Sudan had largest number of people facing extreme food shortages in 2023, UN report shows (www.theguardian.com)

Sudan had the world’s largest number of people facing extreme food shortages in 2023 as conflict and displacement drove food insecurity globally, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The war between rival generals meant Sudan accounted for two-thirds of the additional 13.5 million people needing...

@monde_paysan
www.cirad.fr/les-actualites-du-cirad/actualites/2024/agricultures-familiales-vitales-pour-la-planete

Having used data in my work, this is a worrying read.

“A recent paper by Matthew Hayek, the assistant professor in environmental sciences at New York University, said that the FAO’s use of modelling – rather than verifiable monitoring data – could underestimate methane emissions from livestock by up to 90% in countries such as the US.”

During my (almost) 5 years as a Senator, I've never yet had an opportunity to travel abroad to represent the Senate. But this week, I'm part of small delegation of 3 Senators who will attend the Plenary Assembly of the Global Soil Partnership in Rome, an event hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations; this is part of our Senate soil health study. https://www.fao.org/global-soil-partnership/about/plenary-assembly/en/#:~:text=GSP%20Plenary%20Assembly,balanced%20regional%20decision%2Dmaking%20process.

Paulatics,

International trips are expensive. I thought long and hard about the ethics and optics of going on this trip. But this conference is big; the lectures we'll hear & contacts we'll make will be a huge boon to our big Senate study of Canadian soil health and the ways we can use soil organic carbon to make our soil more fertile, and fight climate change. If anyone in Mastodon-land is going to be at the Global Soil Partnership Plenary this week, please let me know!
