    If only others would "check up" on unfamiliar sources to test or confirm motive, as you did me after my comment! Social media would be a much safer and saner place, I think.

    I got followed today by another account that was (to me) clearly fake, but 183 others had been duped into following it. This has been happening much more routinely at "that other social network" for some months now, and increasing. Soon it won't be practical to merely let that account senesce gracefully.

    One need look no further than the simple existence of the MAGA movement as evidence of a caste system in the United States, one that may favor the exploitation of race but doesn't shy away from exploiting any skin color that happens to fall within its crosshairs. Racism is merely one result of classism and caste, but not the only one.

    No, it's exactly the opposite of a party FOR THE TREES: it's a desperate tactic to reduce their caloric expenditure and level of activity in an attempt to survive in an environment that is hostile to their existence for months at a time. It's foliar hibernation comparable the hibernation of animals, executed for the same reason.

    I find it offensive to mischaracterize this for selfish emotional benefit of humans.

    VulcanTourist,

    @evelynefoerster

    > They have been doing this since existing...

    Well, no. The very fact that it's an adaptation makes obvious that their existence at one point was not threatened by a climate extreme. The continents changed, glaciers came and went, ocean currents shifted, and everything had to adapt. But when they first came into being it was because conditions were ideal for their existence.

    VulcanTourist,

    Example: AUTISM.

    At worst in aggregate it's neutral to survival, which is why it's persisted for millennia. It's not just neutral to survival, though; it confers considerable strengths in its best per-mutations.

    None of which really relates to my original observation and complaint. I never favor emotions, much less human emotion, in descriptions like that. It wasn't being terribly honest, even though I understand the good intent. I dislike being manipulated to feel good.

    ✨ It’s true. I’ve been working on this blog post for ten years.

    You see, I’ve been slowly buying up nearly seventy super rare issues of a 80s/90s gadget catalog that meant the world to me growing up. And in the process, I’ve uncovered the secret history of this lost copywriting art.

    PLUS, as a bonus, I’ve scanned every single issue — so you can read them all.

    I hope you enjoy: https://cabel.com/2023/11/06/dak-and-the-golden-age-of-gadget-catalogs/

    Speaker Mike Johnson claims he hasn’t had a qualifying bank account or financial asset to disclose since 2016. That would seem rather incredible, given that he has a mortgage and is in the top 12 percent of income earners. His excuse? “I am a man of modest means.” Sorry, no. That’s not an answer, Mike. Where did all the funds go?

    In spite of their fame and success, I think I still have license to disagree with Grandin or Vermeulen. My life experience has been that it's trivially easy for me to learn new things, apparently much easier than for neurotypical people. I'm a so-called "quick study".

    I didn't exploit that in life, no more than I succeeded in exploiting any of my other strengths, but it's nevertheless true for me and contrary to what Grandin says of herself. Not a good generalization.

    VulcanTourist, (edited )
    @VulcanTourist@mastodon.social avatar

    @HistoPol @MaJ1

    When I was younger and still prone to making attempts to socialize, I had an unconscious habit of seeking out the odd and the outliers (of a sort). It seems I prefer my friends as I prefer humor: full of surprises that can catch me off guard.

    Neurotypical people generally lack the ability to do that. They're boring and predictable.

    VulcanTourist,
    @VulcanTourist@mastodon.social avatar

    @HistoPol @MaJ1

    It applies best to pragmatic things and visual and spatial challenges, perhaps. I don't know that it has any specific limits. It's reined-in somewhat by a diagnosed memory deficit that ultimately doomed me to being a jack-of-all-trades because I can't rote-memorize well enough to specialize... in ANYTHING.

    VulcanTourist,
    @VulcanTourist@mastodon.social avatar

    I suspect that I might have developed 98th-percentile fluid IQ rather than being born with it, as a result and remediation of that memory deficit, which did come factory-installed.

    You discount the value of rote memorization. It's the ONLY thing that allows people of average intelligence to function as specialists in any role, and that specialization is generally essential to occupational success in this age. Had I been born in 1501, I'd have been highly valued.

    VulcanTourist,
    @VulcanTourist@mastodon.social avatar

    @HistoPol @MaJ1

    I'm a Mensa member, n'est-ce pas? I've been "diagnosed" to have a fluid IQ that exceeds that of 98% or more of the population. The last time I was tested (WAIS-III), it was explained to me that my memory deficit affected the result and that, in the absence of that memory issue, the result would likely have been higher, so my true IQ might be greater than 98th percentile. Remember, I said that I suspect that my IQ was a compensation for poor memory, but it's affected by it.

    Ya know, if this IWT was really that perfectly descriptive of autism, I would have heard about it in the last decade. Other AuDHD people in my sphere would have mentioned it. Articles about it would have knocked on my eyelids. It would have been discussed in the autism support group. None of that happened.

    Instead, this discussion is the very first that I'm hearing of it.
