Could we automatically add every track from @ccreleases to a streaming station? Then we'd need to add up/down voting as one listens and see that output on a site somewhere.

edinburgh_man,
@edinburgh_man@mastodon.scot avatar

@wjmaggos @ccreleases One of the problems is that it's too automated! It relies on uploaders correctly tagging albums on Bandcamp. I sometimes spot clearly non CC releases (eg DJ remixes) and I filter out releases that contain tracks by some well known non CC artists), but things regularly slip through. Also if an artist uploads a whole discography it can flood the stream - I need to do some work to mitigate that. I don't keep on top of this bot as much as I should! Life things, etc.

I found an eBay listing that is looking to charge a huge sum of money for a Kickstarter the seller isn’t anything to do with and that’s not due for over a year. It annoyed me, so I reported it.

eBay’s response: “We looked into your report and didn’t find the listing to be in violation of our policy. This determination was made using automation or artificial intelligence.”

Last time I bother doing that, then.

edinburgh_man,
@edinburgh_man@mastodon.scot avatar

@craiggrannell But.... "Presale listings must guarantee that the item will be posted within 40 days of purchase". 🤔

Went to get an external monitor. And it seemed that 27 inches was the most common size. So I thought fine, that'll do. And it turns out 27 inches is HUGE. And the stand was so deep that the monitor was right in my face, so I had to mount it on the wall, which naturally required drilling a ton of holes because I must have kept finding the mortar between the bricks. Anyway, this is going to take some getting used to.

I don’t know how big partworks are outside of the UK and Ireland. But they always make me a bit twitchy. I mean, I don’t want a 1:2 scale Dalek anyway. But I can’t imagine spending well over two years hoping the publisher wouldn’t go belly up and leave you with half a Dalek. (Book partworks are a bit less risky, obvs. But even then, it can be frustrating. Eg Eaglemoss went under and left a Batman collection incomplete.) https://downthetubes.net/hachette-partworks-launches-dalek-part-work/

edinburgh_man,
@edinburgh_man@mastodon.scot avatar

@craiggrannell Now if it was a 1:1 scale Dalek...

edinburgh_man,
@edinburgh_man@mastodon.scot avatar

@craiggrannell Yeah. I always wonder about the production of these. Like how many issues 1s do they make vs issue 100? A couple of years ago they did a series of Bob Dylan vinyls, and I was sort of tempted. Until I figured I could probably just buy the handful of Dylan albums I wanted off discogs for much less.

Major thing to note about the Unreal licensing terms is that they don't apply to . Nothing really changing for us.

Even other industries, the per seat only kicks in if you're over a million in revenue. https://www.theverge.com/2024/3/12/24098279/epic-unreal-engine-pricing-plan-non-game-developers-twinmotion-realitycapture

This Pulp song has a template for making a speed wrap on the cover... A gag that me and my mates thought would be great for our indie club (called Speeder) flyers. So we handed them out in pubs and the like. The bar managers were not happy when they realised.

Amazon: delists Emulation Station emulator front-end for Android, citing that it’s used for piracy.

Also Amazon: happily lists actual standalone emulators as apps you can buy.

Also also Amazon: merrily allows people to sell entire hard drives full of actual pirated games.

edinburgh_man,
@edinburgh_man@mastodon.scot avatar

@craiggrannell That's wild. If you just search for "retro games console" on Amazon you get a plethora of good, mediocre and terrible devices that are preinstalled with pirated software. Not "can be used for piracy", but items for sale that contain straight up pirated software.

I also feel the need to apologise to anyone who may have follwed me due to my tooting, because the music I play is probably a bit different...

GreyAreaUK, to retrocomputing
@GreyAreaUK@mastodon.social avatar

I could use some recommendations for connecting old computers/consoles to modern TVs/monitors. In other words, something that can take the output from the retro device (be it SCART, Composite, potentially RF) and convert it into HDMI.

Any ideas? There's a few things out there but (for instance) a lot of the SCART->HDMI won't do digital RGB, which is a must.

Needs to be off-the-shelf sadly, my electronics construction skills are…not great 😊

Many thanks.

edinburgh_man,
@edinburgh_man@mastodon.scot avatar

@GreyAreaUK @peter I have an OSSC. Had it for 5 years or so. It's good but not without shortcomings. There are better albeit more expensive options now. It only supports RGB SCART, VGA and component. No RF, composite or svideo. https://videogameperfection.com/products/open-source-scan-converter/

edinburgh_man,
@edinburgh_man@mastodon.scot avatar

@GreyAreaUK @peter Aside from lack of built in composite/svideo support, the default generic profile can be a bit blurry and to get pixel perfect results you need to dial in quite detailed settings for phase etc manually for each input device and resolution. Also when the input resolution changes (e.g. pause screens in Silent Hill in PS1 that are 576i vs 240p gameplay) there is a noticeable pause of multiple seconds as it resyncs. Saturn games in particular seem to do this a lot.

@EighthLayer What do you reckon would be an appropriate age rating for this? As soon as my eldest gets wind of it he's going to be asking me to chuck him a few quid on top of the Steam voucher he got for Christmas! However the "Pokemon with guns" description and something I read about gutting penguins with a knife sounds like it may not be suitable!

Back in the distant past these were listener voted, but nowadays... well... That's too much effort. So I decided on this chart. A top 25 in 90 minutes. Thankfully, not much chat from me!

Ok, scene ripper fan DB types, apparently we get another season count reboot with the next doctor, so I'm begging you:

can we pleeaaase stop putting the seasonal and special episodes into a gigantic s00? 😭 let's just put them into whatever the most recent season was thank you 😭

(in the same way we've been watching Season 1-13 of Doctor who 2005 cus of that reboot, next season is going to be Doctor Who 2024 Season 1)

@glassbottommeg Urgh. Yeah, I spent quite some time manually moving the Christmas and NY specials into the end of the in prior seasons, and nuking S0 on my Plex server. You can now put extras into seasons if you follow some weird naming convention.

I get the impression (not sure how fair this is) that Amazon is far more powerful in the US than the UK. I haven’t yet received the upsell email. I do wonder if it’s coming here and in what form – and how Brits would respond. (Notable that Disney+ did not force a price rise in the UK. It offered that or a downgrade. So the old pricing remains but for HD rather than 4K, and fewer simultaneous streams.)
