    My boyfriend got a very expensive education and knows multiple people who were “inconvenient” enough for their families that they were INSTITUTIONALIZED AGAINST THEIR WILL. Is this a thing rich people are still doing? And there’s no recourse? He basically shrugged like this is normal. Is this normal??

    @ryanhoulihan I've been out of that social sphere and world for some time, but as of the ‘90s and early aughts, absolutely it was still a thing. If it can embarrass the family, it can, and will, absolutely be suppressed. Institutionalization is an extreme, but never not a possibility. The extremely wealthy will, at all cost, defend their image of deservedness, nothing is ever their fault but profits always are always owed to them.

    @ryanhoulihan Ugh, I don't think I'll ever entirely understand that almost entirely, distinctively, white, male need to offer advice regardless of the situation. That's not to say I haven't been raised to do exactly that, but I see it externally and internally and I can't get my head all the way around the why of it. It's just never, ever helpful, to anyone.

    @ecn @hungry_joe @Verso I will never understand why this company chose this demo to show to Miyazaki. How can they not have understood, seeing his films to that point, that that demo would have been fundamentally offensive to him? Seriously, it's offensive in general, in so many ways and to so many groups of people, but to present THAT?! To Studio Ghibli? Motherfuckers, you need to cut down your weekly cocaine intake. Seriously.

    @ryanhoulihan Funny story, I'm 3/4 of the way through a rewatch of the movie right now. Haven't seen the remake yet, but looking forward to it as Donald Glover tends to rock whatever he's in.

    Is the original super hetero-normative? Yes. Does it care? Nope. It’s got one joke, wife superior to husband. Is it still fun? Yes. Do I care how reductive it is? No. Do I believe their relationship after my own 20+ years of marriage and seeing many friends’ ups and downs in marriage? Mostly, yeah…

    A lot of people that claim that MLK jr was somehow loved by all and better than today's civil rights leaders, are just lying.

    A lot of people claiming that "Black Lives Matter" or "Defund the Police" are bad marketing, and that they would support these movements if they were named something better like "Non-violent march," are just lying. It's not the phrase that these people object to. It's the underlying principle. They do not accept that current US policing is a negative on reducing crime.

    Not only not remember, but in cases of those of us who were born more than a decade after King's time were never taught/told about it in school. I was born in the late ‘70s and didn't know about any of that until I was near college age. And what was included around the civil rights movement and was cursory at best and strongly implied that civil rights were a settled issue.

    Earnest post: 2023 was a year high highs, including five big projects I’m so proud of, and devastating lows in my personal life.

    Going into 2024, I’m working on another five (absolutely huge) projects, all in different mediums and for different audiences – and each with really exciting and impressive collaborators – that I cannot wait to get out the door. And whatever the unexpected lows are, I will simply sass and BS and cry my way through them again.

    Also I’m gonna look hot.
