Hey @webcomictalk can you help me to gave a little question some reach ?

Which writing exercise or scenario would you recommend to quickly develop the characters personalities ?

Eclipse Day: The Eclipse Itself (1/3)

The eclipse started okay. But the longer it went on, the thicker the clouds got. Sadly, just before totality, the clouds straight up hid the show, and didn't let up until hours and hours later.

But we had a nice dark four minutes of totality darkness. I'm okay with that. That was @#$(&ing magical.

Welcome to , the Fediverse discussion hashtag. This week's top is "Crossovers" and we have five questions over five days.

Question One: "What is your stance on crossovers in webcomics? Do they add to or detract from a story?"

Please feel free to answer the question whenever you see it. Consider boosting and using the hashtag to spread the discussion around.

dolari,
@dolari@driveinsaturday.org avatar

@webcomictalk - I've done two crossovers in my Closetspace comic, one major, one minor. The minor one was simply having an angel character from my A Wish for Wings Comic appear in my Closetspce Comic.

The major one, though, was a crossover with Venus Envy. This was planned between me and VE's creator Erin Lindsey/Crystal Frasier to be one where we both worked on each others comics, however, it ended up only being my side of the crossover getting done (although with her permission and supervision of her characters).

What was important, though, was that the corssover HAD to do two things: (1) it it had to further my story and (2) my main story had to make sense WITHOUT the crossover in case I ended up not being able to reprint the VE characters in book form. I think I managed on both counts, and while the story makes sense without the crossover, it makes better sense with it. But that's what's important.

Having the crossover is great and all, but in the end, it has to service the story and not just be a crossover for crossover's sake.

I never did find out what Erin/Crystal had in mind for my her character living in my character's world, other than she got a tattoo on her arm that said "Mario" and was wearing a bee costume by the end of her side of the adventure.

Huh, it wasn't until Target Audience mentioned it, that I noticed this is the one shot in Star Trek with ALL the series regulars in one shot.

You have the main seven up front, but in the background you have Grace Lee Whitney's Janice Rand and Majel Barrett's Nurse Chapel, just behind Kirk.

Mark Lenard's Sarek is there, too, as he's as much a movie regular as any of the others.

Hey @webcomictalk can you help me to find tips on how to gracefully integrate a lot of text (Specifically code and computer outputs) on a comic?

I'm planning to make some programming tutorials on comic format and code and outputs are kinda a necessity for that

Thanks

dolari,
@dolari@driveinsaturday.org avatar

@hashraydamon @webcomictalk - I had two episodes that I needed to hae a sit-down conversation with the characters, twice.

Each time, I didn't want to just draw faces over and over again, so I drew an "establishing" shot, and then text below. It worked pretty well.

Warning: Comic Spoilers....

I've had a very bad day of my brain beating me up mentally. Very bad day.

I don't talk about this much, but I struggle with depression pretty badly, and some days, like today, it wins. If you know someone dealing with depression, give them a pat on the back, or a big hug, whatever they feel comfortable with.

It can be rough out here.

Question for the bakers out there.

I've been trying to make cinnamon rolls for a while now, and except for one time, they've all come out like this...where the rolls swell, but only at the bottom and they come out less like rolls and more like "mounds."

Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong here? The bread is good, and the rolls are tasty...they're just shaped badly.

Advice?

One hour of rising in a warm oven later they're puffing up, but are starting to flare out only at the bottom.
After a full bake, they're larger again, but definitely more swole at the bottom than at the top making for mound looking rolls.

Please include the hashtag and boost the prompt to invite more creators into the discussion. You can answer these prompts whenever you see them, even weeks after they are posted. We'll boost your responses.

@webcomictalk

I never liked open ended comics because there was never really much of a satisfying solution to the stories they were telling - they always dovetailed into the next thread.

So when I started my comics, I was very big on "I will have the whole story in my head before I do comic #1."

Closetspace (http://dolari.net/cs) is fairly rigidly plotted, and its following that plot very closely.

"A Wish for Wings" (http://dolari.net/awfw) was less rigidly plotted, and more of an outline that I would follow, but aiming towards an ending. In fact, we HIT that ending in episodes and 104 (no pun iuntended).

That said, AWFW continued because, on the way to that ending, a sequel appeared in my head. That sequel was originally called "A Harp Within My Hand" but instead of making a new comic, I simply extended the story. Harp Within My Hand was also completely outlined before I weaved it into the comic.

This Week's Fancy Pants Meal: Seafood Marinara.

It's bad folks. Like REALLY bad. Ooof. And I LOVE seafood.

dolari,
@dolari@driveinsaturday.org avatar

@kkarhan - I worried that the recipe didn't have any "season to taste." So I seasoned it. And it didn't take. And did it again. And it didn't take. Eventually I got worried about the amount of salt going into it. Eventually I just stopped cooking it, and servied it up, thinking "I'll salt it when I eat it if it needs more."

And when I ate a full spoonful, it still wasn't salty, even with romano cheese sprinkled on it. Instead it was incredibly bitter tasting tomato.

I'm guessing "tomato paste" might mean something different wherever this was printed and it should have beeen "tomato puree" or something "tomato sauce." Either way, it tastes horrible and was a disservice to the seafood.

Just a heads up to any trans folks needing to get on Washington State's Apple Health care.

When you apply, there is an entry on the application (https://www.hca.wa.gov/assets/free-or-low-cost/18-001P.pdf) that specifically asks for your Sex Assigned At Birth.

Before filling this in, please note that Washington's Health Care Authority's Transhealth program (https://www.hca.wa.gov/free-or-low-cost-health-care/i-need-medical-dental-or-vision-care/transhealth-program) states that, unless you need reproductive care, you do not need to put in your sex assigned at birth.

Only if you need reproductive care are you required to put in the sex assigned at birth.

This caused some issues with my healthcare as all my physicians and pharmacists have me listed as female but because I didn't know I could put down female on the form, cause a ton of headaches with insurance, and a lot of phone calls to get that set right.
