I’m a writer, but don’t expect deep, personal shit. I’m a sysadmin who doesn’t like nerds, they’re every bit as willing to be the most vicious and petty of bullies as the people they claim they’re so very different from.

But as individuals, they’re all right.

A lefty who hunts, so not an NRA fan. Done martial arts for years, not one of the MMA clowns.

If I say “free software” I ONLY am speaking of the price.

I’m in a reflective mood this week and it’s kind of wild to me that I’m known as a “provocateur” in for takes like:

💡 don’t shame victims

💡 UX matters, a lot

💡we should understand what we’re supposed to protect

💡 if someone clicking a thing on the thing-clicking machine leads to security failure, they are not the foolish one

💡 the best things a security program can invest in aren’t in the RSAC vendor hall

💡 maybe we should start actually proving outcomes??????????

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Infosec complains about shadow IT whilst being the biggest cause of it. They’re like arsonists who moonlight as firefighters.

People on Twitter are debating whether a person using uncommon words like "delve" are trying to sound smarter than they are, or worse, are ChatGPT bots, because "normal" people don't talk like that.

You don't have to get upset, or embroiled in the debate. Not worth the time or attention. But I'll share some important context as your friendly neighborhood Nigerian 🙋🏿‍♂️

Many Nigerians have bigger English language vocabularies and better command of grammar than the typical American or English person

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke when I was like…8 or so, I was out with my parents. Who mind you, played scrabble as a full-contact sport. They were brutally good. So I had been raised by two people with amazing vocabularies and the wit to use them.

I forget what I said, but someone nearby said something to the effect of “that child is too smart for their own good, trying to sound smarter than they are.”

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke Not those words exactly, but you get the gist. My mom looked over at them and said

“He sounds exactly as smart as he has been raised to be. If that is causing you distress, might I suggest night school?”

My mom stared at them (I think it was a woman, but I can’t be sure. We’ll go with some form of Karen) until they backed down and left the area.

She said to me “never, ever be ashamed of being smart. It is one of your best qualities, and something that I am quite proud of.”

was chatting with a friend about some of the challenges with teaching yourself programming topics:

  • you have random gaps that you don’t even know about
  • it's hard to assess your level, you might know a lot about one subtopic and be a total beginner elsewhere
  • it's very difficult to guess what other fellow autodidacts know about the subject

I've had to learn how to suss out what shared knowledge base I have with another programmer on any given topic quickly so that we can talk

(1/?)

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@b0rk @JMMaok also, no one actually teaches anyone how to write docs.

Well, they do, but those are technical writers and editors and we know how they’re viewed in the industry.

If you got upset at me for pointing out that more people died of Covid under Biden than Trump, in large part because Biden rolled back common sense restrictions that were in place under Trump...

Then you'll hate me pointing out that Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs, and Biden is upping that to 100% tariff.

We can't allow the US to get off of fossil fuels... unless US billionaires win! 🤡

@ksawatsky @mekkaokereke the Kia Rio starts at $16,750. Not that 3 under 20K is great, but still. You can also get a Chevy track right at $20K. I really wish Honda would bring back the Fit.

Today I was reminded of the best description of IT I have ever encountered: My first IT job, my boss explained IT this way:

“It’s like being a doctor & you’ve a patient sayings:

“Doctor, it hurts when I stick a fork in my eye.”

You, being a doctor, use your knowledge & expertise & tell the patient to not stick forks in their eyes.

They say: “You misunderstand: I want you to make it stop hurting.”

IT in a nutshell: the unending quest to make it not hurt when they stick a fork in their eye.”

A public service announcement with an expiration date: if you've loved my writing and science, I have a book proposal+sample chapter out on submission right now. The pitch is "The Psychology of Software Teams": a general audience, warmly human, accessible book for teams, leaders, and curious minds, filled to the brim with practitioner stories AND the new empirical social science of technology innovation. 🙌❤️

Let me know if you know editors who might be interested in this uniquely cool project.

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina @MartinVeart after 30 years in IT, the technical part is laughably easy compared to the human factors. The psychology, sociology and anthropology of tech and IT are so important and utterly trivialized within the industry, but they wonder why they keep having the same problems over and over.

What's your favorite story about one of your family members?

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi When my dad got mangled in a car accident, she carried the three of us on her back. She was smart, amazing, an absolutely cutthroat scrabble player, and someone who in a time women didn’t, grabbed life by the fuckin’ throat and squeezed.

She was amazing.

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi my mom. She worked for the USAF in the very late 1940s in Japan.

In Hiroshima.

Came home with radiation sickness. Recovered and proceeded to spend the time from then until I “whoopsed” along traveling all over the country solo, ran her own business solo, was the epitome of the cool auntie for her nieces and had this amazing life.

She deserved better than my dad who was a nice guy, but also a fuckin’ mess. They were married in Nov. I was born in march. 🤔

I love all the people saying creators should have no right to control if their work is used, for free, in AI training so a small number of companies can, instead doing their own work, vacuum up other people’s work, making literal billions from it while actual creators can’t even dream about making a living from their art.

It is zero surprise that everyone with this view is heavily involved in the tech industry.

If anyone complaining about “division” puts the blame on a minority, they are spouting white supremacist shit and can be ignored.

Yes, even if their intent is “good”.

Listen, I know it’s funny to mock the “…I KNOW THIS…” scene in Jurassic Park, but when that movie came out, to have a young girl who wasn’t some kind of alt-indie-goth chick be good with computers and in the same movie, a Black man is shown to be a lead IT person if not head of the department was huge.

That you didn’t have to be part of some specific subculture, but just be whoever you are and be good with tech?

Massive.

I have yet to see a single article proclaiming how awful it is that the low end MacBook Pro has only 8GB of RAM with any form of actual data supporting that.

It’s all OMG SWAP.

My brothers, sisters, and enbies in Christ, swap is no longer spinny disk over PATA/SATA.

Modern storage is running at DDR3 speeds in terms of bandwidth. It is slower than actual RAM bandwidth, but it is still really, really fast. And yet you all act as though it’s an 80MB drive on a IIci.

Show the data already.

You know how the Jimmy Kimmel version is funny?

This one isn’t, it is deeply depressing and disturbing watching these women read the filth they are targeted with every day.

The copyright system, imperfect as it is was the only way my ex could do anything to stop people from stealing her work, including Random House Germany.

It stopped a game company from wholesale ripping off the work of multiple artists.

It’s not perfect, but it’s also not only useful for the rich.

Her dream was to make a living as an artist, and I got news for you, the people who made her realize how impossible that was were neither rich nor powerful.

They were, to a person, all in the “copyright is evil, piracy is a right” camp.

She’s not the only artist y’all drove off.

So from me to all of you: eat shit and I hope the only art you ever see is 100% AI bullshit. You don’t deserve anything else.

@roland @uliwitness @chuqvr @boris here is what, ultimately, people hate about paying for software:

Paying.

In any form.

If that wasn’t the core issue, the endless search for a mythical way for software devs to make a living in a way that was absolutely painless for people and made them want to pay sans complaint including for good support would not be the questing beast of tech.

People hate paying for software. There is no model that will fix that.
