Decided to test (again)/how #GrapheneOS works for me without Play Services. Not going well, to be honest. I had never thought that just about all the apps I care about require Firebase notifications.
To be clear, this is not about GrapheneOS, but about the sad sad state of mobile devices. Home Assistant Lite from F-Droid can do notifications, but just never realized it also depends on Google. The myriad of error notifications after removing GSF was a bit overkill on HA.
Turns out part of my issue was due to my Nextcloud instances UP Provider not working anymore. No errors in logs, no idea why, so set up a #ntfy instance. That solves notifications for #Matrix#ElementX
#tchncs now hosts a #ntfy push service. If you were already trying ntfy.sh with eg. Mastodon or Matrix but it didn't work, that's because the .sh instance blocks ip's after a certain amount of requests per minute. With https://push.tchncs.de, you can give it another shot.
Configurations such as quota/our own ratelimit are not final yet (but i try my best to make it fair)
Yesterday, while adding support for #ntfy, I introduced a small bug that causes duplicate notifications on #snac2. My fault 🙂 I've already sent the PR with the fix to the developer.
The coming release of #Fedilab fixes annoying crashes. We will add the support to Android 14 and also, we will add a fix that will prevent issues with #NTFY (ntfy.sh for push notifications - #Fdroid release is only impacted).
We will publish that release this week in our custom Fdroid repo and for Google beta testers.
Great! 🤦♂️
Turns out the Feds and other Governments have been spying on all push notifications the whole time and using it to even de-anonymise users on anonymous messenger apps.
And they placed a gag order on Apple to prevent them from letting users know about this.
I enjoy #selfhosting some services at home. But the best thing I've recently spun up has to be #ntfy. The ability to pipe the notification command into my rendering pipeline free's me from checking the status constantly. This way, if the render completes, fails or stalls, I get a phone push notification.
@changelog my dudes! Just catching up on the episode with @ntfy. I have been loving Pushover. But you just changed the game with sharing that #ntfy can be #selfhosted! Incredible news.
This week @jerod goes solo with Philipp Heckel, creator of ntfy, to discuss this simple HTTP-based service that lets you send notifications to your phone or desktop via scripts from any computer📲
They discuss why he built it, how he built it, and what his plans are for the future of this beloved side hustle 🏃♂️
Set up ntfy.sh yesterday and am really digging its flexibility. Admittedly I've got no clue how to integrate like... 90% of what it's capable of, but being able to roll my own push notifications for things like media, uptime, and automations from Home Assistant.
We used to post them on our forum... sometimes on #GitHub, sometimes via changelog, sometimes not at all. It was pretty haphazard, involved a lot of manual steps, and we needed to do better.
So we decided to throw some #code (and some #nocode) at this problem and centralized it all while keeping a bunch of options open for interested parties 👇
Special shout-out to @binwiederhier for his part in making the push notification and email portions happen via #ntfy! Happy to become a supporter just for the reserved topic (and to support the project of course 😉)
Also curl push/post is very noice and allows me to not shove an extra executeable for #ntfy support and just write a function() in an alias file or shell script.
