An unusual example of a lowland broch. The elusive Tappoch (or Torwood) Broch is located near Denny in central Scotland, concealed within a dense (though now partly cleared) forest. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/denny/tappochbroch/index.html

Broch of Gurness, on the northern part of the main island of Orkney. Iron Age of course. The central tower was about three times its current height. It surrounded by a small village that was built later (possibly after the broch collapsed or been shortened).

It's forty minutes walk from the nearest bus stop. (I get on the bus and ask for a ticket to Evie? You're going to the broch, asks the bus driver. The second stop is closer and less traffic, he says. He'll drop me at the second stop.) But it doesn't feel like forty minutes and way worth it.

Afternoon walk

Taking advantage of the weather and a trip to one of the three remaining Brochs in The Borders, Bow Castle Broch.

A very enjoyable walk through the woods to the Broch and then back past the Wind Turbines.

A view of Dun Telve Broch, south-east of Glenelg in Lochalsh. Over 18m in diameter and standing in part to over 10m in height, it is one of Scotland's best preserved brochs and one of a pair that are located within sight of one another. Dun Dornaigil Broch, reached from the north coast of Sutherland by a narrow single-track road that passes Loch Hope and Ben Hope. It is one of the more enigmatic brochs in Scotland as it has never been excavated. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/durness/dundornaigil/index.html

This was a major goal: see Mousa Broch 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
a living miracle that a ~2000 y/o tower in the British Isles is still standing basically intact
A long way to go but worth every second

Inside Mousa Broch on the now uninhabited island of Mousa in Shetland. Mousa Broch rises to 13m high and is both magnificent and awe inspiring. It is also by some margin the best preserved of Scotland's 500 or so brochs. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/mousa/mousabroch/index.html

The Broch of Gurness, the wonderfully evocative remains of an Iron Age broch and village overlooking Eynhallow Sound on Orkney's West Mainland. It was built as a planned settlement some time before 200BC. The site was excavated in 1929. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/westmainland/brochofgurness/index.html
