#BOTD Montague Summers. Described as "arguably the most seminal twentieth century purveyor of pop culture occultism", Summers was ordained as an Anglican deacon, but converted to Catholicism, styling himself as a priest despite having no diocese. Initially noted for literary scholarship, he became notorious for his books on witches, werewolves, vampires and demonology, for which he claimed to entirely believe. #books #occult

American , & writer. He wrote the episodes "Shore Leave" & "Amok Time”, featuring the first appearance of pon farr, the Vulcan mating ritual, & the 🖖 symbol. He also wrote Trek scripts that weren’t produced, one of these introducing the Prime Directive. The SF&F HOF inducted Sturgeon in 2000.

Sturgeon’s Law: "90% of [science fiction] is crud, but then, 90% of everything is crud."

The Pyramid Books 1960 first printing of “The Strangest Science-Fiction Novel Theodore Sturgeon Has Ever Written,” “Venus Plus X” illustrated by Victor Kalin. In the foreground what appears to be an ancient marble statue of a woman, her arms missing and lost to time. In the background two indecipherable figures appear.
“The First NEW Collection In Years From THE Master of Science Fiction,” “Sturgeon In Orbit,” “Stories by Theodore Sturgeon.” The Pyramid Books 1964 first printing with cover by Ed Emshwiller. A profile of Sturgeon’s head atop some odd Emshwiller space machinery/vortex sporting devil horns and a halo as a blonde woman and a creature flee from the top of his head. Nearby an astronaut is miserable, a mermaid rides a unicorn, and an infant takes it all in.
This 1972 Marvel comic screams “Supernatural Thrillers featuring IT! From the World-Famous Chiller by THEODORE STURGEON.” “The THING That Couldn’t Die!” Issue #1 cover by Jim Steranko. Inside is an adaptation of the story by Roy Thomas and Marie Severin. "It" is a horror short story first published in John W. Campbell’s “Unknown” of August, 1940. The story deals with a muck-monster that emerges from a swamp, and terrorizes a family who lives nearby. The creature has no emotions, and is simply curious about the things that it observes. Its terrifying strength allows it to grab animals and people and tear them apart, to see how they work. Ultimately, the creature is revealed to have formed around a human skeleton. P. Schuyler Miller described "It" as "probably the most unforgettable story ever published in Unknown". The story was published in book form in Sturgeon's first short story collection, Without Sorcery (1948). The story inspired many similar characters in comic books, including The Heap, Swamp Thing and Man-Thing.
