Hey every one, I wrote a small article on the fact there should be more relationships in stories and not just ships and I 100% didn't write this because I was salty my ship wasn't cannon. https://justwritingwithjesse.blogspot.com/2024/04/writing-advice-create-relationships-not.html

Hey everyone, I made an article that got popular on Tumblr about the trope of where a person of colour never stays as themselves throughout a majority of the stories which features them. If you're interested, you can read it here: https://justwritingwithjesse.blogspot.com/2024/04/writing-advice-magically-changing-your.html

Hey everyone, my post about the magical black person trope is now available on my website! The article talks about how it's very common to see black characters in stories where their only role is to aid the white protagonist.

Time to put another AI author on blast, this time it’s the person who made the AI Willy Wonka "Experience". If you’re unsure what I just said, a guy named Billy Coull created a Willy Wonka “Experience” and created the entire event using AI. It sounds weird and it looked bad. Here are some links to a few articles about him and the whole experience if you want a more in-depth look into this guy. I’m just the cliff notes.

Daily Mail "The face behind Willy Wonka 'scam': How Billy Coull 'conned' kids by using AI generated images to sell 'immersive' experience, sold Chat-GPT authored novels on Amazon, and faced backlash for cancelling Santa grotto"

The National "Willy Wonka Glasgow: Video shows moment furious parents confront boss Billy Coull"

https://www.thenational.scot/news/24154348.i-ragdoll-about-angry-dad-confronts-willy-wonka-boss/

Sportskeeda "Who is Billy Coull? Man behind the 'Willy Wonka Experience' trolled online after photographs from the scam event go viral"

There's not much I need to say about this guy which those articles haven't already covered. The dude loves AI, and everything he touches has AI in it. Down below is a screenshot of his website followed by his Amazon author page. If you see these books, stay away from them.

From left to right they are "The Biohazard Protocol" "Crimson Eclipse: Chronicles of the Last Dawn" "Echoes of Illumination" "Threads of Enigma: 1 (The Enigma)"
"The Enigma's Resurgence: Threads of Destiny", "The Hidden Bible" "The Shadow Directive (Shadows)" "Eclipse of Power"
"The Quantum Paradox", "The Codebreaker's Enigma: Unraveling History's Secrets", "The Prophecy Matrix", "The Memory Trap: Unraveling the Secrets of Memory Technology"

So I try and give writing advice because I enjoy it, however, I don’t know everything and I would like to ask for your advice on this topic. I received some feedback from a beta reader, not to end my chapters with dialogues and when I tried to look up what other people's opinions were, I couldn't get a clear reason.

Before I begin, I want to state that I don’t hate my beta reader, I think they did a fine job. I just want to understand the no dialogue endings as maybe it’s a rule within the writing community which I missed.

Some of the points that my beta reader gave me are that it feels like the chapters end mid-conversation, it’s annoying, and repetitive (to be fair I did it a lot).

In my beta reader's opinion, a chapter should end with one of the following: a surprise, a promise, a question (that’s not huh?), humour or themes. I don’t disagree with these statements, I’m just curious why can’t a chapter ending with a dialogue still address one of those points?

To answer your question, eleven out of 15 chapters ended with dialogues. Yeah I can tone it back a little but my beta reader said they could only handle one or two chapters ending with dialogue so I asked the question, does this come down to reader preference or am I missing something in the writing community? I tried looking this up but couldn’t find anyone giving me a good reason to not end chapters with a dialogue. What are your thoughts?

@Trajecient Here's all of the comments about my dialogue ending chapters. The feedback does come across as a "don't do this" especially when they said they could only handle like one or two.

While personally I don't think my conversations end abruptly, that's something I'm willing to go back on. This was just the first time I received this feedback and I couldn't find out a reason why ending a chapter with a dialogue was bad. I do understand it may be repetitive after all I did it 11 times out of 15 chapters, but I never thought it was bad or would make someone upset.

"That is a rather sudden ending. I feel like the chapter ending mid conversation. Is there any way to conclude the conversation and then have Cjaee exit scene for some reason?"

"I don’t recall how many times the chapters have ended with dialogue, but I am seeing a pattern that the chapters are ending with dialogue, and that is just annoying and repetitive."

"Another dialogue ending..."

"Another dialogue ending. I already made an end note about it."

"There are just so many dialogue endings. But I guess this one can stay, if the other endings are changed."

"Another dialogue ending?"

"So the story did know how to end a chapter. I’m keeping my end comment about chapter endings at the end. I just feel there are too many dialogue endings."

"Yeah, I feel like the chapter ended, but it’s a dialogue ending again."

"A lot of the chapter endings end with dialogue, and while I can handle one or two of them, too many of them make it repetitive. Here are some ideas for chapter endings: a surprise, a promise, a question (not huh?), humor, theme. Whatever the chapter ending, I need something to keep me reading forward."

Can you all help and report my Twitter account that's been hacked? I would like to thank @nemacocy for reminding me about the missing children's category as I discovered more things wrong with Goodreads.

