There's something comforting in hearing about a upgrade from v1.1.6 to v3.5.2, running with no problems whatsoever.

A lot of breaking changes and DB schema updates happened between those versions!!

Back in late July, we took a chance and applied for the @NGIZero NGI0 Core August 2023 call for projects. Our application dealt almost entirely with bringing to , and we're happy to announce that we've been officially greenlit!

Looking forward to working in tandem with some other highly esteemed colleagues @helge and @tchambers with their testing suites too 🙂 (edit: @J12t too!)

The other small part of our application dealt with much-needed accessibility audits and fixes 💪

The Two-Factor Authentication plugin that comes bundled with was just updated to v7.4.0. It now notifies you if your account was accessed, but the second factor challenge was not passed. If you see this notification, and it wasn't you, you just might want to change your now-compromised password!

Oft forgotten, this feature provides much needed positive reinforcement that, yeah, works!

nodebb,
@nodebb@fosstodon.org avatar

The impetus for this feature was initially from a one-off blog post I read over two years ago (perhaps by @ravelin...?)

It still rings true today.

@ravelin ah well, worth a shot! 😁

splatsune, to fediverse

Ya know, since projects like @nodebb have mentioned wanting to bring in federation, I realise that that could end up being a strength of AP's implementations - choosing your preferred format of discussion.

A lot of us have been lamenting the loss of small community forums in favour of Discord servers, and Discord's own built-in forums leave something to be desired.

But it's struck me that since / communities are easy enough to participate in on services like , and - Why wouldn't federated message boards be the same way?

Hell, why couldn't a message board have a forum that's just a subscription to a link-sharing community? Why couldn't Lemmy/Kbin users be able to follow a forum?

There's some exciting inter-operability ideas to be had as software grows around this standard.

nodebb,
@nodebb@fosstodon.org avatar

@splatsune yes! That's exactly the exciting kind of interoperability I'm really itching to explore. users following a tag or category is one thing, but having two-way discussions naturally shared through other interfaces like would be so awesome!

@jacqueline@chaos.social avatar

is there a fediverse forum-equivalent? kiiind of like your kbins and your lemmies, but more focused on discussion than aggregation?

nodebb,
@nodebb@fosstodon.org avatar

@jepyang @jacqueline yes! Still very much in development at the moment, however.

question for the hivemind.

When using a , and you quote a post, do you expect to be able to edit the post (i.e. to add emphasis, truncate unnecessary parts, etc.)?

It's possible to structure quoted posts like "references", so a reference to a deleted post is also empty. This has advantages when it comes to the Right to Erasure, but may be a grey area (is a quoted post still YOUR post?).

The negative cost is a hit to UX.

nodebb,
@nodebb@fosstodon.org avatar

Thanks @richardcrawshaw! A lot of that makes sense, although I am not sure from a technical standpoint whether we can have a "best of both worlds" approach where a quoted post is a reference only if not edited.

We used to post them on our forum... sometimes on , sometimes via changelog, sometimes not at all. It was pretty haphazard, involved a lot of manual steps, and we needed to do better.

So we decided to throw some (and some ) at this problem and centralized it all while keeping a bunch of options open for interested parties 👇

As a follow-up to https://mastodon.social/@danluu/109798007902048311, I wonder why there isn't a serious, well-funded, attempt to create a modern forum

If you look at Wikipedia's list of forum software, it's all ancient except discourse, and discourse seems unlikely to ever be something great for users

Its performance is famously terrible. People often point out how unusable it is unless you have a fast phone and the founder's response to this has been to rant about how Qualcomm sucks and need to make faster processors

nodebb,
@nodebb@fosstodon.org avatar

@danluu FWIW we don't ban Bing 🙂

nodebb,
@nodebb@fosstodon.org avatar

@zrail @danluu 💯. The foundation to a healthy vibrant forum is active and transparent moderation that scales with the user base.

We've lost forums to Discord in recent years because businesses don't acknowledge that a forum requires active moderation. They switch to Discord because trolls and negativity fall away the older it gets, so they whittle down their mod team and save money, but the loss to the community and data retention is a much worse trade-off.

Something funny came across our desk this morning... Apparently @cloudron's subcategory is ranking so well it's attracting general questions about the software itself, and even outranks the MatterMost subreddit!

We'll take the win 😀 Baris has been spending some time recently optimizing our metadata, and it seems to be paying off. The real MVP is their community content ✍️

That said is still witchcraft and wizardry, and nobody will change my mind.

Wife's phone in for screen replacement, so I lent her mine. In the meantime, back to my trusty old 6.1

This phone was released in 2018 (!!) and is still supported by the amazing maintainers working with @LineageOS

In fact, I have the option to sideload 20, which is Android 13 🤯

Admittedly the phone runs a tad slow.

tl;dr — The upcoming 3.3.0 release will add support for public group chats and allow bigger rooms. 🎊

We've put in a whole bunch of effort to refactor the chat system to support this, bringing us just that little bit closer to replacing incumbents like IRC/Discord/Slack, check it out on our forum, or take a stroll down memory lane and read up on the history of our chat implementation 👇
