NPR sneaking in some nice puns and descriptions into this Red Lobster bankruptcy article. I'll just cut to the chase...

  1. Red Lobster, now the largest seafood chain, did not get cooked just recently.
  2. And during this cultural shift, Red Lobster's finances have floundered.

Nice work, NPR.

More specifically, nice work Alina Selyukh, who sadly I could not find here on Mastodon. Maybe @NPR can guide her here. Or @csymrl can give her a gentle nudge.

I took this picture while passing through a parking lot on my lunch today. This is a severe workplace OSHA infraction. This worker is not wearing any fall protection. He was the only person working on this structure at the time of this photo (there were two workers in the parking lot on a lunch break.)
He appeared to be installing some metal flashing along the edge.

In the photo you can see how extremely dangerous his situation is if...

  1. you have an idea how wide an I-beam is, and
  2. you can see that his right foot is at the very edge of the upright beam - it's only as wide as his shoe.
  3. one miss-step, a gust of wind, a distraction, slipping or losing balance while installing material, etc., and he falls to his death.*
  4. you know that falling from a height of 4ft or more, can cause serious injury and even death.

*Falls is the #1 work-related injury in the U.S. according to OSHA.

Now what I need from you all is who would you like to see in a cameo role?

'The hotel hit upon the idea when it started growing food using fallen leaves, egg shells, and used coffee grounds as compost. While searching for planters to use, the general manager’s eye fell upon the large collection of left-behind, busted-ass suitcases...

It now grows eggplant, tomato, and other veggies in the suitcases. Managers say the cases are light and, so long as the wheels aren’t broken, easy to move around.'

Having established that dandelion seed heads are definitely NOT known as DANDELION CLOCKS by everyone I have a follow on question...

What DO you know them as?

Chatting to people already I have had FLUFFS (Lithuania) and WINDY PUFFS (Canada) both of which are SUPERB.

Are there any others? Will there be enough to make a World Map of Dandelion Names?! 😃

Places, names & any other trivia welcome!

In my still new-to-me Proton mail when reading newsletters, I'm getting "Image has not been loaded to protect your privacy." Anyone know to what that refers? TY.

NeadReport, (edited )
@NeadReport@vivaldi.net avatar

@MonotoneofBill Proton mail won't download images in emails to protect you and your privacy. Clicking on an image in other email clients immediately takes you to the web and you have no control over what site you might be directed to. Many of these ad images track when you open them, what browser you are using, your IP address, etc.
You can manually click on a blank placeholder in Proton and you will be asked if you want that to open in your browser. But by default they won't load to remind you of this.

It can be disabled in Proton Mail Settings (see attached)

NeadReport,
@NeadReport@vivaldi.net avatar

@MonotoneofBill Oh, and you can load 'remote content' that is scrubbed for your privacy by selecting that button at the top of your email.

This is about an hour away from my farm, so this'll be a fun conversation, and yet another great opportunity to tell a lot of people about what a huge problem we have with unregulated commercialization of orbit. (Also I just redid my slides for my public talk next week, this is going in!)
