Why the fuck does Patreon reload while scrolling as I hit the bottom on a creator’s feed? Even if it’s a web page pretending to be a real application, how many things they’ve posted and their approximate size should be a single fucking query away! Give me a real goddamn scroll bar!

Because I was a band nerd and clarinet fingerings got hardwired into my hands in 5th & 6th grades, I have Yamaha WX-7 and WX-5 wind controllers as well as the Yamaha VL-70m woodwind simulating tone generator and MIDI adapter. I went to play the WX-7 tonight and the VL-70m doesn’t recognize it, which turns out to be a symptom of something familiar: Fucking 47µF SMT electrolytic capacitors in need of replacement!

I really wish there was an intact version of TI Explorer 6.1 sources online somewhere. I’ve been trying to figure out how to get my MicroExplorer running 6.1 to connect to a namespace server running on Symbolics Genera 8. (It’s probably a simple patch once I figure out where it needs to go, but that’d be much easier with known-good sources.)

Every time I see some well-meaning folks advocating "tax the rich!!" I wonder, why not think big and abolish money instead?

Money isn't merely a symptom of poverty, as Iain Banks pointed out: money creates poverty—there's a potentially infinite supply of money generated by allocating debts and issuing credit, but only certain people are permitted to accumulate it.

We need a better resource allocation system; "tax the rich" is a sticking plaster prescribed for a heart attack.

I guess this is how does these days.

First they require in-person , then they relocate business units from one location to another, and force those who can’t uproot their lives to leave.

The Apple location in isn’t going away. But they intentionally forced 121 people to choose between moving to , or lose their jobs. Make no mistake, this is a layoff.

Never mind the fact that is hostile to anyone with a uterus, or is not cishet—why the hell anyone would move to that state? If anything, Apple should be shutting down their Austin office, and paying for people to relocate to a state that better ensures their safety.

@vkoskiv Say, I just found MacNTP while looking for an NTP solution for my Mac IIx running System 6! Thanks! I haven’t been able to build it yet, have you considered committing DeRezzed versions of the projects too? (That should be able to round-trip a THINK C 5 project with objects removed.)

eschaton,
@eschaton@mastodon.social avatar

@vkoskiv Yeah, it’s kind of amazing what people were willing to put up with back in the day. :) MPW was widely used for a reason… One tweak that could be useful is using a third Rez file to combine the built cdev and INIT into the extension file, so you’d have a cdev project, an INIT project, and a Rez file that builds the deployable extension.

eschaton,
@eschaton@mastodon.social avatar

@vkoskiv It’d also be good for the Rez files to be fully-decompiled resources, since type info exists for most of them it’s just a matter of informing DeRez so it does the right thing when you want to check in changes to the resources. It’ll make diffs clearer for one thing.

“The United States is so big and geographically diverse that—“ shut up. China is sufficiently similar to the US in terms of size, geography, and population distribution that all the bullshit arguments about how what worked in Europe won’t work here are fully disproven as the auto-industry propaganda they always have been.

eschaton,
@eschaton@mastodon.social avatar

@clarko High-speed rail naysayers have claimed for decades that the reason rail works in Europe but won't work in the US is that cities are closer together and the geography is very different. China and the US are more similar in those areas, disproving this argument (which is really auto-industry lobbyist bullshit).

I wish Ghidra had just slightly better 68000 support—as in, support for the 68000/68010 specifically, rather than just the family. The Compu/Think Eagle-32 firmware I’m looking at freely mixes 0xff into the high byte of addresses, so I need to clone all the address spaces and it’s annoying.

eschaton,
@eschaton@mastodon.social avatar

Also, Ghidra doesn't always seem to recognize certain function prologue/epilogue as saving and restoring scratch registers, instead assuming they’re inputs and outputs, so decompilation winds up with extraout_D0 and extraout_A0 when it shouldn’t.

What’s the easiest relatively standards complaint (C89 at least) C compiler to port to another platform (as both host and target), and not necessarily a POSIX-y one? I’m thinking maybe tcc or ACK but I honestly don’t know what the cool kids are doing these days.

eschaton,
@eschaton@mastodon.social avatar

@john @lorddimwit I think there’s an additional consideration: Are the host and target platform 32-bit, or 64-bit? I know pcc used to be what got ported, and ACK is designed to be portable, but even in “portable” code from that era there’s an enormous amount of assumption that “sizeof(long) == sizeof(void *) == 4” and usually also that “sizeof(int) == sizeof(long)” (which played hell with porting to Mac compilers).

A few annoying problems with the could be solved if there were a new URI scheme with the right semantics. I notice that Bluesky has already provisionally-registered the "at:" URI scheme for similar purposes.

So, I sketched out a design for what a "fedi:" URI scheme might look like and how it’d work: https://github.com/timbray/fedi-uri

@timbray A bit over a year ago I proposed using the already-existing acct: URI scheme with the WebFinger protocol to reference Mastodon accounts: https://eschatologist.net/blog/?p=309
