@benchwhistler@mastodon.scot

An Irishman living by the beach in Aberdeen, Scotland. Making some people happy, occasionally annoying others. No interest in sport or football as a surrogate for bigotry. Not a pet person. I prefer the idea that animals should live independent lives. Ideally this should also apply to the people living in Scotland.

The UK Prime Minister stood outside his official residence claiming Britain as the World's most successful multi ethnic multi faith democracy.
This overlooks the fact that England has an hereditary head of state and head of the official state religion. By law they must be an Anglican Protestant, forbidden to be, become or marry a Roman Catholic.
26 seats are reserved in Parliament exclusively for Anglican Bishops appointed on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.
Democracy, Aye Right.

After all the excitement of a jack up boat attending one of the wind turbines in Aberdeen bay you will be pleased to know that all the others are spinning gently in the afternoon sunshine, and the one that was being fixed is static. Probably still waiting for the airfix glue to harden sufficiently.

"The DUBLIN city motto, Obedientia Civium Urbis Felicitas, meaning that the obedience of the people produces a happy city, is totally out of sync with the story of the Irish capital of course, which has enjoyed scarcely five minutes of obedience in its long and varied history". Three burning castles on the coat of arms exemplifies the history of obedience within the city

@When apparently the origin is unknown. This would seem to be the perfect basis for a revamped and newly generated Coat of arms, and Motto. But that’s for the current population of Dublin to decide.

@Wen @JackTheCat One consequence of the Labour Government ignoring the electorate was that Labour got voted out at the following election, and have not been the government since then.

@Wen @JackTheCat indeed. But its said that “opposition parties do not win elections, governing parties lose them”. The consequence of the Blair led government ignoring the electorate has been 15 years out of power. The electorate have long memories.

Perfidious Albion

After the 1798 uprising Prime Minister William Pitt decided that the Irish Parliament in Dublin & Ireland’s independence should be abolished.

The British secret service spent £32,336 buying votes.

On 6 February 1800, the House of Commons in Dublin voted for union by 158 votes to 115.
On 1 August the Act of Union became law, to come into effect on 1 January 1801, creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

For hundreds of years it seems the Scots have never tired of being ordered about by the English.

“No Man or Boy within that part of Great Britain called Scotland . . . shall on any Pretence whatsoever wear or put on the Clothes commonly called the Highland Clothes, the Plaid, Philebeg or little Kilt, Trowse, Shoulder Belts.”

and so the Parliament in Westminster continues to pass laws to keep the Scots in their place.

No government, no elections, no money: Northern Ireland is frozen in crisis

Political deadlock and brutal austerity trigger mass labor unrest in UK’s most divided corner.

@eunews The community integration of the economic migrants to Ireland from Scotland and Northern England did not take place.

Even after almost four centuries living their descendants still consider themselves to be an integral part of their ancestors homeland and expect to receive everlasting amounts of funding from the UK treasury for their enclave.

The only historic date they like to remember is way back at the end of the 17th century, the 12th July 1690 to be precise.

@Wen @eunews After 350 years the majority of the planted population still cleave tightly to their British heritage and mostly vote for their ancestral homeland facing politics. Their political representatives continue to display this in their No Surrender stance and the willingness to take up arms against the very suggestion of home rule, smuggled weapons from Germany in 1913.

Climate changes
Back in October 2023 we had storm Babet. It caused serious damage to the 1875 North pier at Aberdeen Harbour.
They have been shoring it up by tossing boulders into the harbour and the sea at both sides of the wall.
A proper repair will cost lots of money, and better weather. There has been a steady succession of storms since Babet.
But collectively it seems we prefer to burn 100 million barrels of oil each and every day till the climate is no longer suitable for humans.

The Lib Dem’s are now touting themselves as the Tory Removal Party.
That’s the same Liberal Democrats that rushed into supporting the Tories after the 2010 election, got themselves a few ministerial positions and voted in support of all the Tory austerity cuts in exchange for a 5 pence tax on plastic shopping bags.
Not worth a bucket of cold spit.

We have to be told this because last time .. Fukushima.

Those promoting Nuclear as Clean, Reliable, & Economic want us to forget the reactor fire back in 1957 is still being decommissioned.

Just managing, guarding, monitoring, maintaining derelict Nuclear sites costs billions each year. There is a daily consumer tax on energy users to pay the estimated £260 billion cost of decommissioning for the next 100 years.

@JackTheCat You have to ditch your TV. If you own a TV you have to buy a TV licence which is a tax paid to the BBC. They don’t care if you watch it or not. Just that you contribute to its funding. Throw your TV in a skip and cancel your licence. I did about 8 years ago and don’t feel the loss.

State of the art environmental awareness…

With the increased focus on environmental awareness what’s the best place to store high level radioactive nuclear waste, collected plutonium, sludge, and scrap metal?
How about a leaky open air cracked concrete pond built 70 years ago.

Yep, Nuclear power, the environmental alternative to nasty diesel pollution

We rightly disapprove of Hamas action of Hostage Taking in Israel, as uncivilised behaviour.

Administrative detention is arrest and imprisonment of individuals by the state without trial.
The Israeli Government currently holds over 1000 people in jail, who have not been tried or convicted of any crimes.

People, kidnapped, incarcerated and interrogated by the government without due process, sometimes for years, are always readily available for release in exchange for hostages.

Because the English electorate have repeatedly voted in Conservatives, the UK is sinking fast on the world stage. For almost all of the last 60 years they have been on the wrong side of global change. Too penny pinching to invest in their own country, but still determined to fleece the population to ensure their stately home is kept in good repair, and a Nuclear deterrent. Happy to sell off the country’s assets for sixpence in the pound, to foreign investors in exchange for a backhander. Spivs.

Invading hospitals is not a challenging task for full armed and well trained soldiers.
Unarmed Doctors, Nurses, sick people, pregnant women, mothers giving birth, infirm, elderly and disabled, children, babies and patients recovering from surgery, none of these should put up much of a fight against the might of the Israeli Defense Forces
Of course that doesn’t mean there won’t be massive casualties and collateral damage.

The triumph of hope over experience.

If you invest in a tin opener, a toaster, a lawnmower, a teapot or any implement with a specific purpose that repeatedly fails and doesn’t do what it’s supposed to, then you junk it and get a better one.

For a hundred years the Labour Party has been trying to reform the House of Lords,
But apparently, it’s still not a top priority for them.
