I'm really hoping you don't need me to tell you that using machine learning ("AI") systems to identify potential targets and then to suggest that they be targeted when at home with their family members, including children, is one of the most abhorrent, unethical, inhumane things I've ever seen. @CatherineFlick @Precis While I agree that using AI this way and killing families is abhorrent, these systems are almost literally a reflection of humanity. I’m not convinced the problem lies with the technology.

@6G @paninid @atomicpoet @samxavia I love the Mastodon community, but there are some extremely vocal people who don’t quite grasp the concept of decentralization: they seem to want to control what everyone can see.

Don’t want to see Threads or BlueSky? Fine, block them. Do it at your account level, or at the server level if you’re an admin. But trying to block them from the Fediverse as a whole is just gross.

@atomicpoet @paninid @samxavia @6G Exactly this is what brought me to Mastodon in the first place: every user and server is their own gatekeeper and you always have the option to run your own server however you want. Without this feature, why even join Mastodon or the Fediverse?

I can’t escape the feeling that folks calling for global bans on one thing or another have utterly missed the point.

I’m starting to realize that Mastodon may have ruined other social media for me. Just deleted Reddit - even the (relatively) low levels of dbags and other annoyances there are just more than I need in my life anymore.

Why put up with all the illiteracy, infantilism, and general idiocy when I can just enjoy myself and learn things on the Fediverse?

@ColinTheMathmo @andrewt I’m still grappling with what the concept of matter as “condensed” energy actually means - still have some mental heavy lifting to do with that.

The idea of potential energy is interesting. Does it only exist in the presence of a gravitational field? That would suggest it’s not a property of the object but rather of the system created by the object and whatever creates the gravity. And is potential energy directional?

@zdl Great for you I guess. Not sure how any of that actually solves anything, unless you’re advocating for outlawing personal automobiles and forcing people to use public transit at gunpoint, because in the real world that’s what you’d have to do to make an immediate transition. (1/2)
