The formerly abandoned Bell Labs building in Holmdel, NJ. At one point slated for demolition, the historic site has since been turned into Bell Works, a multi-use complex that was the filming location for the series Severance.

thinking about the magic ingredients that foster #tech #innovation. #XeroxPARC, #BellLabs, and #MIT's #TMRC appear frequently in the annals of #history - at least those I've read.

The #question is - how do we create such centers of innovation?

I'm still putting it together but I suspect there are at least four:

1 Time- Insane and copious amounts of it
2 Community- Multiple individuals who interact syngeristically
3 Space- A shared space for innovation to occur
4 Equipment- Raw materials

The professional culture of mid-twentieth century communications engineering. According to John Pierce, Richard Hamming (of Hamming window fame) used to have a "great collection of dirty limericks," which he eventually destroyed. Pierce himself made a collage with images of breasts from Playboy taking the place of teeth in a smiling mouth (from Wood's 1991 CMJ interview w Pierce)

Remembering Dennis Ritchie, born this day 1941. I had the great privilege of working with Dennis during my summer at Bell Labs. This is his "What am I doing in a suit?" photo.

Twelve years I started with Perl and I still can't remember EVERY TIME which one between ^ and $ should be used to match begin and end of regex pattern 🤔

Any mnemonic or memory aid? I can use a cheat sheet, but come on…

@smonff @Perl Y’all know I’m the first to crow about unique features, but ’ syntax of ^ for the start of a line or string and $ for the end dates back at least to co-author Ken Thompson’s rewrite of the qed text editor for the operating system on the IBM 7090 at around 1970. (Perl creator Larry Wall was a teenager at the time.)
