There are many people who can't afford to take days off work even when they are ill. The CDC should be recommending that employers give workers paid sick leave, not making it easier for bosses to exploit workers by saying it's fine to work when you are sick.

PieterPeach,
@PieterPeach@mastodon.social avatar

@luckytran While more sick leave is absolutely necessary for many industries, the long term reality is that people will not be able to take enough sick leave to cover the entire infectious period of all the various circulating communicable diseases. We need a cultural shift towards wearing well fitting masks for the infectious period when well enough to work. Eg this example from Ontario Ministry of Health

PieterPeach,
@PieterPeach@mastodon.social avatar

@jinnijoon @luckytran absolutely, which is why we need an approach that not only includes masking, but also encompasses WFH where possible, reducing buildup of infectious respiratory aerosols in shared indoor spaces (https://cleanairstars.com/steps) @cleanairstars

I deeply respect my IPAC colleagues that defer to experts in respiratory protection, OH&S, and environmental controls when tasked with developing policy for viruses like SARS-CoV-2.
Some even go out of their way to bridge their own knowledge gaps as most have had little or no training in these areas prior to pandemic (neither did anaesthetists)

I saw a TikTok recommending putting olive oil in cappuccino. I love olive oil and I love cappuccino, so I was super excited to try it. Can't get over how well it did not work. Somehow combining two things I like turned into undrinkable coffee.

@malwaretech try sweetening coffee with honey and you will soon discover why it’s surprisingly not a thing.

There are treatable respiratory tract infections like circulating in children at the moment. While it's tempting to assume everything is a self-limiting viral illness, seeking a professional opinion from your family doctor if you are concerned or they are not getting better is worth considering.

Here is a fact sheet from the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne on what to do if your child has a cough

or fever

“What is WikiChat?
#LLM chatbots like #ChatGPT are great tools for quick access to knowledge. But they get things wrong a lot, especially if the information you are looking for is recent or about less popular topics.
WikiChat uses an LLM as its backbone, but it makes sure the information it provides comes from a reliable source like #Wikipedia, so that its responses are more factual.”

I think a few of you on here use #ChatGPT #AI of some description. Is there a client for #iOS that’s completely free? Intrigued by the #tech but not that much that I want to fork out for it #cheapskate

@lastwordonsport Poe.com has an iOS with a variety of LLMs to use for free.

Asking symptomatic patients to wear masks in general practice is a great and sustainable path forward. Hopefully this behaviour sticks.

PieterPeach,
@PieterPeach@mastodon.social avatar

@DavidPenington that would be ideal, but for source control in non-expert general population who are also potentially in some respiratory discomfort we need something that people will reliably wear. Head straps don’t work for everyone. This was my son wearing a KN94 with cord locks that worked very well and something that would work with a majority of adults to greatly reduce aerosol emissions.
