I’m a writer, but don’t expect deep, personal shit. I’m a sysadmin who doesn’t like nerds, they’re every bit as willing to be the most vicious and petty of bullies as the people they claim they’re so very different from.

But as individuals, they’re all right.

A lefty who hunts, so not an NRA fan. Done martial arts for years, not one of the MMA clowns.

If I say “free software” I ONLY am speaking of the price.

I will say this until it is no longer true:

If a non-admin user clicking on a link or opening up an infected word file damages anything on your network your security is shit.

Periodt.

I am begging for someone to explain to me why this is not working. Project is at https://github.com/johncwelch/buttonTest2, the readme explains the issue. I just need to do a really simple thing: enable a button based on the contents of the title in a given button in a grid.

won't work. Refuses to. No idea why.

anyone who has a clue, I will be in your debt forever if you can explain it to my dumb ass.

pinging @bwebster and @deirdresm because they've both helped me learn so much about swiftUI, & are wonderful.

The meme that perpetual licenses were some kind of golden age of joy is the most utterly specious, lying, effluvial spew.

Every one, every. single. person waxing nostalgic about ”pay once, own forever” also screamed like devs were slapping their grannies with hentai tentacle dicks every time a dev dared to say “this is not a free upgrade.”

“It’s too expensive” “this shit should be free” on and on, and y’all were absofuckinglutely running cracks.

So this:

https://boehs.org/node/npm-everything

First any post that starts like this:

“We are hackers, but not the steal all your data type. We are hackers in the best sense, in the sense that we are creatives who enjoy a good challenge, and aren’t afraid to get our hands dirty.”

Is going to be a massive jusitifcatiin for fuckery.

Always.

This literally a FAFO adventure, but I have some issues with it.

First, they admit to taking an action that is designed to literally affect every package in NPM.

OMFG the elitism of EV stans so perfectly illustrated in one paragraph:

“EVs charge at your house. So if you drive less than the EV’s total range each day, you’ll actually never have to fill up your “tank” — you just plug it in overnight, and in the morning it’s full and ready to go. That’s something you can’t do with a gas car! Except on long trips, you’ll be forever freed from the regular, tedious task of filling up your car every few days.”

Whenever i see people bragging about EVs, i know some things:

  1. you’re privileged enough to afford a fairly to very expensive car.

  2. with unique exception, you live in a house with at least a carport if not a nice-ish garage

  3. you live in or near a city with a lot of public places to recharge

  4. 50% of the time, you have the surplus income to afford to install a high-cap charger.

  5. you’re never poor or even lower middle class

  6. you don’t have to park on the street

I don’t think it’s a dark time to be a tech worker. I actually think it’s a great time to be a tech worker.

I think it’s a dark time to work for a tech company. There’s a difference, and it’s one I’ve talked about before. A lot of tech companies only exists because of decades of essentially free money.

And thanks to the egos of those in charge, they could not imagine an era where that would change. Oops.

Also, I love the kvetching about apple fitness not tying in to the Vision Pro.

Like do any of you people actually, you know, sweat? Because maybe you want to strap a teenage boy’s jockstrap to your face a few hours a day, not kink-shaming, but what excercise are you really going to do with the fucking thing besides yoga for rocks?

Jesus Fucknut Christ, the lack of thought in this bullshit is astounding.

I realized that in a way, being a GenXer from Miami is kind of a double whammy. because not only does your generation not really exist, but neither does the place you grew up, not really.

Miami history is by and large a TV show, and a few movies. Oh, and a brief tangle with Madonna in the late 80s/early 90s.

So I want to talk about corporate IT life that is not working for a tech company.

Folks who think they know me but don’t will be surprised to learn that in 30 years of IT, I have never worked for a tech company.

I tried, but the best I ever got were two phone interviews. One with Apple who needed me to start a job in Atlanta the next day. I was a single parent with a kid in 9th grade who lived in KC. obviously I wasn’t Apple material with my weird priorities.

A thing that just hit me:

Apple’s dev docs are fundamentally hostile to new users. They only work if you already know how to use the hell out of Swift(UI)/ObjC.

Look at the docs for a SwiftUI button: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/swiftui/button/

As someone who is not an experienced swift(ui) dev, most of that page is useless to me. I give no shits about initing a button, that’s what SwiftUI is for. What I need are the properties of a button and the built-in methods. Which are obscure at best & mostly nonexistent.

I have yet to see a single article proclaiming how awful it is that the low end MacBook Pro has only 8GB of RAM with any form of actual data supporting that.

It’s all OMG SWAP.

My brothers, sisters, and enbies in Christ, swap is no longer spinny disk over PATA/SATA.

Modern storage is running at DDR3 speeds in terms of bandwidth. It is slower than actual RAM bandwidth, but it is still really, really fast. And yet you all act as though it’s an 80MB drive on a IIci.

Show the data already.

What they really mean is RSS makes us wish we were dead because the fucking fans are worse than vegan crossfitters who just discovered both firefly & THHGTTG.

(The latest item is a book/series I have never read because I don’t have to, as for over 40 years I have had that series quoted at me at such length that reading it would be redundant. It made me wish I didn’t need towels. Ever.)

Especially because you refuse to try to understand why people think RSS is dead.

Can we please stop exalting cash? It’s fucking dangerous.

  1. people figure out you carry cash. You are a target.

  2. you get robbed of cash, you’re fucked. That shit is gone.

  3. speaking of cash, the cops will rob you too. “It may have been used in a crime.” “We find <amount> suspicious.” Bang, gone, good fucking luck getting it back.

  4. Never, ever do any tests for various biological ick on cash.

Yeah, non-cash has issues, but fuck, you gonna tell people to use paper checks too?

This is why I can’t take the anti-Adobe cunts seriously, because this is the most unserious shit ever.

Paint.net as a photoshop alternative.

“The fediverse will dominate because it’s open”

Nope. Open is defined by what it is not, not by what it is. The only people who think “open” is an inherently good quality are the same people who will use shitty, barely functional software because all the alternatives don’t have the “correct” licensing agreement.

Twitter was never open, and even before it went shitty, it was succeeding.

Why?

Okay so @deirdresm and @bwebster hopefully this is the last help I need. The last thing I need to do in my app is record and play back a game. The recording was cake, just shove the four bits of data i care about into an array, and done.

The playback…what's happening is that I have the playback in a loop with a 1 second delay via sleep(1), which ideally will show each square change one second apart.

What actually happens is nothing until the entire loop has run, and then the view updates.

@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@deirdresm @bwebster Okay, so the curse of too many projects running at once, the thing where it's not updating the coordinates in all the cells when I resize is in THIS project: https://github.com/johncwelch/cellArrayTest

which has significant differences from buttonTest2 (https://github.com/johncwelch/buttonTest2)

I did make some updates to buttonTest 2 and push those up. The comments on lines 58/59 show where it's currently blowing up

soo....close.

It’s almost always unpatched shit. Everyone freaks out about zero-days when more damage is caused by attacks for which patches exist.

This is a solved problem, but everyone clings to the old school of “we have to test patches first.”

No you don’t. Stop delaying security updates. You cannot, can. not. respond to this kind of thing: https://www.wired.com/story/notpetya-cyberattack-ukraine-russia-code-crashed-the-world/

at human speeds. You’ll fail, you already have.
