I've seen a number of reaction videos for The Terminator and one nearly-universal comment is: "Wait, you could just look up anybody in the phone book?! It just had everybody's full address?!"

The past is not worth being nostalgic for. It was pretty fucked up in a lot of ways.

I recall in the late '80s, reports started coming out saying that Gen Xers were going to be the first generation of Americans that statistically were not likely to do better than their parents. That they had a 50/50 chance at best. My father expressed concern at the time because he had two boys that fell pretty squarely in that age bracket. I certainly didn't understand what went into the reports at the time, but the headline version caught my attention for the same reason.

As we got into the '90s, I started seeing studies that said, "Yup, Gen Xers who are going out into the workforce now are not doing as well as their parents were at the same age." Further, these studies started to suggest Millennials would probably be worse off still. And, sure enough, we started getting into the late '90s and early 2000s, and reports were saying, "We crunched the numbers & statistically Millennials will definitely do worse than their parents."

The mainstream news reports on all these had headlines like "Death of the American Dream?" and "The American Dream No More?" with the question marks removed for the Millennial-centered ones. So sitting here in 2024, with literally decades of evidence showing that all those reports were pretty much spot on, I don't understand how/why people still talk and act like the American Dream is still a thing.

We're not even talking about making it big. We're not talking about rags to riches stories. We're talking about how, if you were born after about 1980, you will statistically not even do as well as your parents. It's not about achieving success any more; it's about mitigating failure. You "win" by not losing more than your peers.

@glennf It was expertly done. Expertly written and Gibson did a phenomenal job. I learned after watching that it was the first one Gibson filmed too.

How much alone time vs socializing do you need?

For me there are a few people who are usually equalizing, and I can just be around them, so I won't count that. But generally, I find about 3 times a week, I'm game for socializing. A day in between to rest is usually nice, but the larger the gathering or if we go somewhere particularly noisy or I'm meeting new people that involves more effort, and my social battery empties sooner. I'm very curious where everyone else falls on this!

@RickiTarr The last time I went out in any capacity was at the start of May when my wife & I went on vacation. There was a party at one of the places we ate at, but we left without talking to anyone. Aside from dealing with the vet, various cashiers, etc, the last socializing I did before that was January 3 when I went out to lunch with a friend.

@glennf Definitely more development time spent ensuring Season 1 made sense and all the pieces tied together neatly. Season 2 did have the best single line of the entire show, though!

Reading up on electric fences to keep bears out of the yard, as you do. So far, I haven’t found anything that would keep bears out that wouldn’t hurt the dogs.

Seinfeld/The Simpsons writer Tom Gammill is also a Nancy super fan who owns the largest private collection of original Nancy art. He wrote a 75-minute play about Ernie Bushmiller in which he played the role and Billy Ireland Cartoon Museum curator Caitlin McGurk played all the other roles. Amazing!

@ajroach42 He had a minor role in Rudy Ray Moore's The Human Tornado. When I first saw it, I didn't recognize him at all except by his voice.

@gwynnion Holy crap -- that interview is batshit insane! At almost every question, he says "I'm right, you're wrong" and then only backs that up with nothing more concrete than "Because I said so!" He doesn't sound like a professional strategist, he sounds like a 12-year-old that's mad he didn't get an "A" on his homework!

Mom, trying to show she's interested in my life: "I saw on your blog you mentioned drinking coffee. That's new, when did you start that?"

Me, annoyed that she hasn't actually paid any real attention since I was in high school in the '80s: "Been doing that since the '90s since offices let you drink coffee for free but you had to buy your own soda. What did you think I was drinking any time I mentioned going to Starbucks. I'VE HAD COFFEE FROM YOUR KURIG!"

I swear she's never left 1987.

It sounds like a minor point & ultimately it is. But I realized a while back her driving factor for much of what of what she doss is to be seen as a "good mother" & a "good wife." Not necessarily to actually be either of those but to be PERCEIVED as such. It's the foundation of her self-image & she reaches out periodically with these notes to demonstrate that TO OTHERS.

So I wind up seeing disconnects like this where she brings up something "new" about her own son that is in fact decades old.

Admittedly, I'm not any kind of coffee connoisseur and I don't talk about it a lot. But I have mentioned going to Starbucks on more than a few occasions and I've literally stood in her kitchen and used her Kurig in front of her.

But, as I said, her mental image of me hasn't changed in 30+ years. I get she's trying to reach out & connect in a way she hasn't been able to for decades, but doing so by openly demonstrating how she hasn't paid attention for that whole time isn't a good approach.

Got a co-worker in his mid-30s. Nice guy, affable; talented, does his job well, knows his stuff. He and his gf are expecting their first child later this year, and they're hoping to buy a house in my town. (His gf grew up here apparently.)

I'm kind of sitting back, awestruck. Actively trying to have kids and buy a house in 2024? I can't imagine!

I distinctly recall telling my folks back in the early '80s that I thought the world was too chaotic and awful to want to try to have kids in. I didn't want to bring someone into the world going so horribly down the drain; that seemed like a disservice to them to knowingly do that. The past 30-40 years have only exasperated all the problems I was seeing then; I can't imagine wanting to bring a child into this mess of a world today.

@RickiTarr Dream trip would be taking off in an RV with my wife and never stopping. It's pretty obviously less about the trip itself and more about the lack of responsibility it implies.
