Folks who might be looking to move from Windows to Linux: another option, if it’s financially feasible for you and you don’t want to mess with installing Linux, is to sell your Windows machine and buy a Linux one.

Yep, they exist.

Folks like @starlabs in the UK, @tuxedocomputers in the EU, and @system76 in the US sell Linux machines that just work out of the box.

I too, would recommend silverblue or bluefin, they are especially good for non-developers and non-techies. To be clear, I write all my code on silverblue, but many developers and techies "know just enough to be dangerous".

If your computer has an nvidia GPU, I would definitely recommend bluefin over silverblue.

Finally, these two distro don't have the most intuitive installers, the buttons are pretty hard to find. I recommend you to find some installation videos online. In general you will leave all the option as default, except reclaiming the disk space from your old OS.

This is a nice touch on the Taipei Airport Metro. Wireless charging!

Unfortunately wireless charging is still terribly inefficient, and overheats like crazy. IMO it should probably only be used in an emergency.

This may be a stupid question but why do I have to manually save media that I got via to the gallery? I can see it in the chat even if I'm not connected to the internet, so it's clearly already saved somewhere.

czhang03,
@czhang03@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@realsimon
it is saved in the app sandbox, which is not accessible by other apps. Once you saved it in download, every app with access to download folder can access it.

So this more of a privacy/security feature.

czhang03,
@czhang03@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@realsimon
they don't need to download it, they can simply press the share button on the botton left of the image viewer.

czhang03,
@czhang03@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@realsimon
I don't think any app automatically save to galleries nowadays, no?

    It's interesting to see what impact (AI powered) bots will have in the next few years.

    Twitter has been made useless by bots because they allowed it. Youtube comments have been made useless by bots because they can't do much against them. Which network might be next?

    czhang03,
    @czhang03@mathstodon.xyz avatar

    @realsimon
    Google is already useless without specifically looking for couple trusted sites, rest is AI generated garbage. I suspect youtube product recommendation will likely be next.

    Today I learnt that it's difficult af to build metros in because it's so full of history that you can't dig a hole anywhere without coming across precious ancient relics and even whole villas of Latin senators.

    Big improvements are coming to cosmic-text that are already available in cosmic-edit: https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-text/pull/206

    This reduces memory usage and improves performance for large files significantly. Here is a 9 megabyte, 245,526 line file that can be fully syntax highlighted in about five seconds, and scrolls to any part of the file are instant. Memory usage is in line with other editors, if they can even load this file.

    @soller
    do you have plan to make cosmic text a competitor of IDE-like editor like vscode, or does it meant to be more like a notepad?

    I personally find there isn't much good alternative to vscode (or codium) in the realm of mouse friendly editor, and it is really frustrating.

    Why are so many useful words starts with S? "States", "Strings", "Sets", "Start State".

    How am I supposed to name these things?! Can we rename some of them to use W, U, X, Z, V or something?

    I don't want any more scandals, provocations, outcries, altercations, dramas or accusations.

    That's it, were done. Only wholesome stuff from now on. Negativity is hereby forbidden in the fediverse.

    No more 'omg did you hear what [evil politician] said today?' I only want you to show me the tomatoes you grew in your backyard. And I want to see pictures of your kittens. But that's it.

    @streetcomplete has been such a great companion for my short walks, commutes, and city hikes.

    It is an app (almost a game, I would say) that ask you about your surrounding environment to contribute to @openstreetmap, which is highly focused information that helps and .

    So it is basically a game that is more fun than pokemon go, helps our more vulnerable populations, and gives a finger to that attempts to monopolize public service for profit.

    What's not to like here?!

    The internet is amazing because sometimes when you ask a question in a forum you get ten confidently delivered bullshit answers but also one answer from a guy who happened to write their doctoral thesis in this very field and gives you a perfect, informative 10 paragraph answer.
