Tonight I'm backing all my data up and moving the hell off of Arch.

I'm using my tool Backup Buddy and while it works good, idk what I was thinking when I coded it.

There's scripts to build (it's js, why??) and test (there's no freaking tests!) but no scripts or instructions on how to run the stupid thing.

Ugh I write such boneheaded stuff sometimes.

Ah Mastodon, it never fails. Whenever I point out somewhere else to follow or join, there's always replies telling me how much they don't want it or don't want to see it.

egeexyz,
@egeexyz@mastodon.social avatar

@gamingonlinux it's not Mastodon, I think it's the tech community in general. What you are describing is exactly why I've grown my audiences separate from my tech channel.

"I don't want to see it!"

Then.. doing fucking look at it? Idk, people need to grow up.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again:

Every docker, portainer, nextcloud, container-ish tutorial on the internet makes HUGE effing assumptions about what the student knows going in. I've found so few that actually assume the reader/viewer knows nothing. It makes it really hard to get into it all when you do in fact know nothing.

egeexyz,
@egeexyz@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxcast My Dad is teaching himself Blender and we talked about this in regarding tutorials.

I think there's a lot of showboating when people say "oh just do this thing" and they use a macro or some cheat to make it easier.

I think there's also a lot of self-taught people who make tutorials but really only know that one single way of doing it but don't understand why it works, if that makes sense.

I did a DistroDelve for the new Ubuntu 24.04 release.

I looked at Ubuntu Mate to get a better idea of what a good polished Mate desktop looks like! https://youtu.be/_XemvaO6rco

I've been pondering content licensing when it comes to AI dataset training.

I think I might write my own license that is similar to Creative Commons for art but with a GPL-like clause that says if you do use my content for AI, you must open source the entire data set.

It's a win-win because they are going to scrape and use my content but they also signed up for some dastardly legal issues ala copyleft 😈. And also, FOSS FTW!

Microsoft says it’s starting to test ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11. The software maker will use the Recommended section of the Start menu, which usually shows file recommendations, to suggest apps from the Microsoft Store. Trillion dollar corporation is so poor. They need more money by selling your data to the highest bidder. wtf? https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/12/24128640/microsoft-windows-11-start-menu-ads-app-recommendations

egeexyz,
@egeexyz@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft Honestly if I was a big shareholder, I'd be PISSED about this.

If it was really this easy all along, there's been money just sitting on the table and nobody thought to reach into it until now.

I'm unsurprised by this development but serious about the shareholder thing. Like why did they wait until now to put adds in the start menu?

Since switching to Arch/Hobby Linux, my laptop went from 3 hours to over 6 hours on battery.

I have no idea why though. Hobby Linux is kinda just a barebones Arch install with Mate lol.

So I guess, why do other distros have such terrible battery life on this laptop?

egeexyz,
@egeexyz@mastodon.social avatar

@danirabbit I wonder - does stored memory increase power consumption?

Would a machine consuming 1gb of memory at idle have the same energy consumption as an identical machine consuming 8gb? I have a theory...

It's so interesting to watch YouTube recommend me stuff like this. Nameless gaming videos uploaded from console or direct from capture card app with 2 views from a channel with 100 subscribers. Just a year or so ago, this kind of recommendation would have been unimaginable.

egeexyz,
@egeexyz@mastodon.social avatar

@EposVox Is the discourse that this is a bad thing?

Personally I've discovered a ton of new channels this way. Some of the channels I watch weekly still only get a few dozen or maybe 100 views but imo it's good niche content.

Ugh, the AI subscription wars have begun! This reminds me of the streaming service subscription wars. Do I really need to pick my favorite robot overlord? Let's break down the damage:

$20 of Claude AI
$20 ChatGPT
$20 Gemini Advanced
$20 Copilot Pro
$20 Cursor
$20 Perplexity

Anyone else feeling the AI FOMO? Are you paying for the ai/robot service? That is what I wanna know 🤔

egeexyz,
@egeexyz@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft I use some AI as little assistants with questions like "about how long will it take for me read the above piece?" or as a super-powered search engine.

I do believe there's monetary value, but not $20 a pop.

I'd use Gemini as part of Google One, for example but $20? Yeah, it's not quite that valuable.

I wouldn't want it to be worth $20, either. AI is an augmentation on tools we already have. It's not as revolutionary as founders want you to believe, imo.

Stop. Recommending. Tiny. Random. Linux. Distros.

Please. It's a never ending source of support issues. Especially for newer users. Get them onto something easy like Ubuntu.

egeexyz,
@egeexyz@mastodon.social avatar

@gamingonlinux Hot take but a lot of tiny distros just suck.

Bless the developers for working their best on it but they gotta stop saying their distro is for "New Users" when it hardly works.

I'd name drop like 6 distros off the top of my head right now but I think most people are aware of them.

It's ok to be a fun boutique power-user distro. Not everything has to be about the newbies

Question: The process of layoffs always seems so rushed and chaotic. But, if you’re laid off from a dev or IT job, can you negotiate your severance package? Any tips? Is it possible?

egeexyz,
@egeexyz@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft You can always try but remember they have no reason to pay you.

When I asked for severance, the HR Director said "we won't contest your unemployment claim". And they didn't so I guess there's that.

OpenAI suspends ByteDance’s account after it used GPT to train its own AI model: Isn't it hypocritical to use the copyrighted work of others without permission but deny others the same opportunity? OpenAI scraped the entire Internet but is now acting holier than thou.
https://www.theverge.com/2023/12/15/24003542/openai-suspends-bytedances-account-after-it-used-gpt-to-train-its-own-ai-model OpenAI can train on various data types such as text, images, books & videos without permission, but competitors can not access it once it's in their system. So, yes, it is a problematic version of copyright

So real talk - what is to gain from preordering Apple devices? Is it really just so you can get the device first or is there another reason I'm not seeing?

Scarcity and supply is totally artificial so it's not a "while supplies last".

Preorders. I just do not get it. The way I see it, it's akin to gambling. People preordering, like, can't seem to say No to it. It's so very odd.

egeexyz,
@egeexyz@mastodon.social avatar

@danirabbit I'm glad more people are beginning to talk about this!! I'm beginning to think preorders (scams) need their reckoning the way loot boxes got theirs.

Heyoo ~ did you know that I have a store now? It's not one of those all-in-one merch shops, I built it from scratch with Shopify & Printify!

Last month, I taught myself how to use and build an online storefront with Shopify, and setup fulfilment for dropshipping with Printify.

I'm switching my websites to Wordpress so I looked into Woocommerce too but Shopify integrates directly into YouTube, which is SUPER cool!

It also has the best domain name ever -> https://egee.shop/

egeexyz,

I still love the idea of doing videos about tech things like Shopify and Wordpress.

I've seriously considered writing "Technical Product Manager Egee" as a way to channel my IRL expertise into a fun character that people can enjoy from a different perspective.

I think it could be fun!
