Not true...

Although... when American writers have British characters putting CREAM in their tea????????????????

caronallan,
@caronallan@mastodon.social avatar

@NaraMoore No it's not a real thing... and we still do miles per hour in the UK unlike a lot of nations that use kilometers per hour. I just took the opportunity to rant about (mainly US) authors who set a book in the UK but know nothing about the UK!

4. Is there writing advice you used to follow but changed your mind?
I also did the no adverbs thing - but it just isn't me - I love a sparingly used adverb! The other thing was the 'said is dead' advice about dialogue tags. I don't agree! Said is almost always the best tag to use - invisible, unobtrusive. The reader glides past it, without being distracted by tags such as expounded, explained, all those perfectly okay verbs that ruin the reading process by being so loud and proud.

@caronallan@mastodon.social avatar

@elysegrasso @Klepsis @gahlearner @crcollins @AlinaLeonova It took me a while to realise you don't need to tag every piece of dialogue.

Book 5 of my Silk Rope Masters series is finally finished, I've edited the heck out of it. I can do no more. With nervous anticipation I've sent the MS and the synopsis off to my publisher. Now comes the haunting of my email box for the next three months 👻 ...lol

True story: one day a couple of years ago, I went into my garden in the morning and discovered I had become the proud wrangler of some chickens... then my neighbour arrived with a story about a broken fence and an escape plan...
But aren't they beautiful?

This is something I struggle with sometimes. I know a few plot points, but often not all of the main ones. I don't always know my book's ending.
How about you?

@crcollins @alan @nlowell @NaraMoore
I find it interesting just how many writers don't follow 'the rules' - my approach to each new book has to change to discover the way into the story. I sometimes know what's going to happen in vague terms, but this will often change if I'm unhappy with the finished draft. I disagree with authors who say there is a set way to write, and I think this can discourage authors who are still finding their way and for whom the rules don't work.

Keep writing onwards - don't look back until your first draft is done. And don't be afraid to embrace the mess.

I think this makes nice wall art, but I wouldn't feel I could take the books out to read them... What about you, could you store your books this way?

How do you find beta readers? Would you beta read yourself?

I don't do beta-reading, nor do I use beta-readers. I tried it once as everyone said that was the thing to do, but it didn't work for me - too many contradictory viewpoints, it was too hard to draw any conclusions from the feedback. The closest I come to beta-reading for others is proofreading my daughter's books, and she does the same for me, which involves some discussions too.

caronallan,
@caronallan@mastodon.social avatar

@crcollins @ixtlidekami It's interesting, isn't it? At what point is it okay to change your book so it is what a selected group of readers want and no longer your book?
