@bikepedantic My teenager, who has a birthday this week, asked if he should put his gift that came in the mail "under the birthday tree." But joke's on him cos I put the tree away two weeks ago!

We need at leasst 17 more people using the hashtag (on public posts) to have a shot of trending.

Why do I care? Because Mastodon isn't the greatest for discoverability. I think BikeNite is a cool community and I would like to see more cyclists able to find us and participate in this a/synchronous weekly structured chat. @mastobikes @fedibikes @bikenite

As for cycling "gear," I only wear it if I'm riding my MTB more than 10 miles. And my women's jerseys have the same pockets that men's do. Maybe MTB shirts don't? I don't fit in those.

Shoot, I should have asked this during . Does anyone have great resources for training corkers/ride leaders for group rides? We improv’d for @KidicalMass last time and I am hoping to do more/better this time. Thanks!

HayiWena,
@HayiWena@mastodon.online avatar

@marcprecipice @KidicalMass Are you looking for something more than the Bike League's Smart Cycling? The guy who started Kidical Mass is a League Cycling Instructor coach--he led my LCI seminar.

Oh, is "corking" stopping traffic? Because LCIs aren't allowed to do that. It's also probably not covered by insurance.

Tips for helping follow the chat when Mastodon's tools sometimes frustrate that:

  • Follow @ascentale, who is the volunteer host right now.

  • Boost any replies you like and/or think others should see. Looking for them helps you follow & boosting them helps others see them.

@skinnylatte I dunno, I feel like UX peaked during the GeoCities years. So much is broken now. Like, I can't get Delta's website to work so I can book a family trip.

Random: Worst invention ever: Bluetooth earbuds are way too easy to lose. And always run out of battery when you need them most. Plus if you need to hear out of an ear you've got to figure out where to stash them.

HayiWena,

@ai6yr bone conducting headphones solve these problems. My OpenRun ones have surprisingly good battery life.

Future cargo trailer hauling MTB... if I can get it back up to speed. But now it has shiny stickers (but no tires... yet... since the online retailer I purchased the new tires from apparently sends their packages by mule train).

Same mountain bike, still with rotted tires, but now has blindly yellow white and black reflective stickers

HayiWena,

@LabSpokane @ai6yr @bud_t swapping out cables, and sometimes housing, is relatively cheap ($10 for cables and maybe $40 if you buy them with housing, cheaper at a bike co-op) and it's so so so worth it. I'm old Walmart bikes I put a drop off oil on both ends of the housing and shift the cable through its full range to spread it about, but that's for bikes I don't care about that won't be treated well by the people who receive them. My bikes get new cable and sometimes housing.

HayiWena,
@HayiWena@mastodon.online avatar

@c_dan4th @ai6yr @LabSpokane @bud_t The original pedals are probably pretty heavy and road pedals are small without the clips and straps. +1 for the RaceFace Chesters. I have them on my MTB. The spikes can tear up your shin if you're not careful, but better than losing your footing. I just put bearclaw pedals on my cargo bike after 5,000 mi on the stock Ergon that only have sandpaper for grip. The sandpaper wore off and I started losing my grip. Note that the Chesters don't have reflectors.

HayiWena,
@HayiWena@mastodon.online avatar

@ai6yr @c_dan4th @LabSpokane @bud_t Bar ends are great for dangling a grocery bag off. They also give you different hand positions. We don't yank on them to pull the front end up while climbing because we have wide cage cassettes and all the gears now (plus, it means fat old ladies like me can go up mountains now too), but bar ends are still popular amongst utility cyclists!

NEW PAPER from me and a wonderful team of collaborators: ✨A Street-Specific Analysis of Level of Traffic Stress Trends in Strava Bicycle Ridership and its Implications for Low-Stress Bicycling Routes in Toronto✨

It's short and it's open access!

https://findingspress.org/article/92109-a-street-specific-analysis-of-level-of-traffic-stress-trends-in-strava-bicycle-ridership-and-its-implications-for-low-stress-bicycling-routes-in-toron

HayiWena,
@HayiWena@mastodon.online avatar

@mbonsma @footsteps There's probably a big difference between Strava subscribers (who are more sporty) and free users like me who don't use their tools like assigning a particular bike or type of ride. And I only recently switched to a Garmin that differentiates eBike rides. Only to say, beyond location, there's probably a lot of noise in Strava data.

HayiWena,
@HayiWena@mastodon.online avatar

@dragonfrog I made a Strava account in 2020 for the virtual Seattle to Portland ride and kept it going for that reason--no utility trips and I knew cities were starting to look at Strava as a source of bike count data. So now I happily upload my endless 1-mile grocery runs down quiet neighborhood streets crossing the main road at a signal. Strava still won't capture kids biking to school, but it's a start, I guess.

Years ago, I subscribed to WSDOT's Cooperative Automated Transportation list serve. At the time (2019), the industry was exceedingly bullish for Autonomous Vehicles. As my interest waned (and the industry collapsed), I stopped reading the digest (but never unsubscribed). I just took a peek at a recent one and it's really satisfying to see the change in tone. A selection of headlines in the next post. 1/2

Freelancing/self employment tip (for newbies): W2 wage is not the same as 1099 pay, due to self employment tax/Medicare/SS. $1/hour W2 is not $1 if paid on a 1099 (same rate on a 1099 would be a pay cut). Learned this long ago. #freelancing #contracting #selfemployment
