If this lands on your feed, tell me about different features that are just missing in Matrix.

It can be anything, but please don't include memes like "unable to decrypt message" or other things that are already in the works, or maybe has already been merged (e.g media captions)

Some examples include better forwarded messages, rich profiles, or a live location sharing, just to name a few.

(I am writing something about this, boosts appreciated!)

@solrize

Well, let me go by example: The strength of E-Mail lies in the fact that its a robust standard that, instead of siloing users into their platforms, brings people together into one single userbase.

Similarly with federation in social media, this makes userbases not compete but collaborate. If I created an ActivityPub-Powered project right now, I'd have to convince nobody to use it and still be part of a community.

One difference however is that social media is public. As the person that runs the server, you do have to put in some measures to make sure that your users are actually feeling safe. The most extreme of these measures is defederation, where you just completely cut off another server, but there's also other ways to limit other servers, like for example, hiding their accounts by default in say the "federated" feed in Mastodon and co.

cyrus,
@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

@solrize

The fact that you're not even noticing the federation shows how effective it is ;)

You're probably browsing communities that aren't on Lemmy.world often without realising, I'm here replying to you from wetdry.world (a mastodon instance), and the OP also doesn't come from Lemmy.world

The cool thing about this is that no single server, company, or entity in general gets to decide over the wider fediverse, because everything is spread out and shared between thousands of independent servers. This is completely opposite to what traditional social media services have built.

cyrus,
@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

@solrize

There's no gatekeeper to satisfy because even when one server defederates from you, you are still able to curate and protect your own community.

Personally, who cares if there's some Nazis and trolls less in my feed? 🥴

cyrus,
@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

@boogetyboo there's still a good chance you're using your Internet Service Provider's DNS.

Not only does this mean its super trivial for them to block things they don't want you to access, but this also means they can see (and they probably log) everything you do; no good for privacy or freely accessible info

Try switching to something like quad9, and reboot your devices after to make sure they've cleared their DNS cache

PS:
You can just add dns.quad9.net to Settings > Network > Private DNS on Android if you don't want the app.

cyrus,
@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

@unterzicht that IS it's use. It is primarily used in show-off posts where people present their systems so that people in the replies can get a quick glance on what they're running.

The reason this is big news is because neofetch was by far the biggest project of it's kind

If people can do this just with publically available data, you can guess what discord themselves - with much more data at their hands - can do.

archive.org is useful if you don't wanna create an account to read this.

Apparently, my school has raised an issue regarding my attendance at school (which I have tried to keep up as much as my mental health allows it), which will require me to prove using a medical certificate that I had some medical reason to not attend school those days.

Not having a Therapist which could give me such a medical certificate, they will probably fine me up to 1000€ (from what my limited research seems to suggest).

If I am lucky, I can get them to agree on a medical certificate from a normal doctor for the past ~2 weeks, but usually the fine is capped at ~1000€ and is increased with each day that you couldn't attend (which are a lot)

As such, as much as I hate to ask for this, I'd like to ask you to chip in support as neither I or my immediate family would be able to cover the costs.

This is urgent, because I do not know how much time is between now, and when they demand a fine.
Me having to pay a fine is pretty much guaranteed as I don't have medical certificates to back me up.

Time to move off of DDG. What else is out there?

@rysiek @Mojeek is often my go-to, but many people dislike it due to how different the search results are.

You may be interested in aggregating results using SearxNG, maybe? https://searx.space

For today's example of what Discord is NOT, here is PrismLauncher using Discord as file storage for community-made icon themes that they advertise as Discord-Only on their Wiki.

is there like a reverse of XKCD 1172 where it isn't about a feature being removed and that breaking the workflow, but rather about a feature not existing and that breaking the workflow?

I really need something to point to like that, sometimes.

You can officially contact me using Signal now!

I've set up a username, cyrus.69 over there (yes, that discriminator was random)

I'll be looking forward to a message, if it doesn't work be sure to get the 7.0.0 Beta!

Technically you should be able to find and message me on the latest stable version too, but if not, use the beta.

I've also attached a QRCode you can scan in-app :)

BlueSky has the potential for misinformation worse than even Twitter.

I had to / wanted to pump this out because barely anyone (that isn't on the fediverse lol) is aware of any of these issues at all, despite how serious they are a threat to BlueSky as a platform for news and information.

BlueSky does not verify when something is/was posted at all. You can post at any time in the past down to around the year 10 (yes, 10). It does not verify links or link previews, so you can hyperlink something misleading, or put something into link previews that doesn't match any content (if at all, there doesn't even need to be content)

The exploit regarding links is here: https://github.com/qwell/bsky-exploits
For the date/time thing, https://klearsky.pages.dev has the ability to post wrong-time posts. see here: https://bsky.app/profile/cyrneko.bsky.social/post/3kkkpld5ywc2b

I hope I don't have to explain that putting arbitrary links, link previews and post times is a DISASTER for everyone except those that seek to spread mis- or disinformation. It allows someone to post wrongful links or previews which look legitimate at times which look legitimate. I would assume that if you seek it out there is already posts and accounts abusing these features to create legitimate looking mis- or disinformation posts aimed at confusing or otherwise tricking people into believing it's real information.

Anyone that cares enough and has a computer of any kind can spread misinfo. That is how easy it is.

Additionally, anyone can register a real looking domain and pair this disinformation with a real looking account that's linked to a real looking domain, like a fake cnn.com domain.

BlueSky does not seem to care about fixing any of this.

cyrus, to privacy
@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

BlueSky is "open" now.

What, you thought they finally enabled federation? No, they're still ignoring security issues (arbitrary link previews, no post time checks), have no federation and self-hosting BlueSky is still useless.

Oh, they also still want a phone number, great for /s

Just as a little reminder, the Fediverse has been open since forever. A lot of those flooding in now do so due to hype.
