Several years ago, my grandson, about 3 years old at the time, got dropped off at our house for the day because my daughter had errands to do. I asked him “what’s daddy doing today that you had to come here with us?”. (1/2)

His answer: “Da went away with his friends to pet horses”. That didn’t clear things up as we live many miles from anywhere where there are horses, pettable or not. Later, my daughter was able to clear up our confusion. Da had gone to the Kentucky Derby with some friends. The little guy had no clue what betting entailed but petting made perfect sense to him. It’s the 100th anniversary of the death of my paternal grandmother. Her name was Giovannina (Jenny) D’Anna. I’ve been trying for several years to track down information about her with limited success. I know that she died shortly after my dad’s sister was born, but have never found any official record of the cause. She was barely 20 years old. My dad was two.

Anyway, Jenny, I wish I could have known you. My life may have been very different with you in it.
