For context this is from a discussion I was having and I couldn't come up with an answer.

If you were say, trying to get into the dating game or wanted to meet new friends.

would you disclose before hand or early on that you were autistic? (I count Self-DX but I do realize that could change the conversation)

Like I do realize allistic people can (Subconsciously) be jerks to autistic people if they perceive a difference, and I'm wondering if that would be worse if they outright KNEW you were autistic.

Please give me some input this question is eating me up inside lol

StevenSaus,

@lapis

Also, I go with something I learned from Dan Savage about disclosing something "odd" or "unfavorable" about yourself while dating: You disclose one thing about you; their reaction tells you everything about them.

(Also, if you're not aware, @actuallyautistic and @actuallyaudhd and others may be of help here too)

So, a question for undiagnosed late realised @actuallyautistic folks.
Your work makes a change and it saves them money but plays actual havoc with all of your traits that you're still learning to recognise as autistic. You tell them about the impact it has on you and they completely dismiss your complaint, saying its fine for most people.
If there was a diagnosis it'd basically be indirect discrimination. But there isn't, and no prospect of one any time soon.
What do you do?

StevenSaus,

That is not just you.

Worth noting (to myself at least) this same pattern has repeated outside of work as well.

Oh, surprise surprise: Standardized tests don't actually measure either school quality or student ability.

They measure affluence and social class (in effect).

This Healio article seems to indicate that propranolol -- a blood pressure drug -- may be useful in reducing anxiety (and other "symptoms", grrrrr) among autists, though they're primarily looking at children.

Any adult autistic folx taking this medication for blood pressure? Can you speak to your experiences with it?

Okay, for some reason I'm missing a lot of (but not all) user avatars for remote users. I'm fairly sure I'm not instance blocked or otherwise running into problems there, but I'm not sure where I messed things up or how to rectify it. Any advice from would be great!

Okay, today/yesterday was definitely my second (recognized in near-real-time) episode of what I can only describe as dysregulation and/or rejection sensitive dysphoria. Not helped by my "brain weasels" technique, since it turned out one of them was (sort of, in a minor way) true.

So HOURS of just ... white noise and screaming in my head. Even though the ACTUAL issue was resolved in like, five minutes. And still palpably dysregulated hours and hours after it was resolved.

StevenSaus,

Had someone ghost on me after (I think) I overshared/unmasked with them last month, and I'm so (irrationally, stupidly) nervous that having seen me react like this now, I'll get pushed away, at least somewhat.

I don't think that will be the case, not rationally, but rationality isn't really what we're looking at here, is it?

StevenSaus,

I'm fucking FIFTY. At least I know why I'm having meltdowns instead of only thinking I'm ... defective ... but it still feels like I should have my shit together better than this.

All it takes for fascism to continue is enough "respected" and "moderate" and "centrist" people to give fascists "the benefit of the doubt," even well after the fascists have stopped pretending to be anything but.

If you have not yet read Fern Brady's memoir "Strong Female Character," do so. it will be a hard emotional read -- Fern shares her experiences as an woman -- but it's also good and honest and no bullshit from a very very smart comedian. Cannot recommend enough.

How do you tell the difference between reactions you have because you're neurospicy and the reactions you have from past trauma? (Let alone where they overlap!)

(I'm talking more behavioral than sensory here, things akin to rejection sensitivity, etc)

StevenSaus, to advice

This is particularly relevant to neurospicy folx. Just "do it harder" is useless advice to us. We have to give ourselves grace and then control our environment. But first we have to stop blaming ourselves.

You are doing the best you can right now, with your situation the way it is.

I wrote this about my experiences; I am hoping that this resonates and/or broadens the discussion.

Autistic masking is one of those things that regularly gets misunderstood. People will accuse autistic people of "pretending" or some other verb with a wide range of negative connotations.

That misunderstanding goes away when people learn more about what masking really is… but I think there’s an aspect that often gets overlooked.

Oh, this makes my brain sparkly!

Addendum: Perhaps this integrates/intersects with the common notion that humans "pack bond" with "anything."

Or even how we tend to view relationships as non-status related, leading to, say, "I value this animal over that human (animal)."

(I am perhaps taking it as given that many human animals are not inherently more important than non-human ones.)

NOTE: Spitting hypotheses to test! NON-CANON, lol!
