So I bought the laptop I had back in 1999, a Vaio N505X. Unfortunately, it came without recovery CDs, and I could only find an ISO for the N505VX. Apparently that won’t work - grumble. Anyone have it by chance? I’d be very grateful. Boosts welcome

Its a fairly niche post, but a good LLM like GPT-4 is a godsend for configuring all things . I can get all the things working that were previously out of reach, in minutes. dap-debug with typescript -> check, python -> check. Awesome! Now i just need an adequate LLM that runs on a fat (X)PU locally at low wattage, and i know thats around the corner or already launched. Amazing times we live in.

@kaffeeringe spannend. Gibts darüber noch mehr Details? Würde das gern weiter verfolgen. In meiner Vergangenheit hat Nocode (ohne Error Checks, Security, Versioning, etc) für viel Chaos gesorgt.

Dare I say, my Amiga1200 is hardware complete now. Applied the “ESCOM floppy fix”, now the Gotek works, full fat 68060, PCMCIA network reliable on first boot, Indivision works too. Next up: fresh install of 3.2.x

@SinclairSpeccy yea i know. I got it alongside a working TT030 though, and wanted to inspect it. It's not doing anything for now... if i could get it to work, i would attempt to retrobright it.

what would you recommend for selfhosted music (and maybe other media) streaming server? jellyfin? funkwhale?

emanuel,

@mntmn I like Navidrome. Simple setup, works great for me. On iOS I use Substreamer as a client. Flawless.

Every time i receive a cold call on my business number, regardless of what people say who they are, i fear to speak to them at all - all they may want to do is create a voice profile for impersonation. Any creative solutions to this? Some simple hardware voice fuzzer you can hold to the microphone?

For those new here from to may I suggest @FediFollows as well as @feditips. If you’re interested in running your own server I personally use @mastohost for managing my service, simple to setup and pay them, been using them for months and it’s cheaper than Twitter blue for many individuals, but inexpensively can scale if you become more popular as I have been. Enjoy your time tooting posts away

This might be a loaded question given my audience. But what are you all considering the ‘best’ general purpose desktop Linux distribution at the moment?

I’d like for a moment, if we can, to drop the tribalism, the evangelism etc. and try to be as objective as possible. Even if it pains you to say X distro has some really nice features that your current favourite doesn’t.

I run Windows, MacOS, Ubuntu, SUSE, Debian, Solaris, and RHEL frequently. I once ran a distro per week for a whole year, so I’ve seen some things. I have no horse in this race.

MacOS Classic (68k/PPC) - I have so far neglected most on the platform, despite having the hardware and OS. Any suggestions for top gaming experiences to check out, despite the very obvious (Marathon, classic LucasArts, Civilization, SimCity) ? Would be thrilled to get some suggestions, as I don’t know the library of games.

There is something distinctively relaxing playing Gameboy games on a Sunday in direct sunlight. Better than most other - F1 Race, on Gameboy Light, on some North Sea dyke.

Gameboy Light (with light turned off) has a pretty crisp contrast in direct sunlight. Unfortunately the smartphone camera is not able to sync to the refresh of the screen, so please ignore faded parts.
