For the next 6 weeks I'm meeting with Kris Brown, Nate Osgood, Xiaoyan Li, William Waites and Evan Patterson to design software for epidemiological modeling. And we're meeting in Maxwell's childhood home in Edinburgh! It's been made into a little museum, and this plaque is inside.

It sets a high standard for what counts as doing good science. And the coffee packets in the kitchen are all the same brand: Maxwell House.

I am so jealous.
My physics prof told us that Maxwell actually wrote down his equations after an argument with his wife, while staying on the couch at a friend's house! I'm not sure he's correct, but it was a good story 😁

    Myth: academics make bank flying around giving talks.

    Reality: prestigious university invites me out. I fly across the country and speak free. I front the cost and submit for reimbursement. First they lose the paperwork. Then they reject it because of a digital signatures. Now, six months later, they reject it again, because the receipt does not show the last four digits of my credit card so they don’t know if I actually bought the ticket.

    They heard me talk. How did they think I got there?

    Dubious superpowers. Pick one.

    A. Sleep like a cuckoo bee. Simply bite on to a branch or parapet of a building & get a solid seven hours in all weather & conditions.

    B. Live on nectar. Feel fully energized & get excellent nutrition on a diet of nothing but sugared drinks.

    C. Diapause your life. Slow down aging, & metabolism at will during the winter months. You could sleep for days & eat very little with no ill effects.

    D. Powerful sting. Sting people you don't like. Boy will it hurt 'em!

    My biggest problem with is that it forces everyone to make earning money their primary objective.

    Not to provide valuable services for society.
    Not to make sure that people don't suffer.
    Not to preserve our environment.

    All these things are just optional side effects to the main objective of making money, and will be easily discarded if doing the opposite turns out to be more lucrative.
