Assistant Professor of Science, Technology, & Society (STS) at Farmingdale State College-SUNY. My research is in critical theory and philosophy of technoscience, more continental than analytic. Outside of that, I write across genres and make music. Mostly I post about the work I do and music I like. I live in NYC

Scope creep:

"No no, these recordings are only for student use."
also, "aaannnd now we'll use them against you in an HR dispute".

I suspect @davidthewid might have had a more embodied response. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/faculty-issues/academic-freedom/2024/05/20/letter-says-unc-chapel-hill-secretly-records

would appreciate boosts! thanks

Columbia's student-run radio has good live coverage of what's going on up there, wkcr 89.9 fm. Mario just got back from there, he said there are unverified reports that cops are moving into Hamilton Hall (the occupied building)

Chaoting posting and reposting within the last 90 mins, lol. I am thinking about the role of Silicon Valley proto-fascism in sparking or reinforcing leftist critiques of #AI which (I'll die on this hill) rarely sufficiently address the positive applications (e.g. for medical research)

emma,
@emma@assemblag.es avatar

@PaulGrahamRaven There's so much porousness btwn the many applications called AI — generative models that yield nonsense can be used for more valid medical purposes, too — so I think that one term may be suitable as an umbrella for all of them. Just not "artificial intelligence" — mostly because it wrongly evokes humanness but also because there's a history of programs called "AI" that don't at all work like what we have today. I guess "automated pattern detection" doesn't have the same ring

picked up my work-appointed laptop last week. i didn't have much choice in the specs. it's a 15 inch HP, intel core i5, 8th gen w/ half as much RAM as the laptop i've been borrowing from NYU (long story) since June 😭

i am an unapologetic mac person, no patience for arguments about the superiority of machines. i would just buy myself a new mac, but they are expensive. should i do it anyway? is there a way to get a good working w/o paying >1k?

@Bellingcat 's interview with Jason Stanley about his book "How Fascism Works" could be part of a Fascism 101 course:

https://rss.com/podcasts/bellingcatstagetalk/1058997/

Also recommend John Ganz's "It's Official (You Can Use That Word)" about the use of the word "fascism:"

https://www.unpopularfront.news/p/its-official

and if you get to that, his latest post, which is about the issues with #Substack and Nazism. Ganz is an anti-fascist Jewish political thinker who needs Substack for income:

People who have written books: what software tools would you recommend? Word processing, citation, file management, etc.

I wrote my doctoral dissertation in Google Docs and did the citations manually, but a change might be good.

I understand why New Yorkers are annoyed with the profusion of grey-market cannabis shops ... but ... when I walk past any of these stores, I feel their cultural anomalousness, and I really like it. It's not novelty — it's not me getting a kick out of the everydayness of legal recreational weed...

emma,

Pot phenomenology is irreducibly strange. Its effects tend to defy the routinization and deadening effects of workday life. It feels like the institution of the headshop slipped in from a different economic and social order, one that can actually countenance inwardness and the non-standard, and somehow managed to stay in ours without betraying its alien idiosyncrasies. ..

emma,
@emma@assemblag.es avatar

I hate to romanticize (anything), and this is especially weird since I can't smoke pot without having a mini nervous breakdown... but the strangeness I'm describing isn't something to shrug off. There's something to it that's worth articulating. It has to do with the ideas of acid communism & aesthetic alienation. I'm not going to be able to describe it usefully in short-form writing. This thread is the kind of thing I usually just put in a Google doc but it's fun to write about drugs in public

I'm teaching a course called "Scientific Thinking" that's more or less Philosophy of Science meets Science Studies for students w/ no prior exposure to either field. ISO a good movie to show my students- could be a documentary, doesn't have to be- if it's not about science generally it should lend itself to social sci/humanities-inflected discussions exploring, e.g., history; epistemology; social/ cultural/ political dimensions of science etc.

thank you!

In case it's not clear: for the first 2 weeks- until 12/4- applications are restricted to FSC employees (union rules). After that, anyone can apply. Deadline is 12/31.

FSC is located on central Long Island. Some faculty live here & some commute by car or train from NYC. I am an NYC train commuter.

I'm happy to answer questions- stamme@farmingdale.edu.

Thanks for circulating :)

I would've given up on psychedelic experience as a research interest a long time ago if there weren't a social/ethical dimension to it. I'm still thinking about what can be done to increase the likelihood that one day, lots of people will be able to safely use these substances and — crucially — have their interpretations of the experience acknowledged and supported w/o fear of inciting moral panic or ridicule (for being a silly hippie or escapist or whatever). #psychedelics

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum just announced their US tour dates for next year! They are really the single most creative & interesting music project I've ever come across & that's saying a lot! All of their members are involved in tons of different projects & I never thought they'd tour again! If you've never heard them I would recommend starting w/ "Of Natural History." "Gunday's Child" is great.

Sorry for writing this like I'm 12 & that there's no alt text here. The NYC show is 3/18/24

In the last 10 years I've had to regularly commute in & out of #NYC from:

various locations in the Hudson Valley (Poughkeepsie, Rosendale, High Falls);

northern New Jersey (Bayonne);

the suburbs of Philly;

Long Island —currently I take the LIRR between Woodside, Queens & Farmingdale 3-4 days a week.

This has mostly been via public transit. I'm not kidding when I say Grand Central Terminal feels more like home than any other definite location.

present location: Poughkeepsie 😎

emma,

I'm not sure this post has much of a point. Maybe it's an NYC transit #AMA

emma,

@skyfaller I've tried but mostly it's been too hard. Streets bad for biking (I came very close to what probably would've been a lethal encounter with a car once), trains bad for carrying bikes, plus I've generally had jobs with dress codes unfriendly to proper bike gear. All of these are solvable issues..
