The #Union representing employees of #Bell claimed the telecom giant laid off 100s of its members Wed via virtual grp meetings, move which it described as “beyond shameful”
In press release, #Unifor said more than 400 wrkrs were told Wed they were being declared “surplus” by co. Mem's were told of termination via 10-min virtual meeting, union claimed, manager read layoff notice, “w/o allowing mem's or union the opportunity 2 unmute 2 ask questions”
L.A. Times began laying off at least 115 people in the newsroom beginning today in an effort to stem deep financial losses. Many cherished colleagues - including some with years of service - are being forced to say good-bye.
A whole article on the #traffic congestion issues faced by #Toronto, and the only solutions suggested are technology based.
Well unless some of that technology includes #Tardus technology so we can physically fit a lot more #cars into a smaller space, it is not going to help.
The only thing that would help is a congestion charge for cars entering the downtown, with the proceeds used to improve #transit, is not even mentioned.
Something I just learned this morning from John Woodside, a climate reporter with the National Observer, writing from COP 28.
He writes: “I’ll start by letting you in on a little open secret: This year (and in past years) the only Canadian media outlet to send reporters aside from the CBC was Canada’s National Observer.”
An incredible and incomprehensible Canadian media fail.
"But what is the role of the West that continues to arm Israel while making somewhat soothing noises about civilian slaughter? How many dead Palestinians are too many? 5,000? 10,000? 15,000?"
I think, actually hope, we will soon have another MS St. Loius moment and realize how badly we have treated a marginalized population, and the deaths that were a direct result of our inaction and blindness
Mastodoners whenever I sign into the #TorontoStar with my normal #Firefox profile (I have many security options enabled) I only get the first few paragraphs of articles. When I just use the default profile it is normal. Any idea what Firefox setting in my profile might be causing this. I'm not getting any responses from my multiple queries. to @TorontoStar
Talks to combine two of the biggest newspaper publishers in #Canada have fallen apart.
#Postmedia Network Canada Corp. and #NordstarCapital LP — the majority owner of the #TorontoStar and dozens of other smaller newspapers — announced last month that they had entered into non-binding discussions about possibly merging together.
I think it goes at the #problem ass-backwards. The competition watchdog is at the wrong place in the workflow to accomplish much. By the time a #deal is announced, it's essentially too late for a #regulator to have a meaningful impact on things.
(Very) occasionally it'll block a #merger or #acquisition, but that's reactive at best.
So #Bell wants to shutdown local tv and radio news, and #PostMedia wants to control print media, and take over the #TorontoStar. Not much left of our 4th and 5th Estate in #Canada. Read your history folks, this is how democracy dies. #Cdnpoli#JustinTrudeau
This offer for the digital edition of the Toronto Star looks pretty good. Only $2 per month for 2 months -- then $19.99 per month for the rest of the year. Much cheaper than the $4 per paper issue.
The paper does a fair bit of investigative #journalism, so it's worth supporting to help keep investigative journalism alive (the #journalists can't do it for free, plus they need the legal protection a large newspaper can provide).
Possible news tip:
Stumbled across this. It's a list of all the properties owned by the Province of #Ontario that are either up for sale, or recently sold. A big concentration are in #Toronto-Mississauga. Most are not listed on the open market.
It includes one listing considered for 41 acres of ravines and parks in the Spadina corridor lands (second link below) -- and also includes the building for the Toronto Archives.
Given there is parkland on the list and land operated by the City there may be a story here for #TorontoStar or other publications to follow-up on.
