Well, that was a blast from the past!

Just watched the old 80s SciFi movie "Battle Beyond the Stars". I came across it while browsing recommendations on streaming.

There is a SciFi movie I watched on TV as a kid, early 80s, that I've been looking for, and I think this is the one. The listed Norwegian title on IMDB seems to match what I remember too.

It's actually quite enjoyable too. Pretty average overall, but a nice watch for a lazy Saturday. 😊

The Andromeda Galaxy is barreling towards use due to begin merging with the Milky Way in a few billion years. From an outside observer, that process would look like this new picture captured by the Gemini South Observatory. This is NGC 7727, a peculiar galaxy in the constellation Aquarius, about 90 million light-years away. Two giant spiral galaxies are merging, their gravitational interactions hurling giant tidal tails of stars into the cosmos.

The worst thing about online learning is that everything has become a video. Every code tutorial. Every design tutorial. Nobody actually writes out a guide anymore.

It's just "hey guys welcome to my tutorial" and watching 10 minutes of content that mostly isn't relevant...

My Atomic Rockets articles are built from association of related facts.

My morning reading just gave me a new article.

Ever since Asimov's Foundation a scifi staple is the Decline and Fall of the Galactic Empire. And the birth of the next Empire out of the ashes of the Long Night dark ages.

So I have a section on recovery from the dark ages. Trying to bootstrap your way back to high tech infrastructure. Including insurance that will shorten the long night

Mastodon mass-mind, please come to my aid!

I have a very vague memory of something I saw on TV in the 1970s or so, and I am looking for an image of it.

It was apparently a somewhat odd looking spaceship, with what looked like Greek writing on the side. It was a physical model, not a cartoon. I think it was in an episode of Carl Sagan's Cosmos.

The implication was that if the Dark Ages had not occurred, mankind would have been visiting the planets a thousand years ago.

Familiar?

All of these should be in schools as well as Cosmos (the original one by Carl Sagan and the following ones by Neil deGrasse)

As if I didn't have enough project already I just got the idea of using or the for some or -style game.

Made me look into Cepheus for the first time, which made me realize it is not actually a pared down MgT but a variation of Classic.

Which means it is missing the best part of MgT: the life path character generation system.
That was the part that really interested me in Traveller, and which my players loved.

Somebody has a question about a book. From the description, I want to read it:

"few years ago I read a book … yellow cover with … Mayan. Discussed linguistic history, writing, and the creation of writing systems across the world. Described how our eyes are attuned to specific shapes and that influenced the styles of alphabets.

"I think a woman wrote it, and it was relatively recent. Not an academic textbook or anything, but something meant for the common person."

I was rather active back on Google+ back in the day (and I am a bit miffed that Google ended it one week before I started my Patreon campaign).

And the one feature I truly miss are the "Collections". Basically, you could assign each of your posts to a single Collection you've defined. For example, I created the following Collections (among others):

  • "RPG" (tabletop role-playing games)
  • "Politics"
  • "Deutsch" (German-language posts)
  • "Science"

and so forth. And those who followed me could choose whether to follow my entire stream, or only specific collections. Someone who wasn't interested in Politics could unsubscribe to these posts. Someone who could not read German could thus not have my German-language posts show up in their stream - and so forth.

This was an amazing feature for keeping the signlal-to-noise ratio high in people's streams. And I would love it if someone implemented a -based approach for this - but I am not sure if would even support such a subdivision.

EDIT: @sl007 pointed out that this feature IS, in fact, part of the ActivityPub standard and thus could be implemented on the Fediverse - but apparently, no one has done so yet. Read the following for the details:
