This week I've been mainly reading, no. 153.

Each of Emma Newman's Planetfall quartet explores a different aspect of the same overarching story of religious driven intergalactic migration. In Atlas Alone (2019), the fourth story centres on an elite gamer & their attempt to uncover & then take revenge for a crime against humanity. To say much more would ruin the plot for you, but as with the others, this is great, fascinating sci-fi, which has a great payoff at the end.

Not sure if there are any Latin/Jazz music lovers out there; I'm plugging my good friend, former college roommate, and fellow musician, Jon Ball as he joins
"Gonzalo Grau & La Clave Secreta" at the Lincoln Center in NYC!
This ~ 2 hour event will be live-streamed on the Lincoln Center website as well as YouTube (link below).
La Clave Secreta has been together for 15 years and their eclectic blend is son cubano, jazz, rhumba, R&B, and funk... so tune-in an turn it up! 7:30p EST ⟶ there's a countdown timer on the YouTube site that should align with anyone's time zone)
⟶ If you know someone who might like some free, live music streamed tonight, boost it out! ⟵

They have some vids up on YouTube if anyone wants to get a taste of their vibe. Like this great rendition of a Stevie Wonder song "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing" that they shot in the recording studio.

Did you know Minecraft is celebrating its 15th anniversary? This day 15 years ago a first public version of Minecraft got released - Java Edition Classic 0.0.11a 🎉 🎂

Before you get dumbstruck by how old this game is now, and how we all are getting older with it, you can read a wiki page on anniversary celebrations:

"The defense spent a whole day casting Cohen as a liar and elicited admissions that he had lied under oath during past cases, allowing them to cast some doubt on aspects of the story he’s told at this trial. But prosecutors will have three days to prepare for a crucial re-direct, in which they will seek to build Cohen back up and refocus the jurors on the most important elements of their case." - reporting from the courtroom, Jonah Bromwich, NYT

One thing I learned from my tiling theory students this semester: Each of the 12 pentominoes can be decomposed into nine smaller pentominoes. Here's a decomposition of all 12 using exactly nine sets of pentominoes. (I believe the configuration is due to Aad van de Wetering.)

@NeadReport@vivaldi.net avatar

My son loves to sit out on our front steps and feed the blue jays peanuts (in the shell). And now my wife and I have taken to doing the same. Jays are Corvids and that means they are very smart birds. They come around about the same time each day and announce themselves with various calls and screeches. We will attract upwards of 5-6 jays at a time; perching in the maple tree out front and diving to pick up peanuts we toss out.
Yesterday, our kid placed peanuts on a porch railing and set up his phone cam to shoot video of the thieves in action. No sooner had he stepped inside and the nuts were gone! Here is that video.

Yesterday, our kid placed peanuts on a porch railing and set up his phone cam to shoot video of the thieves in action. No sooner had he stepped inside the nuts were gone! In this video you will see two different jays fly off with their treats.

NeadReport,
@NeadReport@vivaldi.net avatar

@quixote Jays can already carry more than one (unshelled) nut!
"Blue Jays carry food in their throat and upper esophagus—an area often called a "gular pouch." They may store 2-3 acorns in the pouch, another one in their mouth, and one more in the tip of the bill. In this way they can carry off 5 acorns at a time to store for later feeding." https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Blue_Jay/lifehistory

NeadReport,
@NeadReport@vivaldi.net avatar

@quixote Jays will also 'weigh' a shelled peanut by picking it up and shaking it. They may opt for a heavier one if more are available.

How can "what is your pet's name?" be considered a valid security question for authentication purposes?

NeadReport,
@NeadReport@vivaldi.net avatar

@davew @nzakas Good suggestions for using password for security questions (which should be abolished). This all comes down to using a secure password management app - and using pass phrases* - which are harder to crack over time.
*Yes, I'll put my nonsensical 4-5 word passphrase up against your alpha numeric password any day.
