Using #Flatpak packages now for some time... and I have to say that there have been no issues at all 🙂
Currently running Signal and Element without any problems - updating is smooth sailing as well.
I should expect that though in the end.
In general: If something is external and I need it, I will be going the #AppImage and #Flatpak route.
Today is the day! — Nitrux 3.4.1 "mi" is available to download
We are pleased to announce the launch of Nitrux 3.4.1. This new version combines the latest software updates, bug fixes, performance improvements, and ready-to-use hardware support.
"Update" itself by removing original AppImage file and placing a fresh version in the same directory.
And that's why I insist on packaging with #Flatpak (by far, just universal way on Linux) or distro formats! Shortcuts to #Beeper and some other apps just keep breaking and breaking, because, when you press "Update" inside the app, it keeps doing such intrusive stuff. Years were put into improving package management just to avoid doing this same mistake. Come on now, don't reinvent the updates.
I’m proud to announce the new, next-gen Linux packaging format: FlatSnappImage!
With centuries of combined packaging design experience, Red Hat, Canonical, and randos on the Internet have created the ONLY format you need. Its revolutionary design includes the best of all worlds:
• Allocating all unused disk space in case its needed in the future
• Proprietary back-end with no human review
• No sandboxing, because it just gets in the way!
Today is the day! — Nitrux 3.4.0 "pl" is available to download
We are pleased to announce the launch of Nitrux 3.4.0. This new version combines the latest software updates, bug fixes, performance improvements, and ready-to-use hardware support.
I don't understand what is the point of releasing an IDE via #flatpak, when that flatpak doesn't include all the necessary dev tools, and it can't access the ones outside its sandboxing. Honestly. What's the point? I'm looking at you, #Geany.
Personally, I can't stand flatpaks or #snap. #Appimage is nicer just because it's just one delete away from within the file manager and doesn't leave crumbs everywhere. But overall, I prefer #apt, and #dnf.
Finally, a new release of my #VGM player, Benben! Version 0.4.0 has a bunch of changes, but the big ones are probably support for #NES music, #Wonderswan music, and various other new chips. Also you can now have it do automatic peak normalization when rendering to WAV or Au.
Enhancement: Added the --normalize command line option for automatic peak normalization of rendered files.
Enhancement: Added the --quiet command line option.
Enhancement: Pressing S will now let you toggle a "quit after current song" option during playback.
Enhancement: Added the equalizer-disabled-during-rendering config option. Turning this on will allow you to normally have an EQ enabled during playback, but also have it automatically disabled when rendering. This also works in per-song config files.
Enhancement: CUE files can now be generated when rendering.
Enhancement: The CPU usage is now shown during playback and rendering.
Enhancement: You can pass a directory to Benben directly and it will play all files it finds in that directory.
Enhancement: Errors that get printed on stderr are now redirected to a file (e.g. ~/.local/share/benben/stderr.log) by default. This is to prevent things such as PortAudio or YunoSynth from printing errors to the screen that can mess up the UI. This can be disabled in the config.
Fixed: JSPF playlist loading works again.
Fixed: You can now go to the next/previous song, or quit, while a song is fading out.
Fixed: The EQ setting now properly "sticks" between songs when it's toggled during playback.
I wish someone would like to make an #AppImage (I don't have the skills needed) and a #MacOS package (I have a set of instructions to follow but no Mac nor Apple signing keys)
Today is the day! — Nitrux 3.3.0 "ab" is available to download
We are pleased to announce the launch of Nitrux 3.3.0. This new version combines the latest software updates, bug fixes, performance improvements, and ready-to-use hardware support.
I've put together a tutorial on how to register an AppImage as a desktop application in Linux, trying to cover as many cases as possible and be as concise as possible, based on my personal experience.
Idea: bundling your cli $EDITOR (:vim: #vim :emacs: #emacs whatever) into a one-file static binary (#Apptainer#Appimage whatever) that you can take with you and will work everywhere, with all plugins and configs already set up. Alternatively as a :nixos: #nix#flake of course, though that's not so easily portable to systems where you don't have root access and the admins don't want to install #Nix
Today is the day! — Nitrux 3.2.1 "se" is available to download
We are pleased to announce the launch of Nitrux 3.2.1. This new version combines the latest software updates, bug fixes, performance improvements, and ready-to-use hardware support.
Today is the day! — Nitrux 3.2.0 "af" is available to download
We are pleased to announce the launch of Nitrux 3.2.0. This new version combines the latest software updates, bug fixes, performance improvements, and ready-to-use hardware support.
I already explained the main differences between most packaging formats, but now, it’s time to look at them in a more critical manner:
Performance benchmarks, missing features, advantages and drawbacks, for #Snaps, #Flatpak, #AppImage and regular good old packages:
everytime something that could've been barely Megabytes as an #AppImage, #FlatPak, #Snap or Kilobytes as a #CLI tool instead shoves yet another entire half gig copy of the #Bloatware-#Browser that is #Chromium onto the Desktop despite using not even 0,1% of it's featureset
I call this a systemic failure in Software Architecture.
Browsers are the most attacked applications on #Linux beyond CMSes and Webservers...
Today is the day! — Nitrux 3.1.0 "fx" is available to download
We are pleased to announce the launch of Nitrux 3.1.0. This new version combines the latest software updates, bug fixes, performance improvements, and ready-to-use hardware support.
"How did I install application XYZ again? It seems to reside in /opt/... hmm I don't even have #appimagelauncher installed on this machine... so probably a local dpkg..."
@nuncio Newbies is misleading. There are many proponents for #flatpak#appimage etc.
Also with immutable distros being the hype currently I am not sure the trend is dying down soon.