There’s only 15 categories compared to every other year which had 20.

First thing first, the awards are all done online and there’s no trophy for the winner so why did they made this selection smaller? Is it because they weren’t popular? Who cares if the paranormal fantasy category doesn’t get a lot of votes compared to normal fantasy? There’s no physical trophy to create. Let the paranormal fantasy fans be able to vote for who they think is the best book of that year.

If for some reason you have to have a max of 15 categories then it’ll be best to combine them. Instead of the best YA fantasy and fiction, make it the best YA book. Git rid of the Romantasy category, there’s already a romance section, just add fantasy romance books in that category. Fiction, science fiction, and historical fiction should be combined as well. They all fall under the fiction unbrella.

Instead of 15 categories, there’s now 11 and plenty of room to add the missing categories such as I don’t know, maybe the children's category or the graphic novel section? I know there’s going to be people reading this upset that I combine a few of these categories which is why I can’t understand for a virtual choice awards why they would restrict themselves?

Even categories that aren’t popular such as the food one have a reason to exist. I don’t know how to cook, and after discovering a cookbook that won best of the year, I might be willing to buy it.

Literacy is important, and there are several different kinds of literacy. Scrubbing some of the lesser categories is very telling. It tells me Goodreads doesn’t care about literacy but instead, engagement to its website.

I chatted with a mate about my Taino heritage because he's also Taino and he discovered I'm not just Taino, but Afro - Taino according to my DNA results. I honestly never knew this. I knew my DNA results had stuff like the Congo, Northern Africa, Indigenous South American, and so on. But I didn't know what that meant.

I want to know more about where I came from, what my people and culture was like. I want to understand my history better.

I was curious if there was anyone who's also Afro - Taino who might be able to help guide me on where to look? Who to talk to, etc.

I'm still learning what it means to be Taino, but now I want to know what it means to be Afro - Taino. I want to know what happened to my people, etc. There's so much more stuff I want to know I honestly don't know where to even start.

I only have 2,000 characters so if you want to read this in full please check out my Tumblr down below. This is part 2 of me talking about Taino people and Christopher Columbus.

You see when Chrisdick came over, we welcomed him.

We had no idea who these people were, we had no reason to be hostile. Why did we gave them silver and gold? We had no need for it. We lived off the island, we hunt, swam, slept outside, we had no desire for silver and gold. We didn’t had an economy and we didn’t had the tools to make the types of weapons or armour the Spaniards had so we just gave them the stuff.

Not only did we gave them silver and gold, we also gave them our woman and virgins. It was to help with relations. Our woman would go with them to this new land, and return us with information, new families, and wonders of the outside...that never happened. Giving the Spaniards silver, gold, and woman, was all in the hopes they would give us something in return, but the only thing they gave was diseases that made everyone sick. They took, and took, and took, and then they left.

When we refused to give them anymore, that’s when things got violent. They pillage our village’s, killed the strongest and told the weak to go digging for more silver and gold. That was when the slavery began, when we didn’t want to give anymore, they decided to take instead.

How could we stop them? They had guns and we had spears and arrows. They made us sick and we couldn’t fight back. They already won the war before it started.

Why do you think Puerto Rico is called Puerto Rico? It translates to “Port of Riches” because of how rich it made the Spaniards. Once they were done being rich and taking from our land, they took us instead so we could work for them. An estimated 7-8 million Taino people died in just a few decades.

Google Bard AI is a thing and it's as bad as you think. I asked it if the Taino people are around today and the response I got was "The Taíno people are not alive today as a distinct ethnic group."

First of all, yes we are alive, but then it goes on to say that those who "claim" to be Taino are actually "Neo-Taino" which first of all. I've been engaging with the Taino community and I never once heard of Neo-Taino before.

Bard AI also goes on to say this.

"Some scholars argue that the Neo-Taíno movement is not a legitimate continuation of Taíno culture, but rather a kind of cultural appropriation. They argue that the Neo-Taínos do not have a clear connection to the Taíno people, and that they are often more interested in creating a new identity than in preserving Taíno culture."

First of all, fuck you Bard AI, white scholars don't get to decide if we're alive or not, we're alive! We're Taino!

When I asked it for it's links, were is it getting it's information from I received this.

"I'm not able to help with that, as I'm only a language model."

Which is just a chef kiss response. Something created by Google can't go through the internet to give me links for its bullshit questions.

Forgot to mention it also said this. "Ultimately, the question of whether or not the Neo-Taíno claim is valid is a complex one. There is no easy answer, and there are valid arguments to be made on both sides."

There's no both side, we're alive, our culture is only dying because of responses like this that ignores our existence. If people just listened to us, they would see we've been here all the time.

You can submit feedback to Bard AI and maybe they'll fix it, but as of right now, the Taino people don't exist, but "Neo-Taino's" do and even that's up for debate.

We do exist, and we're here to stay. Spread our name across the ocean and the sea. When you look at us tell me what do you see? Taino and you better believe.
