Link: The problem with sticky menus and what to do instead 🔗 Been dealing with a sticky nav at work. Tend to agree they’re a symptom of muddled information design.

Today's papercut regression bug report on @GTK : the FileChooser does not auto-scroll to the preselected item when using "Visit File" from the right-click menu to reveal it within the context of its containing folder. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/5799

Non-techie here!

Question: I migrated to Mastodon from Twitter about 6 months ago. When I came here, the advice I read over and again was to use tags to find interesting posts and people. But I see so few people using tags. Why? Are they not useful after a certain time on the platform?

Anyone that has ever done some usability design and/or research saw this coming. The tactile feedback is simply unrivalled.

The inclusive design principles by @tink @iheni @heydon and @IanPouncey are back after a bit of a lie down

“These Inclusive Design Principles are about putting people first. It's about designing for the needs of people with permanent, temporary, situational, or changing disabilities — all of us really.”

I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing this kind of thing.

Are there any usability studies out there about the design of older operating systems or GUIs for the likes of OS/2, Irix, CDE, NextSTEP?

You can still see many concepts from that era today but some things have been dropped, others added, some have evolved, while others were simply unique. I’ve seen studies for Win95, where decisions behind taskbar and windowing are explained. Is there anything like that for other OS?

Every hashtag on every post on every platform should ALWAYS be pascal case (a.k.a. camel case). I made this to illustrate how screenreaders read hashtags depending on whether they are lowercase or pascal case.

It’s a small thing that all of us can do to build a more inclusive, accessible internet for all. Please take the time to use pascal case.

#Introduction

Hi! I'm Morgan, a #Software engineer living in western #EU. I work as a lead developer, with an increasing focus on the #HumanFactors involved in making software. I'm also pursuing a #Psychology degree with the aim of becoming a better #UX #UI designer. When I write code I use #Java and #Typescript but i'd like to go back to #Ada someday.

I also love #Music (yes, all of it)! Share your favorite song with me! 🎶 I'm learning how to play #Drums and might dip my toes into #MusicProduction in the future.

I've been interested in decentralized tech like #Matrix and #IPFS for quite some time. And I still hold a tiny bit of hope that #Blockchain might yield something good eventually (but I don't have a pyramid scheme to sell you I promise).

Also I drink way too much #Tea .

Extra keywords that didn't fit nicely into the prose:

That’s not how 2FA works

Another day, another high-profile website cloned to phish credentials.

https://twitter.com/_tessr/status/1350475941026390021

In the replies, you’ll see lots of techbros saying “this is why you should switch on 2FA people!!!”

Except, and I hate to bring accuracy to a technical discussion, that’s not how 2FA works!

A second factor allows a site to bette
