This is Stripe, a male fox, who sometimes hangs around at the rear of the garden. He's really shy and takes off if I approach. He's often lurking when Lopa is about. http://www.permuted.org.uk/photography/fox-of-the-day/

Another photo taken as the light is all but disappearing. This was at around 9.30pm as Lopa strolled around the garden upsetting the gulls that were swooping overhead. Taken at a stupid ISO 40000. Processed in http://www.permuted.org.uk/photography/fox-of-the-day/

Lopa popped by at around 9.30 tonight, just about in time to catch the very last of the failing light. This was taken with ISO 32000 and cleaned up in which does a pretty good job these days. http://www.permuted.org.uk/photography/fox-of-the-day/

As well as the foxes we have some other regular garden visitors. This male blackbird is around every day gathering grubs. The female sometimes shows up in the morning, but he seems to be doing most of the shopping for the family. There's also a very bold little robin who is in and out of the garden (possibly also collecting food for young).

Male blackbird with yellow beak and yellow eye ring standing erect on a path. His is beak full of grubs and worms.

It's several days since Lopa has been around during the day. WIndy weather and some rain has kept her away and me inside. Things improved today and she showed up late afternoon, this time with a male fox called Stripe. He's been around before but usually hides at the very rear of the garden. Nice to see them together for a change. http://www.permuted.org.uk/photography/fox-of-the-day/

I took this one a couple of weeks ago, but I felt it was time for a proper portrait of the lovely Lopa. http://www.permuted.org.uk/photography/fox-of-the-day/

This rather fine blackbird has become a regular late afternoon visitor to the garden. He's collecting grubs for a nearby nest of chicks.

More bug catching by Lopa. Hopefully she won't destroy the garden in her desire to catch everything in sight. http://www.permuted.org.uk/photography/fox-of-the-day/

Today's photo of Lopa the vixen has a nice natural feel to it. That's partly due to the messy area of the garden she was in, but I think also the lateness of the hour (9.20pm) and resultant poor light has something to do with it. http://www.permuted.org.uk/photography/fox-of-the-day/

"Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones.
But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal.
A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts, Mead said."
We are at our best when we serve others. Be civilized.

@rbos @pinskal @jai_oh Just to add that there is plenty of evidence that wildlife suffer femur breaks which then heal, so the whole premise is a little bit wrong anyway. Something like 70% of foxes that were 5yrs or older had healed breaks (data from Prof Stephen Harris - Urban Foxes 2001 edition)

@Stoat Completely. I was shocked by just how much a difference they were finding.

I haven't played since the 1970s, but had the chance of a game this week and enjoyed it so much that I'm playing again tomorrow. I was amazed how quickly the moves all came back to me. I now just have to concentrate on actually 'seeing the ball' - that will help a lot.

UK Universities Crisis

Students have occupied the vice-chancellor's office at the University of Brighton in protest at plans to cut 110 lecturers' jobs.

@MarkRubin @ucupostgrads @ucu Part of a longer and deeply disturbing strategy by the current VC which has seen her close Hastings and Eastbourne campuses, and try to consolidate in Brighton. This resulted in buying out the Virgin Sports lease to reclaim space at Falmer (part of the costs that are now resulting in redundancies) This flawed programme runs counter to founding principles of the University of Brighton which has a long tradition of wide community engagement.

UK punk band from the 70s/80s that you may not have heard. They were storming the UK underground around the time the US was experiencing The Runaways, with Joan Jett. If you like one, you’ll probably like the other.

This is Girlschool. They’re badass.

@markwyner They were definitely not any part of punk in the 70s in the UK.

Words,
@Words@vivaldi.net avatar

@markwyner No worries, but at the time these labels were really important and quite precise in their application. More so than maybe they should have been.

@markwyner I'm of an age where punk started late '75 and ended by mid '77 (absorbed by the corporate machine). Dead Kennedys and Buzzcocks were definitely always punk though. There was a tricky split between UK punk (youthful, hard, fast etc) and the more musically advanced US/NY bands eg Talking Heads, Television, Suicide (art punk?) and Patti Smith, Blondie, Ramones (pure pre-UK punk).

Garden clearing can be endless - I'm currently cutting up buddleia and elder that had gotten out of control. Upside is I get to observe the insects that enjoy the garden, including this beautiful broad-bodied chaser dragonfly.
