My oxikit-style PSA oxygen concentrator is finished, and it looks appropriately serious. I'll start writing up part 2 of the blog post soon, and then when I finish my torch manifold, I'll be making a video for the YouTube channel.

Here’s one for the photographers: Anyone else noticed this ‘target’ pattern in their aurora pictures? I had seen it once before in an aurora pic from Iceland a few years ago, and this pic is a central crop of one from last weekend - noise rejection off. Anyway, I did some reading and this is an optical interference pattern called Newton’s Rings, and it’s quite common in aurora pictures, because the light is monochromatic (single colour/wavelength). (Contd)

@shaungdavey oh, you're accidentally doing interferometry on your lens elements, lol. The monochromatic light is temporally coherent, so it self-interferes even at relatively long distances 👍

A friend told me they had a dream that Bryan Johnson (the tech billionaire who seems to be transitioning into a woman in his quest to stay young forever) was raffling off packages of the food he eats to remain youthful and my friend won one of them.

When my friend got the food, it came in a minimalist plastic pouch like tuna would come in, except the label said it was human meat. My friend said they decided to try it in their dream.

Cool organic generative art. A random color is chosen, then painted at a pixel with neighbors with the closest average. Simulated on a Fibonacci 1024. Inspired by "Rainbow Smoke"
More details: https://forum.electromage.com/t/challenge-idea-all-the-colors-rainbow-smoke/3531/10?u=wizard

A large disc of LEDs with colorful patterns is painted a pixel at a time to generate interesting groupings of color.

North,
@North@chaos.social avatar

@wizard This is awesome. If there are multiple candidate positions does it choose randomly, does it score based on multiple neighbors, or is there some other clever way to avoid ties?

@wizard Nice, that's slick

Far SWVa, just barely visible green and pink glow on the northern horizon. No ribbons of light, nothing spectacular in person, but night mode on the phone captured these at about 130am

For reference, I took this photo to the west at the same time in the same mode to convince myself that my eyes weren't playing tricks. No colors that way.

A few more grainy aurora phone pix from my front porch in Southern Virginia. Again, it looked nothing like this in person. It's extremely faint, but it is visible.

I just found out about a local plant shop whose owners have become completely deranged with fears about the Chinese Communist Party, and several yelp reviews of their store tell sales of being thrown out because the owners became suspicious that they were spies.

I want to make up shirts that say "C.C.P. -- California Commission on Plants" and go in there with a friend and start measuring their plants with calipers and taking notes in a notebook

@thomasfuchs How satisfying would it be to just punt one like a football, though

North,
@North@chaos.social avatar

@thomasfuchs Also it's just dumb. Cameras cost basically nothing nowadays, putting one on wheels a few inches off the floor is worse and more expensive than just putting stationary cameras everywhere. So what is it for? Is it so Amazon can collect spatial data? Is it a pilot for a larger platform? Is it some engineer's pet project? It's so frustrating, because at best it's landfill and at worst it's a harbinger.

For a long time I didn't ask anyone for help with my panic attacks. I more or less told my GP what to prescribe, I developed my own coping techniques, and I isolated when it got too hard.

Unfortunately, the experience of asking for help has felt more or less like finally pulling the fire alarm and the lever comes off in your hand.

If anyone has a few million$$ hanging around, you could make a brief splash by starting "Bandcamp for Generative AI"

Set up a service that lets artists form collectives that can train a model together and also includes a marketplace that allows users to prompt these models in exchange for a fee that goes to the artists who trained it.

Ideally, the actual GPUs that your GANs are running on are being powered by solar or wind only.

North,
@North@chaos.social avatar

Provide several disbursement models for the "collectives" like "artists are compensated according to their contribution of training material" or "artists are compensated even-split across the collective" etc.

Save the training data, or hash it, so that you can use it to investigate claims from other artists if they recognize their influence in the output of a model, to discourage theft.

North,
@North@chaos.social avatar

When you build this platform, it will be bad and people will not like it. You probably won't make money because of the cost of IP enforcement, conflict mediation, green energy infrastructure for the service core, etc.

But that's what you will have to do to make the use of generative AI feel acceptable in my mind.

I'm listening to a podcast where they're talking about childhood experiences with videogames and it compelled me to share my favorite videogame memories as a kid:

  1. Staying up past bedtime taking turns playing Super Mario 3 on the NES with my dad and my little brother

  2. One of the highlights of my young life: catching my mom playing PilotWings64 by herself in the living room

how are folks feeling about the use of ? when is it ok to use? when is it not? what are some examples you've seen of the wrong call being made? would love to get a ton of folks' opinions so please for reach! ✨💗✨

North,
@North@chaos.social avatar

@ishotjr I think the technology is fine, but there are no ethical generative AI services currently available.

The only ethical model I can imagine is if a model were trained by an artist collective and then the output was sold by those artists or the model was licensed by those artists.

That said, this conversation is a rare privilege. We've already been saddled with a lot of practically unavoidable unethical infrastructure and everyone has to draw their own line on what's acceptable.
