helped by first announcing the elements that interest you? Meanwhile, proceed with the thought that these games introduce their own sense of community: contributors, players, viewers. They don't necessarily need all that has to offer. So, here you have it: disassemble every game, find the low-level concepts that you enjoy and find them a way into the that you're playing now.

reveals itself better with this in mind and most things in are pluggable mods anyway. If you're digging style, I suggest looking for inspiration with Minetest games like and mods like , , . If it's something else, play around with mods on ContentDB by opening "Content" tab in Minetest launcher. Wanna have fun and sense of wonder straight away, while being able to invite your friends or meet new people? Look up servers similar to .

What's a good start into ? I tried Mineclone 2, but there are so many mobs at night that all I can do is camp in a house until night is over (boring).
Currently trying Mesecraft which looks promising.

Hit me with your favourite game/mod combos and why!

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@blindcoder if you don't care about mobs and are interested in building machines/automation, you may want to look into . It's a game with a very different “form” compared to Minecraft-inspired ones, while still preserving the fundamental “dig and build” principle.

I've made the mistake of installing on my , I think I can drop any pretense of actually ever using it for serious work.

I've held back on so far, with the excuse that controller support isn't good enough yet, but the actual reason is to try and get enough hours of sleep at night instead of playing with @rubenwardy mapping. I don't know if I should hope official controller support never arrives or not.
