When thinking about , the 1940 US Presidential election happened between two major events in World War II and involved FDR’s unprecedented third term. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1940_United_States_presidential_election

leave it to the NYT to report this as if Trump still has an "edge." a ~1% lead is not a lead, it is WELL within the margin of error, especially given all the special elections over the last few years where Dems have outperformed.

@peter Imagine still reporting on a nation-wide average of opinions in the year of our lord 2024 as if the Electoral College gives a shit.

> One source at X told me that Musk has directed engineers to add Grok to the tweet box for users who pay for X Premium, the platform’s subscription feature, which means that users may soon be able to tweet with the help of AI (I imagine this will look similar to what X CEO Linda Yaccarino already posts).

@TodayInTwitter Paying an AI to write your tweets to the network of bots and AI accounts following you. Brilliant gambit, sir.

The eclipse was amazing. It reminded me of skydiving: a lot of preparation for a few minutes of awe. Totally worth the 4 hours stuck in traffic in Arkansas.

The main tip I learned online is to not waste time trying to take a good picture during totality. So I just took this one photo which shows some stars. But it’s one of those things that there are millions of better photos, so just enjoy the four minutes!

In honor of discovering that I've apparently had a Wikipedia page for a few months, I decided to tell the story of why I'm not a Wikipedian (a story I told Jimmy Wales lol) and this seems like the kind of thing that might interest you all: https://www.instagram.com/p/C5i1r68Lyk-/

Though TL;DR if you don't want to watch a four minute video, my attempt to increase coverage of children's literature on Wikipedia was met with exactly the kinds of gatekeeping acrimonious jerk behavior you might expect.

I always forget how outlandish business/econ seminar Q&A culture is.

Derailing a speaker on their third side? Normal, expected, encouraged.

Waiting to ask a question until the end of a talk?

@andresmh They had an outage earlier in the day that made it inaccessible and then slow, which was not a great experience as a first-timer. Much faster later today.

It's definitely uncanny not having results bloated with sponsored links, infoboxes, and other spamminess. Returns a different cross-section of results than I'm used to. Almost certainly a lack of individualized personalization means I get to see other "Brian Keegan"s! 🤓

National Blend of Model estimates for sky cover (blue is clear, grey is cloudy) around the time of the April 8 .

https://blend.mdl.nws.noaa.gov/nbm-images

Select “Sky” under the Weather Element drop-down and a forecast time (hours from now). You may need to change default NBM Cycle to get a forecast far enough in the future.

Cloud cover anxieties about are grounded in two distinct models of prediction:

  1. Predicting a rare but regular configuration of the Sun, Earth, and Moon.

  2. Predicting a rare but regular configuration of land, atmospheres, and water.

And now social apes are chasing these predictions by crowding into infrastructure.

https://www.axios.com/2024/04/05/airbnb-bookings-eclipse-april-8-map

It’s going to be so fun to use the eclipse as a causal instrument for on- and offline behavioral data.
