Having worn nothing but the 3M 1870+ (left photo) for respiratory protection at work since it became widely available in Australia I’ve forgotten what it’s like wearing others. Today I wore a flat fold model (right photo) & realised why the work of breathing is so much higher in many of these models. It’s not necessarily the pressure drop over the filter media, but also the surface area available for filtering as most of the media can be flush to the skin (on my face)

This part of the message should be emphasised.
We need a cultural shift where we take steps to reduce risk to those around us when we’re unable to work from home when sick.
COVID-19 isn’t the only communicable disease for which wearing a when :

  1. sick or
  2. a close contact of someone unwell at home

may help reduce transmission.

"bloodborne"

"Of the 20 bloodborne pathogens known to cause diseases such as malaria, syphilis, and hemorrhagic fever, there are three; hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that are the most common pathogens of concern. These three viruses account for the majority of occupationally-acquired infections and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality."

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34033323/

PieterPeach,
@PieterPeach@mastodon.social avatar

@jmcrookston There is no epidemiological evidence I’m aware of to suggest that HIV is transmitted via aerosols. It would have been a very different 40 years with different patterns of transmission if that were the case

PieterPeach,
@PieterPeach@mastodon.social avatar

@jmcrookston most HIV infections can be traced to an event or frequent higher risk behaviour. Unexplained infections are uncommon.

PieterPeach,
@PieterPeach@mastodon.social avatar

@jmcrookston I have dealt with many HIV patients. There is usually a clearly identifiable event or high risk behaviour they can point to.

PieterPeach,
@PieterPeach@mastodon.social avatar

@jmcrookston Where is airborne transmission shown in animals and for what retrovirus? There is quite a bit of difference between the various retroviruses.

Getting close to the ideal disposable for source control in (my) children. A modified KF94 with cord locks to help secure it more firmly plus contoured nose bridge pads to reduce reliance on an adequately bent nose wire.

Contoured foam nose bridge pads https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08ZDGBMK3?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

@masknerd that, and even just a thin foam pad would be a big improvement. The gap around the nose is the biggest weakness of this otherwise amazing mask. Noticed they use your YouTube video review on their website 😂
