I am a fan of Star Trek Discovery, but even I can admit that some of the writing has always been a bit weak. When it’s good it’s really good, but when it’s not it’s like head scratching bad.

I know this is definitely dreaming too big, but an iPad Pro with two ports would definitely make it a little more “pro.”

As of now, if I have any piece of hardware which can’t be reliably, used through a hub, I can’t do whatever I’m trying to do on my iPad.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

I think the idea that the iPad Pro could be useful for someone doing live streaming is really the bare minimum of being “pro”.

I am not even talking about making it so you could realistically edit a movie in Final Cut on iPad, I am talking about being able to play your Nintendo switch with a good face cam while charging your iPad.

@willhbr haha you might be making a decent point. I would really be OK running iPadOS though and being an iPad if it was just a little more “pro”. There were plenty of circumstances where having that touchscreen UI is great.

MagSafe plus a Thunderbolt port would be okay. Even if I had to buy another sort of MagSafe cable that attached where the keyboard does.

Okay people - especially people - can one actually buy just a plain old acoustic guitar these days at a reasonable price? I'd love to be able to get a little more bang for my buck with just a regular old acoustic (no electronics/pickups) Auditorium or Concert size guitar (not a Dreadnought if I can help it) to play in my family room and out on my back deck.

I don't ever plan on playing out, so no need to plug in? I just want to strum and play cowboy chords and shit, but don't want a bulky dread, nor do I want a little Parlor guitar.

Please help with ideas/recommendations and used is fine.

Thank you in advance!

@CoachMark What's a reasonable price? Under $1000? $2000? I've heard good things about Recording King guitars, but I haven't played one. For a concert sized guitar, the Guild M-120 is $699 and all mahogany, which seems like a good deal if that's your vibe.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@tidmarsh @CoachMark I would give Guild a look as well. If you’re willing to up a little, you might be able to find a used Gibson L-00 for not too much more. That’s what I did and it’s one of my favorite acoustics.

Wait. iPadOS 17 supports external cameras but apps have to opt in? And on top of that the system camera app doesn't even support it? Are you fucking kidding me?

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

This is the sort of thing that makes me not interested in upgrading my iPad. The OS is severely underpowered, and even when they do add features, they're always weirdly limited in some way to the point of not being useful.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

I found a third party recording/streaming app which seems like it will more or less do what I want, but I still don't get why external cameras are something every app has to support on an individual basis. If I had to go to Settings to turn it on per app, that would be fine, but at least the Camera app should support this out of the box.

Is there a word for when you see something everyday and are moving it until you need it and then it's nowhere to be found?

I got to season 9 of Stargate and man I do not like Vala so far.

I'm happy to have something to watch, and the show is still fine, but they probably should have called it when Richard Dean Anderson decided he didn't want to do the show anymore.

Do you have any kind of organizational scheme for your iCloud Drive folder? Part me wonders if I should have a top level folder I put all of my documents under so my root is just the app directories, downloads, and that.

I basically never want to see the app folders if I don’t have to.

@babbage that’s pretty much what I was thinking of doing. Thanks!

I still think you should be able to add locations to tags and lists in Reminders. I want one grocery list with tags for the places I can get those things. I rarely want to add a location to an individual reminder.

Downloaded this SimplySing app, and it’s actually pretty cool! My issue is that like with most of these things, they don’t have enough songs I want to sing.

Jobs can’t love you back. You can’t work for a publicly traded company and think they won’t fire you the second they think it will make them more money to do so.

Here is what I love about tech people. Most of us don’t get old and stop being excited about new things. I don’t know that I’ve ever met a programmer complaining about kids these days.

We tend to be excited for what’s next. As forty looms, I hope I always keep that.

Meanwhile, he chimed in on Kendrick and Drake’s rap beef quite a bit. He also seemed to call X a “freedom technology” in a tweet on Saturday, warning users to not depend on corporations to grant them rights."

Wow... I'm glad I deleted my Twitter account long ago. Because wtf?

@noellemitchell I’m so confused. X is a corporation, but it’s also a freedom technology? Is he high?

Once or twice my Dad got mad at me growing for spending so much time on the computer and said “are you just gonna spend your whole life on the computer!?”

I can now say confidently that the answer is, yeah, pretty much.

I really want a hybrid multitrack DAW like Logic that can record video at the same time. I don’t know why this isn’t a thing.

I like how since the 1950s — when cigarette filters were introduced — researchers knew they didn't offer any health benefits, the US Surgeon General declared it in the 1970s, and yet they still make cigarettes that way.

@collin@ruby.social avatar

If Apple didn’t already have iWork, Final Cut, or Logic, would they make them now? Kind of hard to imagine that kind of investment in new software from them. What even comes close in the last fifteen years?

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@veganstraightedge @davetron5000 they aren’t going anywhere. Logic gets updated all the time and is really popular.
