  • Only a single new car model under $20k in the US.
  • Average new car at $48000, average used at $27000, both up 30% since 2019
  • Record loan deliquencies due to high prices & interest rates despite low unemployment rates

In other words a record number of debt slaves who can't afford their cars despite working full time jobs. What👏a👏system👏

Edit (check my profile for more up-to-date info)

If you are still a CuriosityStream subscriber, be aware that they are currently mass-emailing subscribers with what I think is a VERY deceptive "offer". They push users to renew 2yr subs, promising continued Nebula access for bundle subscribers. In reality, Nebula access for CS subscribers expires on Dec 31st. This means you'll have <2 months of Nebula out of your "locked in" 2 year contract. All their communication seems to imply the opposite.

Every time I mentioned a Fairphone in a Friday Checkout we got great views. Clearly there is a lot of interest, so I got a review unit. What would you like to know about either the phone or the company behind it?

Weird to see not a single post about Russia's active civil war on my Mastodon. Sadly have to stick to Twitter for current events for now :/

Gotta say, Mastodon slowly went from a bearable replacement to Twitter to a fairly competent one for me. A slow tricke of accounts to follow and new followers makes the platform feel much more alive now. I still find discovery way too slow and difficult, but I'm starting to feel at home here 🏡

I tried Cowboy's new high-end bikes called the Cross
✅ Great suspension in the front & seat + fat wheels make the ride smooth as butter
✅ 50% longer lasting battery, still removable
✅ Better, integrated rear rack & light
✅ Still by far my favorite app, motor control & design
❌ 26kg!
❌ 3499 EUR starting price!

It's like the SUV of bikes. More info in The Friday Checkout.

My working theory is that people tend to think the "good" version of Windows is the N-1 one from today's

I keep hearing from a very loud group of people that "nobody wants foldables" and yet every statistic I see says the exact opposite

My video on the Fediverse is now live on YouTube as well!

A new internet is forming (& Meta wants to control it)

Is something wrong with my eyes or is this logo is extremely ugly and hard to read?

  • I thought the F was a weird T
  • I hate that the dots horizontally and vertically are differently spaced
  • The orange tone is as cheap as colors get

I'm doubting myself because design is the one thing Nothing probably does best so I'm confused...

I use this browser extension called Unhook on YouTube when I need to get things done and it lets me block all recommended feeds while leaving subscriptions & search functional. It has really helped me not waste hours on rabbit holes when I don't want to

"Twitter Blue subscribers can now hide their checkmarks"

Elon managed to take the once-coveted blue check and turned it into something that's embarrassing enough to warrant wanting to hide it 😂

So many of the new Windows laptops have MicroSD slots and I can't for the life of me figure out why. Full Size SD? I get it and I want it! Anyone with a large camera will probably want that. But who still uses MicroSD these days? Barely any phones have MicroSD slots anymore. What am I missing?

Also, vote on your preference

Much worse than celcius vs. fahrenheit and metric vs. imperial is the fact that we still couldn't agree on a standard date format across the world and I have absolutely no way of knowing whether 04.07 means the 4th of July or the 7th of April.

I have an annoying thing on my MacBook where video seems to be jumping back and forth in brightness/saturation. Feels like HDR is being turned on and off every few seconds depending on what is on screen. A quick Google search led me nowhere. Does anyone know what my issue is and how to fix it?

Things I've checked that haven't worked:
❌ True tone
❌ Auto-brightness

Would be really embarassed right now if I had Dbrand as a sponsor. I get brands wanting to be edgy, but racist name jokes being your brand are a yikes

Weirdly enough, my Mastodon feed (following 92 accounts) is more lively than my Threads one (following 100) and I also get more actual interactions in the form of comments here. The one thing Threads is leading in is likes, but that does little beyond boosting my ego. I follow multiple accounts who are on both but only post on Mastodon. Obviously a sample size of 1, but I'm happy to see how active the community is here even if it's technically smaller

If you could ask anything about the fediverse, ActivityPub, Mastodon, Threads, etc., what would it be? Let me know and I will try to include some in the video 👇

The circle to search feature on the S24 series works so unreasonably well. Took this random 50x zoom photo, did a quick circle and right away got an answer.

This feature in particular uses Google for the actual searching, but even the completely self-developed Galaxy AI features worked surprisingly well. More thoughts in the Friday Checkout

PSA part 2:

We finally got an official statement about the CuriosityStream / Nebula bundle. This statement is slightly different from what I said based on earlier info I had, so please read for details:

If regulators actually pass mandatory automatic power cuts & speed limiters for e-bikes before they do so for the 2 ton metal boxes that actually kill 90%+ of the people in traffic I will start a riot

My goal when starting The Friday Checkout was that each episode should reach at least 50k views.

We now almost always hit 100k and more and more often 200k, 300k and more. Best of all, a good chunk of these are not "viral" views, but views coming from a solid core audience that has made it their weekly habit to tune in every Friday. So happy with my second baby 🥹
