If regulators actually pass mandatory automatic power cuts & speed limiters for e-bikes before they do so for the 2 ton metal boxes that actually kill 90%+ of the people in traffic I will start a riot

Absolutely insane story of a Ukranian girl getting her face cloned & deepfaked into dozens of pro-Russian digital influencers on Chinese social media.

I fear this flood of AI shit is truly going to break the internet

  • Only a single new car model under $20k in the US.
  • Average new car at $48000, average used at $27000, both up 30% since 2019
  • Record loan deliquencies due to high prices & interest rates despite low unemployment rates

In other words a record number of debt slaves who can't afford their cars despite working full time jobs. What👏a👏system👏

Edit (check my profile for more up-to-date info)

If you are still a CuriosityStream subscriber, be aware that they are currently mass-emailing subscribers with what I think is a VERY deceptive "offer". They push users to renew 2yr subs, promising continued Nebula access for bundle subscribers. In reality, Nebula access for CS subscribers expires on Dec 31st. This means you'll have <2 months of Nebula out of your "locked in" 2 year contract. All their communication seems to imply the opposite.

Since many people here care about the fediverse, I thought I'd give you a summary of how my video on the topic performed so far & some thoughts.

Let's start with views & audience on YouTube:

  • So far 106k views, which is below average (8/10) & now tapering off.
  • Audience is skewing slightly more male, older & less USA-focused than my channel average (1st shot is the fediverse video, 2nd screenshot is channel average)

"Twitter Blue subscribers can now hide their checkmarks"

Elon managed to take the once-coveted blue check and turned it into something that's embarrassing enough to warrant wanting to hide it 😂

Are you a software developer who has built AI/ML apps or features running on-device (e.g. on a phone or computer)?

If yes, I'd love to talk to you for my upcoming video! Just comment below :)

So happy to see that this display video cracked a million views already. It's now my third deeper technical explainer (displays, batteries, chips) and all three have performed well. These take a TON of time to research and with the display one I even commissioned custom 3D animations, did microscope shots, etc. so it took forever to make. I was initially worried if I'd ever even make back the money on it, but seeing this trend, I think I'll make more!

If you're in Berlin and want one of the most exciting bike infrastructure projects to become a reality then check out https://radbahn.berlin

Basically a 9km protected bike lane across the city under the U1/U3. The website has the details and if you have some time, fill out the survey (should be option 3 on the home page). I've tried the pilot track and it's lovely!

I use this browser extension called Unhook on YouTube when I need to get things done and it lets me block all recommended feeds while leaving subscriptions & search functional. It has really helped me not waste hours on rabbit holes when I don't want to

Travelled 1200 km today. S-Bahn - regular train (ICE) - U-Bahn, then a 6 hour event in Munich, then the same thing in reverse. Door to door in less than 5 hours both ways, all without flying. Feels a bit magical!

Europe is having a tough time with EVs, but I'm surprised to see how strong we are with e-bikes. From my beloved Cowboy to Vanmoof, Rose, Canyon, Riese & Müller, Veloretti, Urban Arrow, Lemmo and so many more, I would argue that almost all the really good brands are European. I guess it's a combination of a strong existing high-end bike industry that is comfortable with making expensive bikes + the fact that commuting on bikes here is a lifestyle, so people just "get it".

This video blew my mind. The official Microsoft YouTube channel unironically recommends that you make ChatGPT write all your job applications because "personalized emails are important to stand out", but "now you can do them at 10x speed".

Surely they realize that literally the only thing that makes "personalized messages" valuable is that you know someone took the time to write them and that if everyone makes AI do theirs we are just back to square one, no?

The fact that you search for a YouTube channel's name and the FIRST video result is NOT one from that channel, but a random unrelated recommendation is insane. It breaks the definition of "search"

While I recently tested the Vision Pro, my next video will actually be all about the tech behind "real" see-through AR glasses & why we have to opt for VR headsets emulating reality instead of those. Stay tuned!

Sadly the battery of my Lumia 950 seems to have died while sitting in a box. Does anyone happen to have any working Windows phones I could borrow for a video near Berlin?

Fairphone sent me the Fairbuds to test about a week ago. My thoughts:

✅ Replaceable battery in both the buds & the case!
✅ Active noise canceling & decent sound quality (to me, not an audiophile)
✅ 149 eur, not bad
❌ Buds & case both quite bulky
❌ Almost symmetrical design means I never know which way is R/L, or up/down
❌ BT range seems a bit lower than usual

More about this later

I was very bullish about the Vision Pro originally, but I now think I was wrong. I thought Apple with its insane R&D budgets, existing iPad & Mac app platforms, M series chips, iPhone tie-ins & the ability to sell a $3500 device was the only company that could make the "perfect" headset, with no concerns for money. But after seeing all the reviews, like this fantastic one from The Verge, I now think that even this wasn't enough.

I think Apple is intentionally not showing VR games, etc. on their headset, because they want this to be a main new computing platform, not just a side-product, like the current VR headsets. But I'm not convinced that they have shown any real killer app or use case to get us there, and even if they bring the price down to $1000 in a few years I'm not sure that will change things either.
