@siracusa some back catalog minutiae for you. Just listening to RecDiffs 226, at 59:10 you and @hotdogsladies can't recall where "pushin' a rope, pushin' a rope" with a familiar cadence came from. It immediately put me in mind of this clip from America's Funniest Home Videos with slightly different content. Saget delivers with the same cadence... https://web.archive.org/web/20201019040402/https:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4B-1uC0aD0&gl=US&hl=en

Plans got royally thrown for a loop this weekend. Ended up taking my dog to the groomers today instead of tomorrow. So now hitting up breweries closer to me than going in to Baltimore as originally planned.

Currently at Cushwa & Rad Pies trying a bunch of IPAs.

dandrumheller,
@dandrumheller@mstdn.social avatar

@gnitro Plans got a little tweaked for me this weekend as well. Led to a bit of free time in Providence RI. Long Live Beerworks was open…

dandrumheller,
@dandrumheller@mstdn.social avatar

@gnitro I struggle with barleywine. Had a couple I’ve liked, and quite a few I didn’t…but I’m very probably trying the wrong ones.

The beer was spectacular - I’d say they’re arguably top 3 in New England for modern hazy IPAs. And that’s a VERY crowded space here!

dandrumheller,
@dandrumheller@mstdn.social avatar

@gnitro I’ll just have to keep trying them - I’ll eventually find more I like!

Not much experience with MD breweries; hit up a couple around Dewey Beach in Delaware a couple years ago, and we did make it to Burley Oak - those were some amazing and outlandish beers!

@MonaApp ‘s ability to pin anything including hashtags like with a custom icon is so awesome.

@IceCubesApp can pin stuff on top but where’s my 🐱 icon ?

@santiago @MonaApp @IceCubesApp @moshidon @ivory @tootapp thanks for posting this, hadn't realized Mona could do this! Agree this would be a cool option in Ice Cubes, as it would require less scrolling in the pinned tags/lists.

@pejacoby @beersofmastodon this is the only one that might be able to unseat Guinness as a baseline stout for me.

Please excuse my heresy, I'll see myself out now...

dandrumheller,
@dandrumheller@mstdn.social avatar

@GregorDeBalzac @pejacoby @beersofmastodon I think I generally agree with you that left hand is objectively better than Guinness (though a closer contest for me). But when drinking other stouts, they still get the Guinness comparison in my head, not a left hand comparison 😆

You've inspired me to grab some LH next time I see it though!

dandrumheller,
@dandrumheller@mstdn.social avatar

@GregorDeBalzac @pejacoby @beersofmastodon I've tried the foreign extra stout a couple of times, and marginally prefer the draught. Agree they're quite distinct from each other.

It's time to address the elephant in the room, or actually Threads

As many of you may know Threads went live in Europe and with that they started testing federation with the Fediverse

At this point there is a choice to make

  1. Block Threads on instance level, that will take away the choice for each person

  2. Do not block and let people block if they want to(1 search and 2 clicks)

After much consideration and talks I think we need to go with option 2 and let people decide for themselves

dandrumheller,
@dandrumheller@mstdn.social avatar

@stux Glad to see this. I think you are making the right choice here.

I was cleaning out some boxes in my closet last weekend when I discovered I still had these phones.

Man, what a blast from the past.

@MishaalRahman This post inspired me to dig into my ‘drawer’. Historically was using Android as my daily until the release of iPhone 13 mini. A few have been either stolen or traded in along the way, but: HTC Aria, Moto E 2nd gen, Galaxy S6, Moto G Play, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S. The iPhones prior to the Xr were all inherited for specific uses. Xr is a work phone.

Last pics are first, biggest, current. Somebody please make me a modern full screen phone in an Aria form factor.

Random font appreciation post:

MonoLisa is my favorite monospace font and I use it everywhere https://www.monolisa.dev/

Futura Now is a modernized version of the classic and comes with tons of variants. This is the official font for ABC as well as headings on Birchtree https://www.monotype.com/fonts/futura-now

Atkinson Hyperlegible is a very legible and beautiful font I use on Birchtree for all body text https://brailleinstitute.org/freefont

SimpleBits has some great ones, but I love Cartridge https://simplebits.shop/collections/fonts/products/cartridge

Do I buy an adventure bike because I would love to ride from Prudhoe Bay to Ushuaia some day or do I just buy something that would be great for commuting to work and save $10k? I really want my next to be something like an Africa Twin but I don't want to look like a poser who is riding way more motorcycle than he needs.

dandrumheller,
@dandrumheller@mstdn.social avatar

@joe Don't worry about what other people think of what you ride. Ride what you want. If you want an Africa Twin and can afford it, get it. Put 90/10 tires on it.

Plenty of GS's out there that have never seen dirt - and that's ok - they're a pretty good all around riding platform.

I signed up for AP Chem in HS, because I loved math and did great in AP Physics.

It was a disaster.

The teacher was this creepy man who ignored my questions. All the students in the class had outside tutors and my mom was like "if you think you need a tutor take the regular science class" -- I could not make heads or tails of the homework. I lasted two weeks then transferred to Statistics and got teased all year for taking two math classes. (I would have cheerfully taken 3)

dandrumheller,
@dandrumheller@mstdn.social avatar

@futurebird Similar experience. Loved regular chem, had a great teacher. Signed up for AP chem with high hopes. Teacher was the only PhD in the whole school and apparently thought he was teaching college seniors rather than high school juniors. Suffered through, barely passed. Have hated chemistry since.

Took AP physics senior year, did fine and loved it.
