The Bombing of Guernica happened today in 1937. It was a new and horrible cooperation between fascists states (Francoist Spain, Nazi Germany, and Fascist Italy) to bomb civilians and ultimately lay the blame for the mass casualties on "guerrillas”, “terrorists”... in this case “Reds”.

This is a demonstration of the enshitification of [air] travel taken on a new level.. disrespecting Indigenous Leaders.

I am going to be super busy all day, but this response from the Office of the Information Commissioner of Canada just came into my inbox. I argued Public Safety Canada (emergency communications) services were violating privacy laws using corporate social media. They say they don't have jurisdiction to make the call. Would be interested in your guys thoughts on a response before I have time to think on mine.

@Cassandra i thought I would try the information commissioner first from an access perspective. But I will definitely try the privacy commissioner next

The Supreme Court of the USA is seeing arguments that would allow a coup and end to democracy in that country. This is not an exaggeration.
Canada should also see at this, and respond in defence of democracy.

Hey @scottsantens and #UBI friends! This Canadian House of Commons petition needs some help to get across the finish line in the next couple days! Can you help spread the word for more signatures!?

Canadian media is so full of Fossil Fuel and domestic Car Manufacturer (I include Toyota in this as they have many plants in USA/Canada) apologists they have convinced themselves that because Tesla's sales are flagging (likely because of their idiot CEO turning people off the whole brand of overly expensive, poorly built cars) and domestic makers are pulling back production then the whole EV industry has "trouble ahead”.

Meanwhile, Hyundai America had its best March ever including EV sales doubling.

https://www.hyundainews.com/en-us/releases/4116

Newsflash: Maybe people are buying less Tesla and Ford EVs because they're not as good as other options.

And yes, I own a Hyundai, mainly because Toyota had no EV models in 2019 and even now, 5 years later, only sells one! ONE!

Government needs to get off their butts and force our 20th century laggards into the 21st century but they are in bed with each other so….

@Hypx sure. now tell us about "Green Hydrogen"

chris,
@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca avatar

@Hypx while I agree Hydrogen will play a critical role, I think you are underestimating by a largr degree what can and should be electrified.

chris,
@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca avatar

@Hypx Hydrogen (made with electricity only) is and will always be extremely expensive to create and so will need to be kept to only a last resort.

A fuel cell vehicle requires hydrogen to be created in order to drive an electric motor. Equating a hydrogen vehicle to an electric vehicle that derives electricity directly because they both use an electric motor is silly. The source matters.

Also, cars and batteries are stupid in general. The real solution is less of both.

chris,
@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca avatar

@Hypx You are right, but you also continue to ignore the source of the hydrogen. You likely know full well the fossil fuel industry is chomping at the bit to produce the hydrogen needed by burning natural gas. Which is exactly the opposite of any solution at all. Propaganda by omission of facts is its own kind of propaganda.

chris,
@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca avatar

@Hypx the point, my friend again as you know, that the grid energy can and must be generated cleanly. Hydrogen is a transportation medium, nothing more. Again you avoided the question. You're the only one insisting on fossil fuels being our future. We're done here. Have a great day!

Petition is officially closed! It received 1012 signatures. It'll now be certified by the Clerk and then it can be presented in the House by the sponsor MP. Then the government has 90 days to respond.

Thank you to all of you who signed, shared, and supported the petition! Keep using the link to advocate for trusted, publicly run, servers for politicians and other public services.

I have always been suspicious that the "EVs are too expensive" notion is a plant by Fossil Fuel companies and some car manufacturers to shift the blame to consumers for not transitioning to EVs.

So here's a comparison of the most popular vehicles in Canada in 2022 vs. most popular EVs in Canada in 2024.
https://driving.ca/column/driving-by-numbers/10-best-selling-vehicles-canada-2022
https://driving.ca/column/driving-by-numbers/10-best-selling-electric-vehicles-canada-2023

(All prices are 2024 models in Canadian $)

10: Hyundai Elantra: $21,999 v Audi Q4 e-tron: $63,400
9: Hyundai Kona: $25,999 v Mustang Mach-E: $57,690
8: Honda Civic: $28,765 v Kia Niro EV: $48,544
7: Honda CR-V: $37,261 v Toyota bZ4x: $48,042
6: Toyota Corolla: $26,372 v Hyundai Ioniq 5: $54,999
5: GMC Sierra: $48,931 v Hyundai Kona Electric: $46,399
4: Chevy Silverado: $47,931 v Volkswagen ID.4: $51,220
3: Toyota RAV4: $36,202 v Chevy Bolt: $41,575
2: Dodge Ram: $37,952 v Tesla Model 3: $53,990
1: Ford F-150: $46,600 v Tesla Model Y: $54,990

Averages: Gas: $35,801.20 EV: $52,084.90

So ya, the difference overall is about $20,000 on average.

However, these are all base prices and while EVs generally have only a few higher priced options, the Gas cars/trucks often start low and have many higher priced options, some over $75K. So I believe the real-world selling price averages would be closer.

I believe it will take governments being aggressive and consistent on their Electric-only targets to force companies to re-tool their productions to both meet demand and bring the prices down.

Both Canada and the USA have recently gone in the opposite direction, both pushing back their EV-only targets. This is both why prices remain high, and we won't hit our CO2 reductions.

And ya, as a proud Hyundai Kona Electric owner, I'm going to finish with this “call-out" from the CEO of Hyundai to other manufacturers.

"Why would anybody want to purchase an EV from an [automaker like Toyota or GM] who’s lobbying against EVs?”

Indeed!

Question for Canadian . Are there Canada-located masto.host type services for creation of scalable independent Mastodon domains?

chris,
@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca avatar

@kboyd The shoe that needs to drop is the ability for Mastodon to be a plugin-like service that could be added to existing web hosting platforms like CPanel/WHM. Then the full ecosystem of webhosts would be able to add it to their offerings and it would be trivial for people/businesses/whoever to “make a mastodon/fediverse website”
