In academic papers, author initials are used for various purposes, like stating acknowledgements or COI, so I often have to help authors deal with the case where authors have overlapping initials.

I’d be interested to solve the following problem:

Given the frequency of each letter at the start of given names and surnames, how many authors must be listed to give a 50% probability that 2 of them will have the same initials.

I feel like the number is much smaller in Japanese than in English 🤔

@FlockOfCats I think you'll be basically running into a variant of the Birthday Paradox… Assuming you have ~30 people listed, your chances shoot up to near-certainty…

@jon I think the fact that Nice people all enthusiastically use flights, is a big part of the reason Marseille-Nice trains are such a joke…

deivudesu,
@deivudesu@mastodon.social avatar

@jon Oh sure. And that's true everywhere (cue comparison on prices etc).

But the fact Nice's population (and the people who tend to go there and around) is overwhelmingly affluent, coupled with the fact that Nice already has a massive well-connected airport (3rd biggest in France, iirc), has to be a big factor in the total absence of momentum toward a Marseille-Nice TGV…

deivudesu,
@deivudesu@mastodon.social avatar

@jon Paris-Nice could be a ~4h30 TGV… Very much competitive against flights.
Instead, it's a ~6+h ride → only the most committed will opt for that over a cheaper flight.

If you have sociopathic tendencies, you can live a content life torturing and killing small animals, and the odd hitchhiker. With some ambition, you might make it as a tech CEO.

But if you are a truly dedicated sociopath, you'll make your way to the engineering design office of a major shower appliance company, and you will insist on making the 'overhead'-'handheld' toggle automatically revert to 'overhead' between uses.

deivudesu,
@deivudesu@mastodon.social avatar

@jbqueru One branch per target is definitely chaotic evil.
Monorepo vs multi-repo is a debate as old as times. Personally think it's best informed by 1. what dev tools/IDE you use (some are better than others at dealing with monorepos) 2. how much common data/config/etc you might have 3. how your deployment/build toolchain works (and whether it'll suffer from either solution).

lmao one of those "box kit" companies just delivered someone else's meal to my house. It's weird because it has a name unrelated to anyone who lives here (and the name appears to be spelled wrong), but they have the correct address? But no one here has ever ordered a meal from this company.

I don't know why but I strongly suspect this is some AI nonsense

deivudesu,
@deivudesu@mastodon.social avatar

@sidereal @pluralistic Surprise reveal: the company is entirely created and managed by ChatGPT, which convinced a bunch of VPs to fund it, no humans are involved.

Also this Getlink press release about doubling of high speed services through the Channel Tunnel https://press.getlinkgroup.com/news/getlink-to-enable-the-doubling-of-direct-high-speed-rail-services-from-the-uk-over-the-next-10-years-via-the-channel-tunnel-8ee5-0791e.html

And then the statement says nothing about what Getlink is doing

What ARE they doing, other than corporate-bullshitting?

New signalling? Higher speeds? Lower headways?

WHAT can they even do, given they control just the tunnel, and all the constraints are elsewhere?

@jon On the BS Marketing-speak scale, this rank pretty high…

It’s OK to call it Artificial Intelligence: I wrote about how people really love objecting to the term "AI" to describe LLMs and suchlike because those things aren't actually "intelligent" - but the term AI has been used to describe exactly this kind of research since 1955, and arguing otherwise at this point isn't a helpful contribution to the discussion.

https://simonwillison.net/2024/Jan/7/call-it-ai/

deivudesu,
@deivudesu@mastodon.social avatar

@simon A reasonably pragmatic option. Unfortunately undercut by the efforts of a sizeable portion of the LLM crowd (including more than a few clowns at OpenAI) to present LLMs ("AI") as merely a few incremental improvements short of AGI.

I would go one step stronger and state that LLMs are not AGI, nor will they ever be. (I admit this is a controversial, and potentially risky, statement)

i was told people outside of germany don't know what a christmas pyramid is

so, behold

so it's like a thing with wings and candles and the warm air rising makes the whole thing spin???? sorry hard to explain

deivudesu,
@deivudesu@mastodon.social avatar

@pinkpenguin we definitely had a metal version of that as kids (not German, but who knows, maybe it came from there?)…
Not sure why it’d be called a pyramid though 🤨

deivudesu,
@deivudesu@mastodon.social avatar

@pinkpenguin that was in the UK (and considerably less elaborate: single level, 2-3 candles, metallic xmassy things rotating and hitting a small bell)… but I have no idea how traditional or universal that was…

deivudesu,
@deivudesu@mastodon.social avatar

@pinkpenguin come to think of it… having a candle operated device made of plywood sounds like a recipe for a very messy Xmas.

I'm riding a train in Europe today, in ideal conditions: no heavy luggage, no connection, within a single state. And it's magical.

While I continue to prefer flying for complex trips (because the airline industry knows how to handle complexity), in simple cases I can't imagine flying when there's a direct high-speed train.

deivudesu,
@deivudesu@mastodon.social avatar

@jbqueru Definitely not trying to start an argument, but kinda curious what you have in mind by "complex trips" that are better handled by airlines than trains (assuming we're not talking about distances and things like crossing oceans… 😅)

deivudesu,
@deivudesu@mastodon.social avatar

@jbqueru Ah ok. Yea, I think if we're throwing boats into the mix (and/or distances greater than ~1500km give or take), all bets are off.

On the train part across EU countries, it certainly could be a lot better (paging @jon), but it's surprisingly okayish between major cities (say, Milan to Paris… indeed when that tunnel is fixed).

deivudesu,
@deivudesu@mastodon.social avatar

@jbqueru Yea, I think luggage is where things can't even compare. I wonder if there's a market for some sort of service that will one day make it as seamless as plane (even on a single train ride, I know people who dread having to handle large suitcases, compared to airline checkin).

For connections, I find that nowadays, the vast majority of tickets are quite flexible, so it's not too painful to rebook on your own if there's a delay…

deivudesu,
@deivudesu@mastodon.social avatar

@jbqueru Quite frankly, I think you might be overestimating the amount of care you'll receive from airlines, especially on routes comparable to what we are talking about: taking a bunch of LCCs across Europe in 2024, is a far cry from regular airline tickets 10y ago.
Best you can hope, is some rather laborious system for rebooking (usually after hours of waiting and queuing), assuming all stars align…

deivudesu,
@deivudesu@mastodon.social avatar

@jbqueru But on intra-Europe routes, chances are high that you'll end up with LCCs somewhere along the way (or pay literally 2-3x the ticket price, for an equivalent "legacy" airline)… and those don't give two fucks about you and your missing connections 😉
