Finished! BOREAS DANCES ON TABLE ROCKS, 19x13”, pearlescent watercolor on handmade black paper. Depicting the May 10, 2024 solar storm over Upper and Lower Table Rocks in southern Oregon. What a night! (BOREAS, the Greek god of the north wind, is what the aurora borealis are named for.)

A painting on black paper of the aurora borealis as seen over Upper and Lower Table Rocks in southern Oregon near White City. The left side shows a dimly illuminated rock formation with steep sides and a very flat top, over which a crescent moon hangs low. On the right is a less defined rock formation with a more gradual profile on the sides and a broad top. The sky is painted in streamers of pinks and purples, with a green glow showing on the lower right side of the sky. Many shimmering paint colors are used to add to the effect. Paint palettes, brushes and pens are seen surrounding the painting.

Here’s one for the photographers: Anyone else noticed this ‘target’ pattern in their aurora pictures? I had seen it once before in an aurora pic from Iceland a few years ago, and this pic is a central crop of one from last weekend - noise rejection off. Anyway, I did some reading and this is an optical interference pattern called Newton’s Rings, and it’s quite common in aurora pictures, because the light is monochromatic (single colour/wavelength). Did you miss the Northern Lights on May 10th? Don't worry! Not your only chance!!

Dazzling auroras are just a warm-up as more solar storms are likely, scientists say

Not as brightly colored as some of my other aurora photos from Friday, but I liked the mood and composition of this one.

We did manage to get a couple of pics from Saturday evening in Red Bluff, CA. The show lasted but maybe 30-40 minutes. Not nearly as long as Friday. But it was still exciting.

Green & Glass (2024)

This will be the only image of the Aurora that makes my website I think. I specifically planned with a group of friends to meet at this location with hopes of getting the best images we could locally. I definitely think I did well. Extremely pleased with the results!

Many folks in the fediverse saw and photographed the extraordinary auroras over the weekend (it was a joy to log in and track the lights as they progressed around the world). In case you missed them, here's a @Flipboard Storyboard from CNN with a collection of images, including shots from Christchurch in New Zealand, Ormont-Dessous in Switzerland and Lake Berryessa in California. Our favorite photo? An incredible shot of a windmill in Aarlanderveen, the Netherlands.

Outside of GPS on certain tractors that impacted farming (at least here in North American), were there other #auroraborealis impacts to our technological world? Other than the slightly increased load to social media involving #aurora posts? Curious...

The solar storm that brought the auroras to many parts of the world this weekend also broke vital GPS and precision farming functionality in tractors and agricultural equipment during a critical point of the planting season, reports @404mediaco.

One chain of John Deere dealerships even warned farmers that the accuracy of some of the systems used by tractors had been “extremely compromised,” and that farmers who planted crops during periods of inaccuracy would face problems when they go to harvest.

The outages have highlighted the vulnerability of modern tractors to satellite disruption, and the threat this places on our food supply — something experts have been warning about for years. Here’s more.

Spectacoolar.

On the way back I suddenly saw the full spectrum too, not just with my cam. Most likely because the spot was deeper in the valley and blocked the city lights.

Image uploads for Mastodon servers seem to be really intolerant for packet loss, which was plenty from where I was over the weekend.
