@cyrus@wetdry.world

I'm an 18-year-old tech lover from Germany who values privacy and adores cats. Probably Has ADHD and is probably autistic.

#Trans :spinny_fox_trans: / #NonBinary :spinny_fox_nb:

Things I boost don't necessarily have to be things I agree with. They can just be things I want people to see.

Make sure you've got a bio or introductory post when you want to follow me.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

cyrus,
@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

@unterzicht that IS it's use. It is primarily used in show-off posts where people present their systems so that people in the replies can get a quick glance on what they're running.

The reason this is big news is because neofetch was by far the biggest project of it's kind

cyrus,
@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

@solrize

There's no gatekeeper to satisfy because even when one server defederates from you, you are still able to curate and protect your own community.

Personally, who cares if there's some Nazis and trolls less in my feed? 🥴

cyrus,
@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

@solrize

The fact that you're not even noticing the federation shows how effective it is ;)

You're probably browsing communities that aren't on Lemmy.world often without realising, I'm here replying to you from wetdry.world (a mastodon instance), and the OP also doesn't come from Lemmy.world

The cool thing about this is that no single server, company, or entity in general gets to decide over the wider fediverse, because everything is spread out and shared between thousands of independent servers. This is completely opposite to what traditional social media services have built.

cyrus,
@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

@solrize

Well, let me go by example: The strength of E-Mail lies in the fact that its a robust standard that, instead of siloing users into their platforms, brings people together into one single userbase.

Similarly with federation in social media, this makes userbases not compete but collaborate. If I created an ActivityPub-Powered project right now, I'd have to convince nobody to use it and still be part of a community.

One difference however is that social media is public. As the person that runs the server, you do have to put in some measures to make sure that your users are actually feeling safe. The most extreme of these measures is defederation, where you just completely cut off another server, but there's also other ways to limit other servers, like for example, hiding their accounts by default in say the "federated" feed in Mastodon and co.

Newpipe is getting updates on fdroid again and seem like will be getting updates for the foreseeable future as the issue stopping it is solved. (f-droid.org)

Also on an unrelated note anyway to remove live from your subscribed channels update field ? Some channels are filling it with live so i have to really scroll down to see my video feeds and can’t find a setting to switch it off. Newpipe didn’t used to add live in your what’s new feed of subscribed channels, related pic .

cyrus,
@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

@sigmaklimgrindset well, for one, it is a completely separate app

No seriously, where ReVanced is a collection of patches for the official YouTube app(s) (and some others)

NewPipe is a built-from-the-ground, independent, no-Google-Code YouTube client that relies entirely on scraping the website using NewPipeExtractor

As such, the entire experience apart from the content itself differs.

Last friday, I have received a takedown request from a company representing Apple, requesting I remove a parody account that is Apple on my instance.
They are claiming that it attempts to "mislead users into believing that the account is sponsored by or affiliated with Apple when that is not the case".

I am convinced that the account was legally in the right as it was very obvious that it is a parody account, but unfortunately I am powerless against a gigacorporation in court as they could just financially ruin me if they feel like it.

Therefore, I would like to warn everyone NOT to create Apple parody accounts using Apple's logo and word mark on your instances, as this would be violating Apple's intellectual property and would waste the time and money of the law firm that actively scours the internet for these types of accounts! :neocat_o_o:

I have uploaded the full email I received: https://me.lea.pet/assets/legal/Takedown%20Notice%20from%20Apple%20Inc.html

@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

@lea I was very sad when I found out that is a firm that indeed has Apple as one of it's clients :(

cyrus,
@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

@boogetyboo there's still a good chance you're using your Internet Service Provider's DNS.

Not only does this mean its super trivial for them to block things they don't want you to access, but this also means they can see (and they probably log) everything you do; no good for privacy or freely accessible info

Try switching to something like quad9, and reboot your devices after to make sure they've cleared their DNS cache

PS:
You can just add dns.quad9.net to Settings > Network > Private DNS on Android if you don't want the app.

@Neznak

Sliding-Sync was the proposal, they've just started work on simplifying it, and as such an implementation directly in Synapse is coming soon.

There's other improvements made with Sliding-Sync, but the "sliding" part required the server to order messages optimally, which doesn't work well with encryption, so that part basically got dropped. SyncV3 will as such be dubbed "Simplified Sliding Sync"

FYI, any client can implement SyncV3, even before it's merged, just nobody apart from Element did as it evolved rapidly and keeping up would be difficult.

cyrus,
@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

@esm @hywan no, Krille-Chan did not implement that because it is still rapidly evolving at the moment.

Element, which has been spearheading the effort for the past 6-7 months is currently working on getting SyncV3 into Synapse, simplifying it in the process as the "sliding" part (inspired by how Discord does it) doesn't work well in encrypted rooms.[1]

[1]: it requires the server to order events, which isn't reliable in encrypted rooms as the HS doesn't know the contents. There are other improvements that came with Sliding-Sync apart from the "Sliding" part that'll still allow clients to dramatically reduce the amount of data they request.

@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

If this lands on your feed, tell me about different features that are just missing in Matrix.

It can be anything, but please don't include memes like "unable to decrypt message" or other things that are already in the works, or maybe has already been merged (e.g media captions)

Some examples include better forwarded messages, rich profiles, or a live location sharing, just to name a few.

(I am writing something about this, boosts appreciated!)

cyrus,
@cyrus@wetdry.world avatar

@fell well a lot of reliability improvements came from Vodozemac (new crypto/encryption implementation) and performance is gonna get a lot better with SyncV3 (which is also very very soon)

Apparently, my school has raised an issue regarding my attendance at school (which I have tried to keep up as much as my mental health allows it), which will require me to prove using a medical certificate that I had some medical reason to not attend school those days.

Not having a Therapist which could give me such a medical certificate, they will probably fine me up to 1000€ (from what my limited research seems to suggest).

If I am lucky, I can get them to agree on a medical certificate from a normal doctor for the past ~2 weeks, but usually the fine is capped at ~1000€ and is increased with each day that you couldn't attend (which are a lot)

As such, as much as I hate to ask for this, I'd like to ask you to chip in support as neither I or my immediate family would be able to cover the costs.

This is urgent, because I do not know how much time is between now, and when they demand a fine.
Me having to pay a fine is pretty much guaranteed as I don't have medical certificates to back me up.

For today's example of what Discord is NOT, here is PrismLauncher using Discord as file storage for community-made icon themes that they advertise as Discord-Only on their Wiki.

@PrismLauncher what's up with this?

Before anyone dares:

  1. Tuta also has transparency reports: https://tuta.com/blog/transparency-report
  2. E-Mail is inherently less private than most other options
  3. There's not much you can do as a company if you wanna keep existing in this situation
  4. No, using another provider isn't inherently more private, that in of itself is just shifting trust. Yes, even self-hosting.

You can officially contact me using Signal now!

I've set up a username, cyrus.69 over there (yes, that discriminator was random)

I'll be looking forward to a message, if it doesn't work be sure to get the 7.0.0 Beta!

Technically you should be able to find and message me on the latest stable version too, but if not, use the beta.

I've also attached a QRCode you can scan in-app :)

If people can do this just with publically available data, you can guess what discord themselves - with much more data at their hands - can do.

https://www.404media.co/a-spy-site-is-scraping-discord-and-selling-users-messages/

archive.org is useful if you don't wanna create an account to read this.
