I can't get over the following direct quote, which is from the middle of a training session provided by my company's new (probably lower-budget) HR/training vendor:

"Using the office guillotine when you're upset about a tough meeting earlier is not a good idea."

The Web Development Glossary books and website just received a facelift and additional content!

If you purchased the book and don’t get updates automatically, the new version (1.1.118) should be worth a manual re-download. For website users, the site just caught up with the book again:

When you search for web design and development glossaries you find a huge amount of pages covering, say, 10 (!) to 100 terms: https://www.google.com/search?q=web+development+glossary

Continuously working on a glossary book and site, I don’t feel like the 3,800+ terms currently covered are even close.

Try the site and I’m sure you still find something that’s missing (please tell me!):

I'm excited to announce a new publication by Lisa Borrelli and myself, out now in Comparative Migration Studies. We challenge our peers to be more precise with how we describe immigrants and their descendants, criticizing in particular the terms 'second generation' and 'migration background'. @sociology #immigration #terminology #quantitative #ethnicity

To use or not tu use the term ""? 🔥

After Linley et al. (2022) suggested a standardized definition (> 10,000 ha extent) to reduce ambiguity, a new perspective by Stoof et al. (2023) recommends not using the term at all in science:

I'm a fan of clear definitions and standardization of , but at the same point, also wondering if we really need a special term for fires of a certain extent?

What's open and what's not in "open" ?

This complicates an already complex landscape, in which there is currently no agreed on definition of ‘open’ in the context of AI."

Recent examples of people trying to describe or related topics really show how the majority of people got indoctrinated into this mobile-first mentality. It's not a server-side platform, it's an app on your phone. How does it work? Who knows, but it's more complicated than TikTok, so it's bad.

If phones are really so awesome, then why isn't there more effort being put into making them properly replace PCs?

Overall I'm kind of just of the view that blocking Meta's hypothetical server preemptively is just the most… performative, useless gesture

To annoy everyone who reads this for a moment, however:

It does encompass what many leftists (and liberals) seem to think of as "taking action." A nice moral test. Easy to pontificate about. Feels good. Let's you talk in grandiose terms. Easy for an individual to do. Largely ineffective both short and long term.

I swear we are our own worst enemies.

@lanodan I mean Linked Data Proofs as defined in JSON Web Signatures for Data Integrity Proofs (
https://www.w3.org/TR/vc-jws-2020/#terminology) and elsewhere. No quotes needed. The spec has had iterations over time (c.f. https://github.com/w3c-ccg/ld-signatures )

But no, I am not "advertising for the security of data brokers over the security of users." I am saying that the mastodon spec implementing this is so out of date that they don't even use a compatible suite. They use RsaSignature2017 which isn't in https://w3id.org/security/v2

Talking about “non-native speakers” without mentioning any specific language…

Is this even possible? Are there people with only one or more L2 but no L1? We're all native speakers, but of different languages.

So maybe, what was meant was rather “a multilingual audience”

Kind of funny: What Windows used to call "wallpaper", MacOS used to call "desktop background". Now Windows 11 barely mentions the word "wallpaper" and calls it "desktop background", but in Ventura, macOS now has a "Wallpaper" settings area.

We all know that central planning doesn't work. We also know that unregulated markets don't work.

Our discourse would be so much more intelligent if we just dropped dysfunctional terminology like capitalism, socialism, etc.
