4. Is there writing advice you used to follow but changed your mind?
I also did the no adverbs thing - but it just isn't me - I love a sparingly used adverb! The other thing was the 'said is dead' advice about dialogue tags. I don't agree! Said is almost always the best tag to use - invisible, unobtrusive. The reader glides past it, without being distracted by tags such as expounded, explained, all those perfectly okay verbs that ruin the reading process by being so loud and proud.

True story: one day a couple of years ago, I went into my garden in the morning and discovered I had become the proud wrangler of some chickens... then my neighbour arrived with a story about a broken fence and an escape plan...
But aren't they beautiful?

This is something I struggle with sometimes. I know a few plot points, but often not all of the main ones. I don't always know my book's ending.
How about you?

Keep writing onwards - don't look back until your first draft is done. And don't be afraid to embrace the mess.

I think this makes nice wall art, but I wouldn't feel I could take the books out to read them... What about you, could you store your books this way?

Feb 27
How do you find beta readers? Would you beta read yourself?

I don't do beta-reading, nor do I use beta-readers. I tried it once as everyone said that was the thing to do, but it didn't work for me - too many contradictory viewpoints, it was too hard to draw any conclusions from the feedback. The closest I come to beta-reading for others is proofreading my daughter's books, and she does the same for me, which involves some discussions too.

Feb 24—Has reader feedback ever changed the way you write?

Not feedback, but some very negative reviews in my early days as an indie author really upset me and I couldn't write for months. I lost my confidence and felt so depressed. Then, I spoke to another, more seasoned author and she told me, you can't please everyone, and you just have to shake it off. Now, I rarely read reviews. I am writing primarily for myself and those few who love my work and support me.

Ah, the dreaded second book. And the third... then the fourth... the fifth, the sixth...
I'm still not sure I know what I'm doing. Every book is different, and I need to find a new way into the story every time.
